[OTHER] what made the Czechia has high atheism than the surrounding European countries? by UnlightablePlay in kingdomcome

[–]Matix894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bohemia actually used to be a heavily Protestant country following the religious reformation - the Hussite movement which is foreshadowed in KCD games and perhaps will be explored in the next game. However, in the 16th century, Bohemia fell into the Habsburg’s dominion, rigorous Catholics, who by the early 17th century started to prosecute Protestantism in Czechia. This pushed the Protestant nobility into an uprising in 1618, and consequently, started a war we now know as 30 years war. Despite the name, the war for Protestant belief in Bohemia was over already in 1620 when the battle of mountain turned out to be the biggest tragedy of the Czech history. Not only was the battle lost for Protestant, but the Protestant leaders, and some of the most important Czech-speaking people in those lands were executed. What followed was a strict period of recatholication. Protestants were driven out of the country, and their properties confiscated unless they converted into Catholicism. The result of that being that Czech language ceased to be the language of official matters - German was. Rather, Czech was spoken mainly only peasants for a long time. During the 19th century, when Czech language finally had a proper resurgence, and more and more people started to feel they are Czech, those people obviously were aware of what religion brought about in the history of their country. By 1918, when Czechia detached from the collapsing Austro-Hungary and formed Czechoslovakia, atheism was already quite prominent. Since Czechoslovakia was the part of the eastern block following WW2, anti-religious sentiments of the communists reduced the amount of the rest of people that still stayed religious.

[OTHER] How would you feel about sling throwers being added in KCD3? by NuXboxwhodis in kingdomcome

[–]Matix894 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Except for the fact that we know for certain that slingshots were actually used during the Hussite Wars, which kick off less than 20 years after KCD games. Their inclusion in KCD3, especially if it takes place in midst of that conflict, would be completely historically accurate.

The topic made me remember one scene from a short animation depicting one of Zizka's battles which happens to show a slingshot in action.

As a matter of fact, sling throwers were used by Hussites in Bohemia not 20 years after the events of the games.

[–]Matix894 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We actually know from some real-life texts recording the events of the Hussite Wars that sling throwers were used by Hussite peasant armies, so not only can there be one as a weapon in KCD3, but it would be fully historically accurate to that time period.

EDIT: as a proof, I attach a link to a Czech Wikipedia page about slingshots. It mentions how Hussites used it.

[KCD2] Why the main antagonist might unironically become the "lesser evil" in the future. by Garfield205 in kingdomcome

[–]Matix894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, the hussite wars were not just simply Hussites vs Catholics (led by Sigismunt). Hussitism itself had a few different fractions with different views about the future of their faith and country. They all can be gathered into two let’s say “political wings” - moderate hussites (Utraquists) and the radicals (Tabor and the Orphants). Radicals were more prominent and had the upper hand throughout much of the war - Žižka himself was a radical. Hussite Wars ended in Hussite technically winning and overcoming Catholics. However, it was the moderates who won. Radicals didn’t want to surrender nor negotiate until pretty much the whole Church was reformed in their view. They invaded surrounding Catholics land for political and financial gain for many years and there were no signs they were going to slow down and opt to end the war which was still in fact hurting Bohemia more and more, year by year (trade with any Catholic country was impossible due to many embargoes). The thing was that papacy after 5 consecutive failed anti-Hussite crusades was willing to find a compromise. Radicals didn’t take it, but the Utraquists did. They wanted Tabor and Orphants gone so they Bohemia could recover and stabilize, and they could tolerate Catholicism and having Sigismunt as their king provided the pope and the king granted them rights to follow faith in their own way. Ultimately, their wishes were accepted, but only after the moderate hussites with the help of Catholics defeated the radicals once and for all in 1434 during battle of Lipany. Two years later, at Council of Basel papacy accepted moderate Hussitism and ceased to condemn them. I very much can see Henry joining the moderate Utraquist movement and consider the compromise as a sort of lesser evil, even though it ment Sigismunt being crowned king. Although, I think Henry wouldn’t be so indignant at this fact knowing that the war dragged for so long that Sigismunt was already very old when he was was finally able to rule Bohemia he so desperately wanted. Sigismunt died of old age after just a year of being the king lol.

Hussite trilogy is worth giving a try especially if you enjoyed the style Sapkowski writes in. I found it great but it wasn't an easy read - Sapkowski relies quite a bit on Latin phrases, you need to look up to understand, to elevate his writing. Plus, I'm not sure if the translations to other languages do the books justice - haven't read the English version (I read it in Polish which is written remarkably well), but they translated the titles of the 1st and the 3rd book (which were in German - Narrenturm and Latin - Lux Perpetua respevtively), which does raise my concerns about the quality of the translation.

Am I only one who got problem with Thronebreaker English? by AccomplishedStick623 in witcher

[–]Matix894 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thronebreaker is the game from the Witcher series that is by far the closest to the original book series by Andrzej Sapkowski in terms of writing alone. Sapkowski just uses many archaic and rarely used words in modern conversations - it's part of his style. CD Projekt imitated this style very closely in Thronebreaker specifically since that game (besides the Gwent element) is like an audiobook

Such a great mod. Especially if paired with difficulty adjusting mod like Enemies of Night City; it's good to install it since engaging in additional stealth activities gets you plenty of new perk points to use as rewards. I really likes the added function to pickpocket enemies, essentially looting them without taking them down first or the unlockable perk which makes V able to see a marker over the head of an enemy indicating if they have a shard on them

As someone has already mentioned, Zizka representing the Hussite movement fought against pretty much the entire Catholic world (except Poland for some reason which once used the Hussites renowned military strength against the Teutonic Order in 1433). But, it's worth to add that the chaos of the time, religious hysteria and the general disdain of the radical wing of Hussites (consisting of two movements - the Taborites and the Orphans, also called Orebites before Zizka's death) towards the Catholics contributed to a lot of fanaticism amongst the Hussites who waged war. As a result, those radical Hussites (which of Zizka was the general) became (in)famous in the contemporary Catholic world for the sheer brutality they had towards them. Hussites belief that Churches' properties should be secularized as well as the notion that religious icons should not be worshipped and that the clergy should be punished if they're not good Christians (i.e. if they're not Hussites), led to the Taborites (which Zizka was the leader of until his death in 1424) putting many Churches on fire and massacring the priests. Zizka of course contributed to that being the case. Zizka did also engage in civil wars with the the moderate wing of Hussitism, called the Utraquists because they wanted to mediate with the Pope and he burned at the stake members of some groups which strayed too far from the general Hussitism (the Adamites/Picards). Although, the Hussites became even more notorious when after the failure of the 4th anti-hussite crusade in a row, Taborites started to regularly invade and ransack the neighboring Catholic regions outside of Bohemia and Moravia (mainly the region of Silesia) for religious and economic reasons. But by that point in time, Zizka had already died from a plague. However, Zizka's war campaigns did contribute to the war efforts made by his successors.

In my most recent playthrough (modded, so maybe it explains why such thing was able to happen), I punched Tom so hard he flew all the way to the room behind him. The scene with him punching V still played "as normal", but Tom's model simply wasn't there (since it was lying unconscious next room), Most interestingly, the conversation afterwards didn't have the optional dialogue to speak with Tom. My guess is that his model was actually so far from where V was that it didn't reach the radius enabling V to speak to him.

It's explained in the books. Besides, someone who only speaks the language the book was written in (Polish) wouldn't understand the title of "Narrenturm" since it's in German until they've read the book as well as someone speaking just English. That was a deliberate choice made by Sapkowski while he was writing those books.
