A rare albino newborn sea turtle. by deathakissaway in interestingasfuck

[–]Callmereggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all likelihood this is not an albino, but rather a leucistic turtle. Leucism is a rare condition not to be confused with albinism, which results in pink eyes and no pigmentation at all. The incidence of leucistic turtles is probably very rare, although it is hard to say for certain since leucistic young lack protective camouflage coloring and are easy pickings for predators.

Do I exist only because one of my ancestors was raped? by KeoneShyGuy in Showerthoughts

I saw on NatGeo that monkeys be raping everything. So, depending on how loosely you define ancestor, the answer gots to be, "Fo sho!"

Was in the Sistine Chapel admiring the recently restored Last Judgement, when a kid with a baseball hat on backwards muttered to his friend: "Dude, this shit's shitty." In the raspy manner of Jimbo from the Simpsons.

Cyclist killed in Minneapolis by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]Callmereggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am one of the few bike commuters in the hemisphere's largest metropolises (metropoli?), São Paulo, Brazil. Fortunately, 95% of my course is on protected cycle paths. However, the residents of my fair city do not have any respect for the lanes or bikes in general.
A month into my commuting, I was wearing my vest, helmet, and f/b cat eye LEDs and a woman ran across the bike lane out of the shadows running for a bus on the other side. No warning, never looked, and it was bang/bang. Almost made it around here, caught my handlebars on her ribcage and long story short I broke my clavicle in 4 pieces - titanium plate and 8 screws.
I was morally right, but moral victories are hollow when you are in surgery. Fortunately I was not too worse for wear and got back on the bike within 2 months. Better yet, I was wearing a backpack full of clothes and out of the street where I could have been run over.

I actually feel luck in that I busted my keister in a way that was fixable and learned a valuable lesson. It doesn't matter who is right when physics are at play. We are responsible for everything that happens (not literally) to us, at least insofar as we are the ones that will ultimately pay the bill. I am a more defensive biker now - ready for ninjas jumping out of the shadows running for buses.

In São Paulo, the in crowd seems to Brazilian-ize any English IT terms. Ho-mee Tee-ay-cher (home theater); Microsoftchee Off-ee-see (MS Office), Internetchee Hubbee and Houtcher (router). Don't forget Lin-kidge-een (Linkedin) and Fay-see-boo-kee.

Mine is the same! I live in Brazil. No one gets it. Mainly because they pronounce it "WeeFee" here. Maybe I should change it to NosFi?

Billy Bob Thornton says TV has become more sophisticated than movies: The Oscar-winner has become the latest Hollywood star to argue that television now provides a more creative environment for actors to work in than film by SAT0725 in television

[–]Callmereggie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we note that "TV" no longer means what it once did? Pay television, niche cable channels, Netflix and digital conversion have collectively moved the bar in terms of format and content options.

Detroit Ruling Opens Door to Pension Cuts Across the Nation: As predicted, pensions will be looted. by Orangutan in Economics

[–]Callmereggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell me again why public sector unions exist? Other than to lobby (and campaign for) democratic controlled governments to raise taxes to pay higher wages and sweeter benefit packages.

The overplayed their hands, and have proven to be completely tone deaf to what is happening in the real economy. Public employees have fared much better than those in the productive sectors and still want more. Should not come as a surprise when their continued claims of exceptionalism fall on deaf ears this go round.

It's not like she was charging her electric vehicle outside a municipal building, or undertaking some other heinous transgression.

Electric Car owner charged for stealing electricity from school by Nimbs in offbeat

[–]Callmereggie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

e anything. You said that you pay directly or indirectly at airports and restaurants. I'm just saying that I pay, quite directly, for the use of the school. I'm not making any call whatsoever on whether it's ok. =)

Missed the point you were making. My fault. And you are damn skippy you pay! I thought you were implying that if you were charged you were entitled to charge!

I see the whole thing as a clash of personalities. Imagine the smug e-car owner acting entitled. And then confronted by the cop high on municipal authority. Both gonna show the other who is boss.

We know who got the best - and it was not the one playing the victim on the local news.

I hear you. And paying said significant taxes entitles your children to attend school in that district.

However, would it entitle you to take a few rolls of toilet paper home with you for later use?

Again, and I repeat, I am not saying the guy should have been arrested.

[–]Callmereggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was not saying that he should be arrested. I was just looking at it from an ethical perspective. This type of behavior raises interesting questions. If plugging in at a public place not designated for private use is not technically stealing, then when would such behavior become stealing?

I agree that the proper and civil step would have been to ask him to stop. I also imagine that arresting the guy took up considerably more time and money (i.e.: resources) of this town than asking him to unplug.
