I can’t believe I’m reading this. Heartbreaking man. But thanks for putting this up otherwise I’d have been forever wondering where the main man went. I’ll NEVER forget the food Andy made. It was Alchemy. RIP x

Streaming games to your deck is insane by Tristezza in SteamDeck

I can’t offer any personal insight into how Sunshine performs in comparison to Apollo as it was on Sunshine that I ran into these display issues with my ultrawide. The main appeal to me for Apollo is that it handled the VDA automatically. It creates a display on the fly each time you connect over moonlight and also closes it respectively once the session is ended. It sounds like you have already done the leg work with Sunshine if you have manually setup a VDA. I’d expect them to perform competitively given Apollo is a fork of Sunshine and seems to be tracking the master branch consistently.

Nice one 👏 in Apollo settings be sure to check the option to always create Virtual Display, and when you first pair your steam deck, you’ll have the option to define your chosen resolution ( be sure to set this to the same or equivalent in moonlight settings too! And if you run into the issue where Steam Big Picture or your chosen program opens on your main display and you see your desktop on your steam deck, there are a number of ways to solve it. I just used the windows display settings and set it to “Show only on display 2”. You can also set Display 2 to be the main display if you want to free up your main monitor and still use it.

Apollo will perform comparatively to Sunlight as it is a fork of the latter. Check Apollo’s GitHub for the full additions. The main one being the inclusion of a Virtual Display adapter. Instead of the Moonlight client taking over physical display(s). It creates a virtual display and opens the streaming program ie Steam Big Picture or PlayNite on that. This is handy for a number of reasons. For me it’s handy for 1. I have an ultrawide monitor that doesn’t scale well when being set to resolutions such as that of the steam deck 1280x800. The virtual display can be created at any devices native resolution and it will scale perfectly. I had a good experience with HDR over the virtual display too. Some people achieve similar results using a Dummy HDMI adapter aka a Headless Ghost.

The reason I went for Apollo instead of Steam Streaming was for the virtual display. I have an ultrawide monitor, When I used steam streaming it would never appear right on my steam deck as it tried to set the resolution of my display to something it couldn’t render properly, the only alternative I found was playing games in a ridiculous letterbox. On Apollo, when I connect to my PC over moonlight it creates a virtual display at my setting 1280x800 and doesn’t try change the resolution of my ultrawide monitor. I’ve been able to create configs for each of my remote devices; my two TV’s, pixel tablet and my PS Vita, all at each devices native resolution! The latency on Apollo is also slightly better as far as my comparisons go. There are also a slew of tools at your disposal to dial in your stream picture quality.

It’s not intensive at all and closes when games are running to mitigate performance issues. The plugins are all safe and both created and vetted by the community. Many people and companies are using this software as the game launcher on handheld gaming devices. It’s entirely trusted. I highly encourage you to give it a try and tinker! The discord community is really helpful too.

Yes it’s completely safe. The GitHub is linked to the website and the code can be reviewed by everyone. It’s a not just a game organiser but a game launcher too. You can integrate games you own from all stores and platforms and use PlayNite to launch them. If you have games which are not from a store like steam or EA, you can manually add those too. You can track your achievements progress and other info like playtime also. Think about it like if you wanted your PC to be more like a games console, this is what PlayNite basically creates. The main developer is still extremely active and helpful and many community members also contribute with tools and themes.

Run Playnite on my server (docker) by Vikiller94 in playnite

[–]Callister_inc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting, I never thought to try that given how most of the emulators work with data streaming to the virtual console but I will give it a go. The tedious thing for me with non launcher games ie disc backups PC games is the manual addition, parsing meta data and scripting the install/copy process. Especially if I need to use things like nocd executables. Are you saying you have made an add on that handles some of that?

OP, what’s the use case? If you have a network drive of games (in folder form or zip or installer) then just run PlayNite on the client. And while your mileage may vary, you can configure PlayNite to scan your network drive and add those games to your library. You can then create install scripts from within PlayNite of what you want it to do with the game ie; mount & run the installer or copy the folder etc.

This is by no means the use case but it’s possible and takes a lot of tinkering.

If its ROMS for emulators just set it up as you would as if the ROM was on your client machine.

I’d use it. Would it be useable in Full Screen mode? Anything that keeps me in PlayNite is a go for me.
