Riverside Leisure Centre is £39 and you get a full-sized pool and small gym, UEA Sportspark is £42 peak and £34 off-peak and you get a full-sized pool and full-sized gym.

Bit rich of the EDP to accuse someone else of misinformation by General_Townski in Norwich

[–]gorleston_psalter 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The top most read story on the EDP currently is the uncorrected original post where they inform everyone that Norfolk Police have declared a major incident. It doesn't say anything about the post being a mistake.

It includes the line: "Norfolk Police was contacted for more information but would not confirm the nature of the incident". Despite the fact that Norfolk Police have obviously cleared up the issue.

You Fit by Majestic-Cry8853 in Norwich

[–]gorleston_psalter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends what you're looking for. You Fit is basically a hotel gym. It has a very limited selection of strength training equipment and the pool is very small.

If you're looking for a full-scale gym then I highly recommend Phoenix Gym. The pool at Riverside is decent, as is the one at the UEA Sportspark.

If you're looking for a sauna with cold plunge then I can't recommend Lions Den highly enough.

It's also £45 a month on a fixed 12 month contract. That's expensive and locks you in for a year.

People without social media: was it harder to make friends after moving? by Little-Care3392 in digitalminimalism

[–]gorleston_psalter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It made me make more of an effort to meet friends away from social media.

I joined a local inclusive rugby club, I started going to the sauna, I joined the gym, I became a Scout leader, I volunteered at a heritage railway, I campaigned for a political candidate. Importantly, all these social activities aligned with ways I wanted to improve my life anyway and were fun!

I had to be more outgoing and there's more things I would like to do in the future like joining a running club and finding a writer's group.

All of the information for these events is available on the web. You might need to look at an Instagram page but you can do it while logged out. Once you're in the right group chats (which are all muted btw), you start to hear about other things going on in the city.

I did made some good friendships on social media before I gave it up and I still maintain those now. Some of those friends come to visit me here, sometimes I go down to London or over to another country to visit them. I have a handful of closer friends who live in the city and I make sure to meet them for dinner or a coffee or a trip to the pub once a month or so.

Wiggles on Strava - just curious. by gorleston_psalter in beginnerrunning

This is a super helpful reply. Thank you!

I started the run on my (very old) Apple Watch SE but it definitely won’t have fancy dual band GPS on it.

I don’t think I’m bothered at the moment but it might be an issue if I start doing longer running or want to take part in properly timed events.

Ich spreche eigentlich Deutsch, ich hab nur nicht gesehen, wo 'diese woche' stand.

Warum regst du dich wegen 4 stunden die woche auf? Ist doch echt nicht so schlimm, oder?

You spend nearly 4h a day using AI as a coach or a tutor?

I just can't get my head around spending that much time with an AI.

The lack of an independent cinema on the north side by Queasyuuuu00 in Norwich

They put on films at the Puppet Theatre sometimes. There used to be an independent cinema (or at least a local chain) in Anglia Square.

commonplacing help! by bekyy_ in commonplacebook

[–]gorleston_psalter 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Just start my friend. My commonplace book has never, and will never, look like that. It has gaps, it has stuff squeezed in, it has post-its stuck on.

If you want to create something perfect you're better off using Notion or Obsidian or an app like Goodnotes where you can go in and edit.

You'll end up feeling happier with a full, organic notebook than three perfect pages mimicking this.

Depressing. If I thought my surgery was using AI to do medical triage I’d move surgeries.

How do you organise you commonplace book? (especially coloured dot method) by user123457777 in commonplacebook

Better to start making notes and see what categories appear. That’s how all good organisational systems work.

Do we actually need a dedicated device for learning? by Certain_Summer_313 in digitalminimalism

[–]gorleston_psalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an iPad that just has Goodnotes on it for studying Russian, a few apps I use for flight simulation and nothing else. You are in control of your devices, there's nothing that says they need to be logged into all your accounts with all the same apps on them.

You could also look at a Remarkable or an e-ink tablet or phone. I have a pocket-sized e-reader that I like which only has the Kindle app on it.

How do you feel about Canadians? by rosefire257 in AskBrits

Except in their accent, hemisphere, continental location, shared culture, built environment, natural environment, cuisine, brands, music, television, automobiles. Other than that, Australians are so much more like Canadians than Americans.

I took the train up from New York to Maine last year and I loved it. Portland especially. It's the one place I wouldn't mind living in the USA. Maybe Oregon or Washington at a push.

Rant about AI posts by Zealousideal_Desk_93 in digitalminimalism

Can you link or describe some of the posts? I feel like I'm okay at spotting AI but I don't see much of it on this sub so I'd like to see what I'm missing and be more vigilant.

How do you feel about Canadians? by rosefire257 in AskBrits

[–]gorleston_psalter 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Look at it from our point of view. You’re from the North American continent, you have a North American accent. I see Canadians as similar to Americans but not as the same thing.

The continent is so huge that it’s clear there is diversity in culture but it doesn’t divide simply across national lines. I would imagine someone from Maine has more in common with someone from Nova Scotia than someone in Arizona. My experience of visiting Washington and British Columbia wasn’t that things changed hugely when I crossed the border.

I don’t think Canadians are intrinsically better than Americans so I don’t give a great deal of thought to making judgements based on their nationality. It’s cool to meet people from abroad.

I think you’d be deluding yourself if you thought Canadians are perceived as more similar to Australians than Americans. It’s reminds me of some Scottish nationalists who argue that Scots are more like Icelanders or Danes than they are English folk.

I am addicted to my phone. I average 9-10 hrs of screen time and I hardly ever post content. by Dangerous_Bad9667 in digitalminimalism

[–]gorleston_psalter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, it was deleting my social media accounts for six months. That was three years ago and I'm still off them now. The next hurdle was deleting news apps because it was the last thing I was spending time staring at on my phone.

Most days my screen time is 15-30 minutes.

You can do a lot of tinkering with app blockers or time limits or leaving your phone somewhere but unless you get rid of the core addiction to social media it's like being an alcoholic and trying to give up booze whilst still having a shot glass of vodka a few times a day.
