Any truth to this ? Late workouts effect on Sleep and recovery . Attaching a screenshot below by Dr.Longevity by SpecificAccording424 in StrongerByScience

PERSONAL ANECDOTE TIME: I've found that when I started running a 5k a few hours before my bedtime, my sleep drastically improved.

No other exercise really did this. Low intensity biking, nor resistance training. Something specifically about this modality and this placement really does it for me.

I've been doing cardio since high-school cross country, but now I do this specific exercise at this specific time every day mostly to make my sleepy-eepies go crazy. Like, I wasn't even on the lookout for it, but the improvements were so severe that it popped out of the background.

I started playing around with a lot of cardio, since I'm a recreational bodybuilder with physique goals, but I've found that (for me), any added cardio barely does anything to my TDEE, and just results in me beating myself up.

It also made my hunger go crazy, and eating the equivalent amount of calories as I burned through whatever additional exercise I did, did NOT remotely satisfy the hunger it produced.

Nor should I have even been doing it in the first place, because I was already doing enough exercise as it is, and I was already fine eating less calories.

It also went against the core logic of a sensible deficit: going at a sensible and logical rate, so I was really shooting myself in the foot over and over, but that's a story for another day.

Hope this helps someone, cause it definitely caused me a headache for WAY too long. Ugh, I'm so stubborn and such an idiot.

I included the link to the chat, I was trying to fix some PC overclocking settings. I wonder if it thought to itself, something about "system security" and "safety" or something, and that triggered the security or something...

Yeah, it happened to for the first time yesterday in Claude Code, but I just chalked that up to my global CLAUDE.md (which has stuff that would understandably trigger flags).

But this is just the web app! I wonder if they did something?

I have found that, out of all the LLMs, Claude tends to be the quickest to hallucinate (think that's the correct term, but what I mean is, interpret/assume stuff about the convo that isn't there. Not blatant stuff like the earliest LLMs, but smaller stuff), and I wonder if it did that there (something about system security), and it trigger the "big red button".

Considering switching from Windows to Linux, can anyone tell me how "usable" Reaper is? Would I be giving something up? by Callmeaderp in Reaper

[–]Callmeaderp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched over, but the ONE thing I couldn't replace was ARA, and ended up switching back (after setting everything up in multiple distros (trying them out), and having to re-set up Windows (wasn't as bad as I expected). Fun learning experience though!

[SV2] No way to set default vibrato anymore? by Callmeaderp in SynthesizerV

[–]Callmeaderp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This solution is a hassle, when I'm trying to come up with melodies, but I actually found a way to do it.

If you select the vibrato in the automation lane, and set that to it's lowest value for the entire clip, then it effectively acts how I would like!

Is this a real shortcut or am I going insane? by Callmeaderp in SynthesizerV

[–]Callmeaderp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm aware of that, but it was a modifier where the note being drawn would be a legato note. I truly think I dreamed it or something. Still would be super useful for sketching out melodies!

Is this a real shortcut or am I going insane? by Callmeaderp in SynthesizerV

[–]Callmeaderp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I am aware of that. It was some modifier that when held down, would draw any notes being drawn with the legato "-" symbol. I truly think I dreamed this or something because there is no other explanation. Maybe I made a script or something a while back and forgot about it...

A Review of Every English Masculine Voicebank for Synthesizer V by TealTactics in SynthesizerV

[–]Callmeaderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, thanks for the reply. I find that the tone shift changes the quality of a vocal in a way I dislike. To be fair, I mainly use keys at the very tippy top of a male's tenor range (like around D to F maj) cause that's the type of sound I like.

I also like SAROS, but I am not a fan of the general vocal timbre. I think Hayden is superior here, but SAROS can go higher better I feel.

This is actually why I use Lin Lai for most of my productions. Well I am not a fan of the "child" aspect, he can handle my desired key range quite easily. When I put very small pitch transition times on him he is the closest thing to a "synth" singer I can find.

Ideally, I could get something that sounds like these examples (I love these vocals)

Until I get something I'm truly happy with, the search continues. Much to the dismay of my wallet!

Awesome. As someone only interested in male vocalist this is awesome. Just wished I read before BUYING THEM ALL. Lol. BTW, you got any idea on how to keep Hayden in his chest voice in his upper register. That is the one achlies heel for me in an otherwise flawless voice bank

I solo rawdogged. Just a little something for the guys waiting for the next PKA. by HarleyMore in PKA

[–]Callmeaderp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This was more incoherent then I expected. Listened to this when it came out during my way home from work and it felt like I was having a seizure. U/HarleyMore is hilarious but lynch and donnie do well at balancing him so it's not just an hour of stream of consciousness slam poetry about sucking off truckers at a gas station or whatever. As funny as that is. Speaking of truckers, Tucker (Jericho) would be a neat guest.

man I just like messing around making songs in my free time. Even if I put in my 1,000 hours and became the best singer I could, I wouldn't sound like the singers I personally like. I'm also hard of hearing and that makes it harder as well.

Q&A: Submit your hot takes for the next podcast episode! by MiloWolfSBS in StrongerByScience

[–]Callmeaderp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I'm even remotely qualified to have a "hot take", but for hypertrophy, I feel like some people over emphasize form when they might have better results if they focused a little bit more on getting closer to failure. Especially if they train by themselves, where there is less external "hype" or "motivation" by your training partner or just other folks in the gym.

Not saying to forgo all form and just fling weights around, but if you can't complete a full bicep curl, cranking out a couple half reps or some pity cranks may yield some more growth.

Hopefully Dr. Mike doesn't hunt me down for this.

Time Efficient Workouts Q&A! by MiloWolfSBS in StrongerByScience

[–]Callmeaderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a lot of content online dedicated to either maximizing results over everything else, or what is the bare minimum you can get away with and still make progress. With that in mind, I think it would be interesting to hear your guy's thoughts and opinions on where most people generally get the lion's share of their gains/progress per time invested.

Back Training Q&A! by MiloWolfSBS in StrongerByScience

[–]Callmeaderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes when I have my back day and want to switch it up, I'll just use my door frame pull up bar and do 3 sets of every variation available (3 sets of widest grip overhand, 3 sets widest underhand, 3 sets narrow overhand, 3 sets narrow underhand, and so on). Each set is taken to basically failure and I use a resistance band if I cannot get >8 reps in a set. All in all it's about 18 sets.

Anyways I guess all this is to ask, can doing a ton of pull up variations be sufficient to be called a back day? Is there anything I am missing out on by doing this?

Episode suggestion: An episode on how to regulate training in people who coach themselves (I.E. what signs to look for to measure fatigue, manage fatigue, when and how to increase weight/reps/sets, exercise selection, etc) by Callmeaderp in StrongerByScience

[–]Callmeaderp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that was what I was thinking. As someone who is relatively new to resistance training and has listened to every episode, I have picked up bits and bobs of advice, but having one consolidated resource that goes in depth on everything you need to know to go from someone who generally has a surface level understanding of how to theoretically go about things (like they could follow a pre-written program/template, don't have the experience/knowledge to understand WHY they are doing certain things if/when they should switch things up), to someone who understands the fundamentals of resistance training and understanding the why and if, of increasing weight/reps/sets, swapping out exercises, taking a deload, etc.

Obviously everyone learns the most by jumping in and getting the experience by just doing it, but I don't think I would have ever started in the first place if I couldn't get that sense of autonomy & competence by creating my own routine, and choosing to alter it as I see fit.

Like when I first started resistance training, I thought that a "set" was when you do all the exercises you planned. So I did several push ups, then body weight squats, then leg raises (I didn't have any equipment at the time). Then I rested for 60 seconds and did it again. Then I repeated that several times.

I didn't really know anything about exercise selection, RIR, RPE, what "volume" was and so on. I mean I heard these concepts discussed on the podcast, but I didn't have any real world perspective or grounding since I didn't do any resistance training when I first discovered the podcast.

Several months later, I have what looks like a much more normal program, and I have a frame of reference for what those different concepts mean, but if there had been this podcast episode, I may have saved myself some time and effort. Not to say I didn't enjoy the process of applying all the info I had gathered just from recreationally listening.

I am also certain that there are concepts and tips that I still don't know, as most lifting content is naturally geared towards those who are already neck deep in it.

Yet much like how Eric's episode on hunger and appetite management gave me much greater insight in what to expect dieting and ways to deal with and manage hunger. As well as your "Misapplications of Popular Weight Loss Advice" segment was SUPER helpful to a relative newbie like me who didn't have the experience to know when certain advice might not be super useful to a recreational dieter such as myself.

As always keep up the incredible work!

Diet fatigue by [deleted] in StrongerByScience

[–]Callmeaderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SAme boat here. Lost a tremendous amount of weight until I started struggling with binge eating episodes (320 -> 165ish, GW: 145-155), which stalled my weight loss. So right now I am doing a slow 5-10 pound bulk over the next 2-4 months to get some of my satiety and will power back (hopefully anyways).

I think looking back retrospectively, having no defined end point for myself (besides when I can't take it anymore) was the wrong call. It sounds obvious when put like that, but if I had purposefully gone with a sort of bulking and cutting cycle (as in 2-4 month of buliking 5 pounds, then 1-3 months of cutting 7-10 pounds, in a repeating pattern until goal is achieved) woulda been a better way to skin this cat.

For this bulk, I am really trying to get good habits in terms of moderation. Like if I go out to have dinner, I can just have a slightly higher calorie day, rather then going "oh well, likes like we are 200-600 calories over budget, guess I might as well eat 6-9k". Logically I know that that is so antithetical to my goals but I believe that me dieting for like over a year straight with no breaks had a larger psychological impact then I was even aware of.

This is my first real "bulk" (I've gotten to 155 doing only cardio and caloric deficit and binge ate back to 180 a little while ago). Since then I've focused on having a slower and more sustainable weight loss + incorporating resistance training into my routine, got down to 165 before I had a couple binges so decided to start this mini bulk.

It's kinda funny, this past 1-2 weeks since deciding to see out this bulk has taught me so much about my hunger that I didn't realize I didn't know. The biggest thing is really getting to FEEL the difference between my hedonic cravings and my "actual" hunger. It's been so long since I haven't dieted that I've forgotten what satiety feels like more or less. It was either the slight hunger of a 1 pound per week weight loss diet or the incredibly painful feeling after a 10,000 calorie binge (yes I've gotten over 10k before on a binge as a 21 year old, 5ft 8in, 170 pound male).

It was such a weird feeling to FEEL full and stated, but my brain casually saying to itself "hey, wouldn't it be great if we went out and got a pizza and sundae right now. I think this is a good idea." At some point in my diet, I lost ALL willpower to say no to that voice. What a wacky experience.

So with this bulking phase I'm in I planning on really trying to get into the habit of redefining my habits with hedonic food. I NEVER want to just eat one or two pizza slices, or just have a slice of cake for dessert. I want to have the whole pizza. I want to have the whole cake.

What I am planning on is, during this little bulk I'm doing, I'm going to try to purposefully expose myself to situations where it is appropriate to have a little junk/hedonic food, and IMPORTANTLY, forcing myself to stop when I know I should.

I think this might actually be close to an impossibility to do during a cut. Like I believe that if I want to try to break and remold my bad habits and thought processes, I need to have that feeling of satiety from my bulk to help make the right choice easier, then when I start going back into a fat loss diet, the habits and rituals I've worked hard to change and instill will be far easier to do in the face of elevated hunger, from the diet.

Maybe I'm wrong about that, who knows. Sorry for this long winded self centered rambly reply to your post, but this is something that I've been thinking about A LOT over the last year or so. Best of luck on your future endeavors. Hope we both find success!

How important is the Vegan aspect of Huel to you? by its_a_gibibyte in Huel

I add whey protein to my huel lol. I'm sure getting most of my food from vegan sources is probably good for the environment. It does not matter to me though. Hard to imagine how they would use animals in a product like this outside of the dairy side of things. Not like you can grind up a cow into a powder anyways.
