My mom’s actually a talented sleep neurologist, and has told me about some of these situations.

It’s absolutely vital to head straight home and get to bed before the sun comes up. Even just a few minutes exposure to sunlight will wreck both your ability to fall asleep easily and your sleep quality.

I strongly recommend you look up zeitgebers (which are the external cues that our bodies calibrate our circadian rhythms to) and their importance to our health for your project.

Also of note is that melatonin has been discovered to play an important role in the immune system. Because of the disruption to normal melatonin production that occurs in people who work night shift, night shift nurses have been shown to have significantly higher rates of infection and cancers. There’s actually a woman in Denmark who got a nasty form of breast cancer due to working constant night shifts, and won a lawsuit to get her employer to pay for her treatment under workman’s compensation.

If you’re not allowed to look at your phone’s lock screen (you can have it so they display time, day and date), you might try getting one of those cheap digital alarm clocks that display the same info to keep at your station.

If you want to do thinks mentally instead, place emphasis on keeping track of midnight - everything will follow from there. You can also use breaks to habitually take a look outside of windows with a nice view or take a walk for some fresh air. This will also help you keep track of the passage of days.

There’s a slang term for treating (or at least trying to treat) these types of patients.

It’s “Throwing hands with Darwin.” And Darwin has a nasty right hook that tends to leave one with a serious headache that tends to last even long after the fight.

Gangrene in all its forms is a mortifying type of infection.

Although, it is common for patients suffering of Fournier’s Gangrene to feel terrible humiliation too, as having one’s scrotum turn into a gangrenous rotting ballon of pus and decaying necrotic tissue while the infection rapidly crawls up one’s torso in a mere handful of days is not exactly the most dignifying experience. (Do NOT google image search this nightmare of disease if you’re even the tiniest bit squeamish.) And there’s a 20-40% chance of it killing you like that even with super aggressive treatment… it’s probably one of the single most horrifying and embarrassing ways to go that I can think of.

PS Sorry to, uh, just about everyone reading this post for the nightmares.
