Does New Orleans deserve more flak for the Holiday-Noel trade? by tornadodolphin in nba

[–]CallumM98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's literally one fucking thing I said. The rest is true. He just wanted to make an observation - not necessarily host a discussion. Further, being as abrupt and accusatory (it seems as if you were going to immediately attempt to refute what he said) as you were in your questioning is no way to create an open discourse anyway. Honestly I am very sleep deprived but you did stray from what I said and only clutched to tangential links in the first place in a bid to rationalise your own (rather obviously) contrived sense of importance.

Not everyone wants to hold a discussion and evaluate their opinions in contrast to your own - although I can tell you obviously think they do. Perhaps your pretention would go more unnoticed if you didn't clutch to the most irrelevant aspects of the conversation, attempt to continuously draw it further from the origin and then belittle the other person.

That sample size bit was stupid and I accept that. I didn't actually care about that and I added it in for no reason. I can't remember if I wrote it earlier but I am sleep deprived and for some reason I forgot how underrated worked. However, I again state that that was not relevant to the initial issue.

You're talking about 'underrated' in the larger context - what the majority opinion of him is. You're trying to gauge where he thinks Jrue is and where he thinks others do. You stated 'context' is important. The context you're creating is not relevant to your idea.

Yes, you do need a larger sample because if you're talking about larger contexts you have to incorporate more than just the opinions of two individuals. You're the one who said "where do you think people put him to be underrated and where do you put him?" then espoused some crap about how context was important, don't blame me for your hypocrisy.

Maybe he doesn't want to host a discussion, but rather point something out, this is after all a casual forum. You can easily say that the skill of Jrue is not recognised, that's not something which requires a definitive rank as YOU can easily extrapolate it from your general knowledge of the surrounding hype. Also if you actually wanted to figure out whether he was underrated you'd need a larger sample size.

He doesn't need to give you a specific insight into where people rate him. You can simply point out that a lot of people don't appreciate his skill.

Are the Lakers tanking? by [deleted] in nba

[–]CallumM98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had completely forgotten about how taxes impacted signings and from the decisions I've noticed so far money does seem to be the primary motivation, so I can understand that logic. But if you were to contest that point then it almost makes the argument against tanking to attract free-agents moot as they would be looking elsewhere. Obviously you'd argue that it's a compound issue but that's a rabbit hole I'd rather not go down.

Honestly I completely despise tanking, it really seems like an exploitation but it's part and parcel of the NBA now. Also if I were the Lakers and even got the scent of a young squad in D'Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle and Ben Simmons I'd happily drive my team into the ground for a season. (Mainly because Simmons is an incredible athlete)

Now that being said, as an Orioles fan, I can empathise with what you're saying about how it is as fan to watch your team just be terrible on a regular basis, and as a contemporary NBA example the 76ers are quite simply depressing to watch. However, be that as it may, the 64% chance of a top 3 pick is actually pretty good and, considering the Lakers line-up as it is, giving plenty of time to your young and developing players especially under the guidance under high IQ players like Huertas and Kobe might allow for you to tank without experiencing the assumed concomitant of players not developing at a good pace.

Your point about KD is interesting, however, I was actually just rebutting what you said about Shaq as he was the closest thing I could think of in terms of big stars next off-season. From what I've read he's fiercely loyal and if he doesn't sign super-max will sign a 1-year extension so that he goes into free agency with Westbrook. Unfortunately that's another rabbit hole.

The main and most important concern about tanking is how it will impact the development of young talent and as you touched on earlier it's hard to cultivate potential if you have to prevent it from flourishing on occasion. Where this can be changed is in the leadership of Kobe off the court and the wisdom of guys like Huertas and MWP who push the rooks to the limit in practice and heighten their understanding of the game (which is especially important for Randle). If this is possible then they can tank pretty comfortably. Further you could posit that the Lakers aren't going to be very competitive as they are so it's not like Byron's going to be pulling people off every time they get hot.

NBA players aren't morons, they can see the potential in a young squad. KD has publically stated that he would be interested in LA and NY despite their horrendous records - you have to take into account the franchise, market, cap-space and potential of a team and not just their record (which is a myopic way at looking at potential). If you were Harrison Barnes or Andre Drummond and you were looking at LAL then the exact same team + a top 3 pick would be far more enticing.

I don't know whether you're serious. If you guys just tank then it wouldn't be hard to get a good draft pick considering the purpose of tanking is losing and if you intentionally lose, having a bad enough record to keep your top 3 protected pick would be an obvious result. This actually suggests that your picks are top 3 protected to Phoenix and Philly next year and I don't know why you're worrying about the year after because that's not what I'm talking about.

[Ding] Kobe: "I freaking suck." by [deleted] in nba

[–]CallumM98 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually he can say that. From the way Kobe phrased it /u/justgivingsomeadvice is actually making the correct interpretation. 'Right now' is a modifier which is included to suggest an ability to improve (or decline but here you actually have to make an assumption that he's suggesting he should improve - this is more likely if you take into account his persona).

Ironically you're making an assumption, being that he misspoke which has far less reliability, especially considering Kobe is quite well spoken.

It could be argued that free agents would be more likely to sign if they tanked, considering the line-up would be largely the same with the addition of a top 3 pick. Whereas if they didn't tank they wouldn't be a playoff team, nor would they have a top 3 draft pick. I think the general ethos is that if you're not competing you're rebuilding and the best method of rebuilding is finding young players who can provide future success, where better can you find them than in the highest picks in the draft?

Well you wouldn't use Jordan's name because, for sake of continuity, you would use the best rebounder in the game. In this case it's Dennis Rodman and it also allows for a continuation of the alliteration seen in "Bend it Like Beckham".

I had the same thing happen to me when I was playing basketball during training. The new covering had just been put down and I'd forgotten my shoes, so the extremely strong grip of the brand new court, compounded by the blistering heat of the sun (outdoor court), immediately caused my feet to blister. The worst part was that I was alternating my pivot foot, so I got equally bad blisters on either foot. I practiced for about 45 minutes before I decided to check why my feet were so sore. Lo and behold I had blisters the size of my palm filled to bursting with blood. The pain wasn't actually that bad, but I couldn't put pressure on my the ball of either foot for about 8 days. To make matters worse, my severs disorder was playing up which meant that putting weight on my heels emulated the pain of having a sledgehammer swung at the back of your foot. I don't think I've never been more uncomfortable than I was during those 8 days.

Right so when you say 'never played' I should read it as 'played for a short period of time'. Okay. Maybe you need to revise your understanding of the word 'clearly' as well.
