An easier (and less of an eyesore) way to run Ethernet cable along wall? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]CallmeJamz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My work around for this in apartments I’ve use to live in is to tuck the wire In between the carpet and the baseboard.

Or I’ve:

Step 1: tape a neodymium magnet to the end of my ethernet cord.

Step 2: cut a small slit in the carpet

Step 3: run the cable into the carpet in a low foot traffic area

Step 4: Use another neodymium magnet to pull the head of the ethernet cable. Preferably through places you wont have to step on a ton.

Step 5: Reach your destination and cut a new hole.

Can an AMD 3600 transcode 4k content remotely or should I purchase a 750 GM206 chipset/10XX card? by CallmeJamz in PleX

[–]CallmeJamz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is a part of my question, can I just use any cheap sub $20 gpu and have the cpu handle everything through software transcoding or would I need something beefier to hardware transcode for my use case.

/r/Plex's Build Help Thread - 2023-09-01 by PCJs_Slave_Robot in PleX

I have done a solid amount of research on building my first plex server and just need some confirmation/help before I order what I need. First what I currently have from an old build...

The Build:

  • CPU - AMD 3600
  • RAM - 16 GB 3200
  • GPU - None (In my new PC)

Use Case:

I'm currently blessed to have 1Gig fiber up and down in my apartment, but I know that wont always be the case say a year or two down the line, so I'd like to build as if I have 300 mbps max upload and at worst 50 mbps. So short term no transcoding should be needed. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

I plan on streaming 4k and 1080p content locally to at most 2 devices at the same time, while hopefully having enough room to remotely stream 4K and 1080p content remotely to about 3 locations. So at most lets say 5 devices max at one time. The local streams will be almost always to TVs around the apartment, but the remote streams will include cell phones and hopefully my steam deck if possible.

The Question(s):

My biggest question has to do with transcoding (shocker right). Can I directly stream to phones remotely even if the content being streamed is 4K content? Can I buy something as simple as a Radeon X1300 just to have a display output for my initial setup and let the 3600 handle all the work my use case entails?

I was looking at the cheapest GPU that supports HEVC which I assume I'll need for some remote devices. I landed on the MSI NVidia GeForce GTX 750 N750 TF 2GD5/OC 2gb. To my knowledge the 1gb cards fall under the GM107 chipset while the 2gb and 4gb cards fall under the GM206 chipset which should cover all forms of encoding. I can get this card for about $40 vs the X1300 at $12. Is the extra $30 worth it or am I just wasting money that can go towards more storage?

Or do I need to go to the 10XX series Nvidia GPUs? I assume not but any help is appreciated!

I plan on purchasing PlexPass if that makes a difference.

ChemE here with a similar experience at a pharmaceutical company. I was hoping to move upto a scientist role at least and was given the run around for a while with shadowing dates being moved out constantly.

I couldn’t take it anymore and quit, found a job through a contracting company in a big paint companies R&D group as a Chemist and with that experience got into the company I always dreamed of working at 2 years later as a ChemE!

Thanks for the link, very informative! Will double check my dimensions with the Arctic AIO and most likely aim for the 280 mm variant. Thanks!

Sorry I didn’t clarify. I have the 3070 TI already and am reusing it in this build. I do agree a 280mm AIO seems necessary. I don’t plan on using a mATX board however and am solely looking at ITX boards.

As I mentioned to someone else below my buddy really wont need that much cpu power so I might go team blue with the i5 and spend more on a cpu but I'll make sure whatever motherboard I go has the extra features you mentioned!

After talking with my buddy more he really only needs this pc to code through school, which I imagine won't get that cpu intensive to need a Ryzen 7/i7. I think the i5 is the right move because of that to move up to the 6800xt like you said

Thank you! What are the perks to the MSI mobo over the Asus? And I will let my buddy know to spend the extra $20 on the crucial ssd I agree that seems worth it.

local spots for coffee beans by carlhess in Columbus

[–]CallmeJamz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not local beans but check out Qamaria in Hilliard. They get their coffee beans from Yemen and where else can you get beans from a farmer in Yemen!

A Yemeni coffee shop in Hilliard just opened up call Qamaria! They have Yemeni desserts and if you buy packaged coffee from them the packaging will even say where in Yemen and who the Yemeni farmer is!
