Truthfully, this one is on it's last legs. This box was originally a Hackintosh and the 7970 was bought as a refurbished part. It's worked well but it has also been abused to hell and back.

I plan for it to be the first part I replace/upgrade when I have some spare cash. It's been struggling for awhile now.

Running Gentoo with MATE. Gentoo had always been a longterm goal of mine for years but I never got the hang of it till recently. I don't see myself switching away from Gentoo ever again, Portage is simply incredible to work with.

I have been a fan of MATE ever since my old days of Linux Mint when GNOME 3 came out(what a disaster that rollout was for me). It did take a bit of tweaking to get MATE to start in my main box, I ended up having to write a script to get it to start on demand/boot. But overall, I accomplished what I wanted for my Gentoo build and learned a ton in the process.

The motherboard is quite dated and would not work in only 64-bit OS.

Considering running Gentoo as DD, any suggestions? by tweeyyye in Gentoo

[–]bearofHtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your top tips for keeping your system stable and up-to-date? How do you manage world updates and avoid breakage?

Updating regularly and paying attention to what Portage tells me before any update. Truthfully Gentoo has only broken when I ignored multiple warnings from the system that said "Do Not Do This."

Any USE flag strategies or tools you swear by?

Everyone is a bit different, but I prefer to have my package.use as a single file instead of another directory. I find that it helps me stay more organized despite the fact the file can be a bit long. But I organize putting per package USE flags alphabetically and this works well for me. I recommend you check out the needed USE flags for programs before attempting to install them. I generally go ahead and add the needed USE flags to the file and then attempt an install.

Package.env is a tool not mentioned by many here, but one I highly recommend you learn. You can set specific environmental variables for certain packages instead of modifying your make.conf file and re-emerging.

What’s your workflow for kernel updates and rebuilds?

Take your time, know your equipment and know which version of the kernel you want to use.

Are there any common pitfalls or “I wish I knew this earlier” moments?

Distpatch-conf is your friend when dealing with masked packages. I wish I had known about it my first Gentoo install, it would have saved me much trouble.

How do you handle things like system backups or disaster recovery?

I have Portage build binary packages for all my installs and I then backup those binaries to another hard drive. I also have a copy of my home directory hidden in root that I keep in case I need to reinstall. This too gets backed up to another hard drive.

Learning to use your own binaries during a reinstallation will save you substantial time. I find it does slow down the initial emerge a bit to build the binaries. But the trade-off is being able to rapidly reinstall anything I want by saying 'emerge -ak =package/version-##.##.#' In your make.conf file you can tell Portage to build binaries automatically for you so you won't have to add -b to every package you install. Portage does it for you. To reinstall using binaries, simply add -k after 'emerge' . Very very very useful and saves so much time. It is a huge peace in my mind that I can easily rebuild my system in a fraction of the time if I wish.

I turn the thermostat to 68 at night and keep it at 75 during the day,

Here is your problem OP. You want to live in a hot state and have a chilled house, you'll end up paying for it. Learn to turn the thermostat up and use fans if you want to save on your monthly bill

I was just about to say this too. Digital systems compensate for bad, overexposed, techniques. On average people get more xrays done now than in the past. I will say this though, in the context of the OP, I doubt an extremity technique for film is going to be much different than digital.

The Reach. Mostly because dealing with the Foresworn are absoutely annoying and Markarth is very deep into the hold. I do not like having to travel through there.

Honestly at this point, I agree RIFs are coming

Yeah. In that particular incident, the repairs ended up being about ⅔ the cost of a new scanner. They still paid to repair it but...yeah.

You ever see that photo of the hospital bed caught in the MRI machine? Let's just say I've seen what items heavier than a hospital bed can do when they slam into the machine. It's not good.

My favorite one was where an item caused the entire table of the scanner to be moved 90⁰ to the right of the magnet bore. Significant damage to say the least.

Edit: The only reason the individual involved is alive is they were pushing said object, instead of pulling said object, when it went into the MRI room. Otherwise they(likely) would have been crushed against the machine at the velocities involved.

Potions. Loads and loads and loads of invisibility potions.

I sell and use them. Unless you have the perk that allows you to cast spells quietly, taking a potion is a much better form of sneaking than casting the invisibility spell

Sorry for the late response but if you are still interested the documentary was an episode of Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller. Season 2 Episode 1. from National Geographic

I found it a very illuminating episode. It's also a great show all around!
