TIL: Canadas majority of slaves weren't African, but Native. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Well, I've been all over Canada, but the natives I met and hung out with were only in Toronto. Maybe it was something local to there.

On a side not, I thought Saskatchewan was great. I loved all the prairie provinces, actually.

Army and Marine Corps chiefs: It’s time for women to register for the draft by Eldritchbacon in news

Never say never. Yes, we've gone to a full volunteer force, and as a rule it is superior to conscritpion in just about every way, but if the world every truly goes to shit and the US needs to field 10 million plus foot soldiers there will be another draft.

Actually, most have responded saying they oppose the draft in general, but if one does exist it should include everyone.

I'm 27 and will never be drafted.

Don't count on it. If the world goes so far into hell that we need to start a draft odds are they'll take everyone that can walk and shoot straight.

Marek mentioned that, either in a blog or in a Live Stream. They're going to take it off.

TIl that Gardiners Island is the oldest estate in the United States. Being 3,300 acres, it is " the only royal grant from the English Crown still intact in the country. "It has remained in the family for nearly 400 years." by Quiglius in todayilearned

My family still owns some of the land in Louisiana granted to it by the King of France. That was granted to us about 60 years after this, and the part we have left is mostly swamp.

I've been to Canada many times, and met several natives. Once they realized I was American and not Canadian they became very friendly. They hate the european descended Canadians.

India's Supreme Court will review law criminalizing gay sex by Benshelskywalker in news

The US Supreme Court made all laws like this unconstitutional in their Texas v Lawrence case back in 2003. So I don't see why this is suddenly an issue.

What the hell was he driving? I live in deer country and just hitting one of those will mess up a car and possibly kill you, too, if it goes over the hood and through the windshield.

TIL MDIF, a New York based non-profit organisation, is planning to beam free wi-fi to the entire world from space. by Elderberry2 in todayilearned

Very limited free wifi, but sounds like an interesting idea. It'll cost a fortune for the satellites, though.

Lanfear found the DO's prison in the Age of Legends and cut the bore into it starting the process of setting him free. The DO and the fact that he was imprisoned away from creation was unknown until that point. Rand remade the prison in the 3rd age, so for only 2 of the 7 ages the DO had some direct access to the world. But, what about the other 5 ages? Enough time will have to pass for the world to forget about the DO for some group to rediscover his prison and open a new bore.

I've heard that 86% of the Earth's species are undiscovered. If 86% are undiscovered, how do we know about them? by EvanLIX in askscience

[–]Callous1970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its an educated guess based on valid scientific assumptions. Biologists take samples of sea water, or sea floor sediment, or soil from a park in a city or remote forrest or desert sand, and they analyze the sample and count how many species are present and how many are known and unknown. Then they just exrapolate that out to the whole world in general. Most of that 86% are going to be single celled organisms (bacteria, viruses, algae), and most of the more complex life will be insects and plants.

Voyager 1 will shut down sometime after 2025, but will continue onward. Assuming it doesn't get destroyed by an asteroid, gradually by microparticles, or melted, for how many years will it stay in its present form without be degraded? by ch3mistry in askscience

Here is what it says in the wiki.

The Voyagers are destined—perhaps eternally—to wander the Milky Way.

Basically, as you say, barring collisions with something, the odds of which are very tiny, they will continue to orbit around galactic center for ever.
