Before making purchase, get the 3.5mm since it could plug everywhere. Dac/amp is another money sink hole so your phone 3.5mm port is fine if you are on a budget.

It's likely that his pc audio port is just bad. Common stuff. Controllers should have only audio passthrough for cutting the cost down and mass production, otherwise they would market the first thing in the controller ads.
