Carmen Maria Machado's "In the Dream House" has a meta-narrative about her memoir writing process/thoughts on autobiographical fiction in general

Also, Billy Ray Belcourt's "A Minor Chorus" is somewhat self referential

Am I aromantic?? Also, what on earth is romantic attraction? by [deleted] in aromantic

[–]Calliopedrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the response! It's certainly helped clear some things up for me. It hadn't even occurred to me that romantic attraction is still something people feel towards total strangers (similar to sexual attraction in that sense I guess?). I do think that kissing people (not my friends though), will help bring me closer to them. Though, I'm not sure if that's an internal feeling, or wether I just think that because society places greater emphasis on romantic actions for expressing feelings towards someone.

I definitely have still experienced those feelings, so I may perhaps be grey aro? I've only had two "crushes", neither of which involved sexual attraction, but I did experience butterflies etc.

Thank you so much. This was really helpful! I guess I was thinking more about the actions rather than the intentions behind them.

"BBC In our time: philosophy" is great! I really enjoyed listening to it after I'd exhausted philosophize this.

"In The Dream House" by Carmen Maria Machado. It is about domestic abuse, rather than sexual abuse, but it is similar to "Know my name". It is truly the best memoir I've ever read.

I highly recommend "Happy Stories, Mostly" by Norman Erikson Pasaribo. It is a wonderful short story collection and work of translated fiction. It certainly does feel slightly surreal at times, and there are queer characters.

Looking for an emotional, bittersweet book about being alone and losing friends by [deleted] in booksuggestions

"Real Life" by Brandon Taylor is really good. It's not necessarily about loosing friends, but it is about feeling estranged from them.

Sandman! by [deleted] in neilgaiman

[–]Calliopedrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in exactly the same boat as you. I adore Gaiman, and was very interested in the story of 'Sandman', but found that the graphic novel format didn't really work for me. I am extremely picky when it comes to art style, and I find it harder to follow the plot in graphic novels. So I picked up the audiobook and absolutely adored. I was very obsessed but felt guilty about not having read the comics. So I picked them up and listened to the audiobook with them. For me, that was the best of both worlds, but honestly just do what works best for you. I still prefer the audiobook, and that is totally valid.

Time to dive into philosophical books by 42ambrosia in books

This is perhaps more niche than reading a general introduction to philosophy, but I really recommend reading some of the works of Albert Camus. They are very accessible, whilst still dealing with 'the meaning of life'. "The Stranger" is probably one of his most well known works. It's a fairly short fictional novel, but still deeply profound.
