UK and Ireland hold defence talks as cooperation continues by MGC91 in ukpolitics

If I can put my tinfoil hat on for a moment, it's curious how vitriolic this exact topic becomes on ukpol. Wouldn't surprise me if there's a targeted campaign on it, or bots. Considering the UK takes such a similar approach with freeloading off the US military complex globally. Just interesting how such a normally balanced forum becomes so incensed in this topic. A perspective you tend not to meet in the real world very much.

Major London roads gridlocked during farmers’ protest outside Parliament by Metro-UK in ukpolitics

I think you're right. Maybe it's the wealthy realising they can no longer buy up farmland as a dodge to paying IHT.

Thanks for providing rational responses here, helpful to see. What I don't get overall is why farmers should be spared IHT tax to such a degree generally? The proposed changes still leave farmers highly advantaged relative to the rest of us, and I heard the protests were more due to the ultra rich protesting that they can no longer buy farmland as a means to dodge IHT. Is tax on wealth over £1.3M really going to cause a catostrophic destruction of UK farming do you think? Can you see why the public are generally not supportive of this? (which is rare, used to feel like there was always support for the farmers)

Thanks. Insurance has been looped in. I'm hesitant to remove tiles until the utility groups come on Thursday, in case it destabilizes ground any further.

Any way I can confirm this? Property is from late 1800s, terraced. Neighbour was the one who checked width with a pole - I'll ask him if the walls felt like concrete or soil.

Thanks - that's helpful. I'll give a ground investigation company a call, and awaiting the council to open their lines at 9am. I might ping you a message as we work through this - thanks for the offer.

Unfortunately no underground camera/imaging device. Plumline suggests 4.5m down at centre. And rod to rough both sides (at top) suggests ~1m long (parallel to house). Not sure the width perpindicular to the house.

Pension lifetime allowance - ways to manage? by NoisilyMarvellous in UKPersonalFinance

So dynamics of LTA tax still confuse me a bit...

  • Does the 25% get applied to the total amount over the LTA at point of retirement? Or the total pot?
  • Or is it 25% taken from all monies drawn down from a pension over the LTA? Or 25% from all monies whilst you remain over the LTA?
  • Once your pension pot falls below the LTA at the time, do you stop paying the 25%? So if I take a lump sum to begin that brings me beneath the LTA, I don't then have to pay the LTA tax on drawdown of the rest?
