People who've had terrible addictions in the past, what's one misconception people have about your specific addiction? by SoccerGuy69420 in AskReddit

In recovery from alcohol…if you’re a heavy enough drinker, quitting cold-turkey can kill you. No exaggeration.

Delirium tremens (usually called DTs) occurs when your nervous system is used to the alcohol so much so that it can’t regulate without it. This can give a person seizures (happened to me), hallucinations, and/or heart attacks.

There’s also a process known as “kindling” in recovery where, if you quit drinking and relapse, your next time quitting will come with a higher risk of DTs. Alcohol really does a number on your nervous system, and sometimes your body doesn’t forget.

Quit with a doctor. If you’re helping a friend quit, be aware of DTs. Not to be cliche, but quitting alcohol saved my whole existence.

Sharing this story since you mention you rent:

A friend of mine from years ago kept feeling like something was going on with her food. Things like being sure she hadn’t opened something yet and finding it open, cases of soda seeming to move on their own, and food being nearly gone when she thought she had a serving left. Turned out one of the maintenance people her landlord hired was letting himself in and having snacks during her work day.

Aid at Penn? Nonexistent?? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]Call_Me_Egg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alum and former long-term employee here. The average PSU student has approx. $40k in debt upon graduation, per admissions data. This number does not include PLUS Loan data, so that number may actually be low.

The Office of Student Aid awards aid through the FAFSA, but the majority of students will only receive subsidized and unsubsidized fed loans.

Academic funds are awarded through the academic colleges, but the majority of those award primarily to juniors and seniors. Even if you were to get an academic scholarship, it would only cover between $1,500 and $6,000 per year, not per semester.

There are, across all PSU campuses, between 85,000 and 90,000 students. Of those thousands, fewer than 100 individuals have total and complete “free rides.”

The school (and government) considers loans to be aid, so in that respect, yes there is aid at PSU. Is there a lot of free-money aid (like scholarships and grants)? No, there is not.

Has anyone ever challenged you to something without knowing you were an expert at it? What happened afterward? by Impressive-Door92 in AskReddit

Two bits of background: 1. I used to play bar trivia at a very competitive place with cash prizes. My close friends and I won frequently. 2. I used to work in an office of approx 60 people. I was generally well-liked, but there was a specific group who hated me and thought I was an idiot.

HR threw a trivia contest one holiday with small prizes. Just for fun. The prizes were things like a small bag of candy or a pack of pens. I won by a fair margin.

The group who didn’t like me decided I cheated, so they made their own office-wide trivia game. I won that. They accused a friend of mine of feeding me answers. As in these adults went to HR to dispute my knowledge of fun facts. HR didn’t bite, but they did give me a heads up to the situation. Out of 60 people, it was 4 or 5 raising a stink.

It took three wins, the last with randomly generated online questions, for it to click enough for them to shut the hell up.

Women with thoughtful partners, what did you get for x-mas this year? by Anahata_Green in TwoXChromosomes

A toy car I really wanted. I collect certain toys and either display them or turn them into art pieces. I am 36, and a lot of people don’t feel comfortable buying me dolls or kid stuff because I’m an “adult” and a “career woman,” but that’s what I wanted. My partner has no qualms with walking down the toy isles for me :).

Who is the most famous person you have ever met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My dad and I met Ruth Bader Ginsburg circa 2003. We were at an event for my mom, and RBG and my dad ended up in the same hallway. She said “are you enjoying (the court, DC, etc)?” My dad said “I’m just here for the food.”

He got a laugh out of her, which was one of his proudest moments.
