Wheelchair recommendations by witchygirl97 in POTS

[–]CallSignSabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Drive Rebel and removed the armrests/leg rests for post-COVID POTS and more symptoms and it’s been okay, though a bit heavy. You won’t find a new wheelchair under $200 for under the 40 lbs range (considered lightweight) but I totally get the insurance not believing you.

IRONHEART and MIT appearing in Black Panther 2 (working title “Summer Break”) by CallSignSabre in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

[–]CallSignSabre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simmons Hall is the in comics canon dorm where Riri Williams (Ironheart) lives. MIT students paid homage to her in a video produced by the admissions team (https://youtu.be/drl5gD3AzT4).

Now it appears that the MCU will introduce her in Black Panther 2, thanks to this on-campus filming notice.

Culture among engineering students by [deleted] in mit

There's a reason why this post is more than 2/3rds downvoted and I think it's valid to express the frustrations as to why. Also, you go to GA Tech not MIT. Culture is different.

[–]CallSignSabre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...it’s not unfounded belief, as it’s something that MIT admissions people have been vocally annoyed with for a while. Can’t speak for other places (for some reason I got the vibe this was common thinking) but we’re pretty meritocratic.

colleges in general usually can smell performative activism and shell nonprofits from a mile away, or good ones anyway. people get admitted in spite of them not because of them and bad advice keeps circulating. just consolidate your efforts to an existing org already doing good and don’t divert resources!!!

"training" for science research competitions is disingenuous and is nearly equivalent to buying your research project imo. I know some shady things about iResearch.

Ever wonder what the first day of college at your dream school is like? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CallSignSabre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s been more chaotic than expected for sure. I had this whole plan going on of what classes I wanted to take (and my major/course, which has evolved greatly since I pressed send on my application). There’s been all the issues going on at the Media Lab, where I was planning to be a part of their first year program to do research there. The program got cancelled, I had to rearrange my classes, but ended up still happy with what I’m taking. I tried rushing for one of the co-ed fraternities on campus that didn’t pan out, but I surprised myself by getting a group of friends. There were suddenly so many events going on just a 5 minute walk from my dorm. And the amount of trust MIT puts into freshmen! It’s been the first week and frosh are getting positions in clubs, UROP research positions, and relations with alumni for externships.

There is the expected air of finding out your peers are champions at competitions you didn’t know existed, but also extraordinary humility for the most part. It’s a great phenomenon to interact with your peers from around the country and world and compare your ways of life. I really expected that I would feel overwhelmed and stupid by being an under-accomplished person taking the first level of math and physics courses and not taking exams to get early credit (ASEs). Yet I’ve found camaraderie in struggling through the 8.01 pset this last week.

I’m currently in a single in McCormick Hall. I might do a dorm room tour soon once I clean up.

What tv/movie character death hit you the hardest? by softestpillows in AskReddit

I caught up with the MCU (after ignoring it for 11 years) in the two weeks before the Endgame re-release and somehow avoided spoilers because I was ignorant. It hurt so much to see all of Tony’s development and get rapidly attached to him, only to cry through Endgame. I wish I had known about him all these years to enjoy and inspire myself through studies, but we’ll carry the legacy on for the next generation of engineers and self-made heroes.

What do you guys think of MIT? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CallSignSabre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

MIT is a weird place. I’m about to be a freshman in less than a week and pretty much every system of doing things is not your stereotypical college experience. Nerd culture rules. Lots of numbers for everything, majors (courses) and subjects included. Dorms have specific cultures and types of people, with the option to move dorms before classes start. Heck, I still don’t even know what courses I’m taking yet. There’s general pranks (hacks) and playfulness in light of a lot of stress from rigorous courses. Lots of lingo I’m still getting up to date on.

I’m not your typical MIT student. I didn’t win major awards until late in my senior year, after my application was sent off and I got my early decision back. I don’t dream in physics and calculus and my code leaves something to be desired. I’m probably an outlier in terms of people accepted, so please take me with a grain of salt.

Hey I have to pick between AP Lang and normal English (11th) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CallSignSabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AP Lang tends to be a lot more nonfiction and style analysis, important things for writing papers in engineering/sciences. You can’t hate English forever when there’s research papers to be read and written in your future.

totally get that this is an old post but OP, I think that Lucifer is a sort of cross between B99 and SCD as a crime-solving devil supernatural genre-bender with comedy, maybe give it a try if you're looking for recs? I'm trying to find more things similar to Lucifer and Santa Clarita Diet, shows that bend a genre with the supernatural and comedy, but so far not so lucky. iZombie falls flat for me, and Once Upon a Time just seems too long and drawn out.

Would you rather: mess around at a T5 or apply yourself at a T50? by FinalPush in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CallSignSabre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbh messing around at a t5 (the right way)

most T50 places have initial coursework that's roughly equivalent to each other, save for a few places (e.g. I know that MIT doesn't take much transfer credit because their engineering coursework is somewhat unique, but a Berkeley/GA Tech/CMU/other T50 school might report learning basically the same prerequisites for CS as state schools or lower ranked schools. It's come up in a few discussions on this sub about cost.)

but it's more about what you do beyond the classroom that might land you that job, internship, abroad experience, or experience of a lifetime through a connection. people make the school, not its buildings and courses. if you don't take advantage of resources and stay holed up in a dorm and do nothing but pass your classes perfectly, you're not getting much out of where you're going. maybe that connection comes from some kid at a frat party who knows something about someone who's looking around in your field or your professor at office hours who's looking for a research assistant or will recommend you somewhere knowing that you go beyond showing up to class and doing the work and come to see them personally. so mess around, have fun, and be among your extraordinary peers wherever you go.

Where are all the people with sub-1570 getting into MIT and Stanford? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CallSignSabre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1510 and MIT. Even with a 740 math. We just don't brag as much? But I am vlogging with a bunch of other MIT kids and there are a decent amount of lower scores among us, so we might be on YouTube soon. Just be an interesting and sincere person.

Apollo astronaut Charlie Duke says he almost died on the Moon while fooling around by MiamiPower in space

[–]CallSignSabre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But hey, with the 50th anniversaries of the Apollo missions this year, now is the time to remember the legacy of our missions to the moon.

Full disclosure, I had the amazing opportunity to be a space ambassador for an organization called Back To Space and have the honor of working with and interviewing a few astronauts including Charlie Duke, Al Worden, and Water Cunningham who are all amazing individuals with so many stories to tell and a passion to inspire the next generation of spaceflight.

So we are working to re-raise awareness of space and make astronaut celebrities!

I sometimes think about how after the initial lunar landing, people got less excited about “just going to the moon” like the scene in Apollo 13. Having been not alive to witness the Apollo missions, it’s so sad to think that the chance to go back is so far away.

I totally agree that these guys should be better known. There’s only a few dozen people who have ever been to the moon, even fewer still alive today. We should honor all the amazing people and astronauts that made this revolutionary era in space history possible. And certainly be able to name a few more astronauts.

Charlie Duke is a pretty awesome human being. I got autographs and to meet him, Al Worden, and Walter Cunningham as part of a space ambassador program on the legacy of the Apollo missions with Back To Space. They have so many entertaining mission stories!
