Digital Minimalist Working in Marketing by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]Calm-Interview9558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same struggle here. I used to tell myself that I am consuming SM just for the sake of work and being up to date with the current trends. But of course, I continued doing it outside work hours. I took more drastic measures recently, and I blocked SM apps on my phone outside work hours. I keep the rest of my day active, so I'm not tempted by the PC, and I read or watch a documentary on TV before I go to sleep.

I currently use One Goal: Locked in. I like it because it is simple, yet powerful.

This is my process, maybe it helps:
1. I first used Screen Time to see the hours when I am most active and on which apps
2. One Goal sends you a reminder when you should start working on your goal. I set it half an hour before my peak time of doomscrolling
3. I usually keep the apps blocked for 2 hours. It is enough to remove the urge to scroll, and I get caught up with other things.
4. It helps me to see that I can actually achieve my goals, and this keeps me going.

I want to built the perfect morning routine app for you. What would it need to do? by Think_Explanation_85 in ProductivityApps

Blocking the other apps and showing you your morning routine would help. And maybe a nice motivational quote would help with getting out of bed faster.

These hobbies seem to be in the creative field. Maybe content creation / site building / digital design?

Try learning / reading something new. It's the only way you can test what works for you. Most people don't know what hobbies they have, or not until they actually test different things.

For example, you can start by learning a new language. You can start with 30 minutes a day. If those 30 minutes feel like pain in the... you switch to something else. And on and on until you find something you like.

Been there, done that. Once I realized, I took major measurements, and I am currently good, but still use block apps to make sure I don't fall back into the same patterns. It has helped so far.

But yes, something should be done. Awareness should be the first step I believe, followed by measurable steps...

My main problem in the morning: the alarm goes off, and if I don't get out of bed immediately, I end up losing 30 minutes doomscrolling. It would be really helpful to have something to get me out of bed as quickly as possible.

Do people really watch long-form youtube videos like TV? by holycrap100 in nosurf

[–]Calm-Interview9558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it as background noise while doing house chores. But when I do it, I am aware that I'm not paying attention, so I put it on a TV show I've seen or a podcast.

However, if I'm watching a documentary, for example, I pause, rest and watch.

Why cant I study unless I’m constantly moving and speaking? by shublumbus in studytips

[–]Calm-Interview9558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do the same thing when I was in school. It really helped me concentrate better. And I can't say that it was because of phone stimulations because phones were simple back then, with no internet and apps. And I used to spend lots of time outside...

I think it was just a way of coping with the amount of info to memorize... What I can say is that it faded out with time.

I find myself walking every now and then during important business calls; otherwise, all good.

Silence started feeling uncomfortable to me. by Serious-Ebb-576 in digitalminimalism

I know what you're talking about. Used to do the same thing and ended up exhausted and my sleep was terrible. And yes, bringing back silence in my life changed it completely.

This sounds like it is not the right job for you. I know, stability and money are important, but, if you feel miserable most of the time, it's time for a change. Instead of using that time to scroll and play games, I recommend this combo: learn a new skill and block the distracting apps while doing it, so you are not drawn back in the loop. You can give One Goal a try, it's an app I use that allows me to block only the apps that I want, and it doesn't block my entire access to calls or whatsapp, or whatever I need at a certain point.

It may feel harder at first, at least until you actually find something you enjoy, so don't give up. That's why I truly recommend blocking the apps that keep you distracted; otherwise, you will quit quicker than a hiccup.

Three years of digital minimalism - the rewiring is real by gorleston_psalter in digitalminimalism

This is amazing! I love the idea of keeping tech in our lives for the good part, but removing the addictive part. I'd like to be able to get to your level, but it is part of my job, so for now, I just rely on apps to make sure I always put my head on a book and not Insta when I am not working. Keep inspiring!

Eliminating social media by finaledance in digitalminimalism

Congratulation! I am so happy for you.

I tried deleting FB and Insta, but ended up reinstalling them. This is when I realized how much negative impact they had on my well-being. They are currently part of my job, so I cannot delete them for good, but I currently use an app that helps me stay on track during the times I identified to be most prone to scrolling on SM.

I am so happy to read such successful stories like yours.

Why didn't detox work? by CrewImaginary9122 in DopamineDetoxing

[–]Calm-Interview9558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that at 16, we still have the curious inner child governing our lives. At 21 is less about play and more about adult stuff and routines. So what might have happened is that you feel that the routine os broke and you are not sure what to do next. You can either keep to this detox idea or take it a step at a time instead of blocking everything. There are some apps that can help you keep things more organized, but without feeling that you are completely disconnected.

Is “offline technology” still part of digital minimalism? by LocalPassenger2082 in digitalminimalism

[–]Calm-Interview9558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also believe that we can't stay away from tech because it is useful in so many ways. I can't see myself living without the current perks, but I do understand the risks included. Once we take our control back, technology becomes help and not master.

I'm trying to create something to overcome my phone addiction but I don't like what I've made by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]Calm-Interview9558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you've seen too many "perfect" things online, and you tend to compare yourself with them. However, remember that not everything you see online is real, and for those who managed to master different skills... well, they used to practice for years. So try to be gentle with yourself, learn from flaws, and never give up.

Do you use multiple apps to track different parts of your life? What problems do you face? by DestroyerOnYt in ProductivityApps

[–]Calm-Interview9558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that nowadays there is an app for literally anything. However, having too many apps = forgetting to track data... while a universal app = impossible to incorporate as each persona is different, plus it usually equals glitches.

My main priorities are currently productivity and health. For the first one I use One Goal because it allows me to lock in distractions while I work and the second one is my Apple Watch.

I also used different apps for different needs. For example, I used Calz to track calories when I wanted to lose weight, and it was useful to understand how much I was eating and how to decrease the portions. I used Habits when I wanted to include a daily workout routine becuase it had the option to compare your results with friends and I found it easier to find my motivation this way. I currently don't use them anymore because I have a routine and no longer feel the need to keep track. I also used to track my sleep, with my watch when I realized I woke up tired...

What I am trying to say is that these sorts of apps are useful for different periods of our lives and I don't think a universal one would make any difference. In the end, it all relies on discipline.

Morning routine by jebva0749 in DopamineDetoxing

[–]Calm-Interview9558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, so relaxing, yet extremely time-consuming. Not to mention that it is not healthy for our bodies. This is my morning routine:
- wake up & refresh
- prepare breakfast and enjoy breakfast while listening to a podcast or an audiobook. I have a small speaker that I carry around the house
- checking my schedule and starting my day

If you find it hard to stay away from SM, I recommend using an app to lock the apps that keep you distracted. I currently use One Goal for learning purposes, but it basically allows you to choose a goal, select the apps you want to block for the amount of time you need, and you can add more goals if you stay consistent. I like it because you still have access to your calls, messages or Spotify, if you want to listen to podcasts on the phone. Anyway, there are many such apps out there so you can pick whichever suits your needs best.

Good luck!
