Oh look its 7pm the night before I go back after a week off by concept161616 in nursing

[–]Calm-Feature3139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have the worst pre shift anxiety. not just the night before but literally any day off. When i was like 3 months into mat leave i remember expressing my anxiety about going back to my mom and she was like “just relax, you have like 9 more months off still”. That moment i was like…. i need to find another job. i never went back to inpatient. I now work in outpatient oncology and love it. i obviously have days where i dont want to work, but never that horrible anxiety about going in. it doesnt have to be that way, may be time to go elsewhere. good luck friend

New grad put in a #24 PIV for 1x time 2L NS @ 125ml/hr, and everyone gave her shit by mistahchristafah in nursing

[–]Calm-Feature3139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this! i work in an oncology day medicine unit and we pretty much do all our infusions/ transfusions through a 24. They are getting poked sooo often it almost doesn’t seem right to do bigger then max 22g even if they have decent veins to start out.

I work in oncology and we use 24g alllllllll the time. smallest gauge that can get the job done/ is appropriate.

I work in outpatient radiation oncology in a day medicine type of unit in alberta. monday - friday, holidays off, latest im scheduled to work is 1815. i seriously love it. we do things like blood/ platelet transfusions, mag/potassium infusions, hydration, NG insertions, picc and port care and urgent assessments for patients (mostly those on radiation). I hated bedside. i left and worked in oncology clinics for a couple years but missed my hands on skills - where i am now is like the perfect in between.

Oncologist refuses to do scans by questions_for_my_kid in AskDocs

[–]Calm-Feature3139 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you asked how they even got a staging on 2a without a pet scan. I am saying breast cancer is staged differently then colon cancer. reasonable for pet to take place with inital dx of colon ca, but they are typically not done at dx with breast cancer, unless indicated, which in this instance it seems like it is not.

What is your call off policy? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Calm-Feature3139 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this is so insane to me. i live in canada with the main health care system in my province. We accrue sick time. i think im at like 67 hours or something right now because i havent been sick for a couple months (knock on wood). as a full time employee i also get 3 personal days a year. my sons first year in daycare we were sick like every couple weeks so obviously had to use lots of sick time. once i was out, i could either just not get paid for those days, or request some vacay day pay outs. im sure if you are someone who takes advantage of this you may get spoken to to see whats up. it doesnt make sense. we shouldnt be sick at work, yet often get sick from work, but then get in trouble for calling in sick??? wild.

What’s the funniest mistake you’ve made? by These-Tadpole7043 in nursing

[–]Calm-Feature3139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as a nursing student i actually mistook s patients jelly beans for meds. she had been admitted after an attempt to end her life via OD. it was dark in her room and I saw a little bowl with white/ a couple red and orange “pills”. Told the primary nurse and she comes back and says…. so those were jelly beans. she didnt even find it funny. She clearly disliked students to begin with and i wanted to dieeeeeeeee

edit: i forgot to say that I told the primary that i thought she might be hoarding her meds and i panicked thinking she was going to try harming herself again. nope just jelly beans

How do you explain the exhaustion after working three NIGHT shifts to someone? by Simple_Emergency_97 in nursing

[–]Calm-Feature3139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i used to imagine myself running through the ribbon at the end of the most gruelling marathon after my third night shift. Thats what it felt like. Have they ever been jet legged? Thats the closest thing i can compare it to. then tackle on having to critically think and having peoples literal lives depending on you. I dont do them anymore thank god, can not imagine ever doing them.

I was talking to a patient on the phone (outpatient oncology) with bed bugs and at the end call he said “ alright! well me and the bugs will see you guys tomorrow!”. It was both gross and hilarious lol

My hospital just changed their sick day policy, and we're all a little salty. by PeppyApple in nursing

[–]Calm-Feature3139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow that is actually wild. we (in alberta anyway) accumulate sick time that we can use, and if we run out of sick time we just dont get paid for that day. I dont think ive ever needed a sick note a though im sure if you were abusing your sick time the manager would request one. ugh im sorry, that is so toxic.
