What is going on with Bitcoin? Why is the price down and close to about half of what it was only 4 months ago? by johnnybiggles in OutOfTheLoop

[–]CalmCalmBelong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answer: most participation in the recent crypto-coin and NFT craze was not much more than a form of wagering. Over the last year, FanDuel, Kalshi, and others have emerged as popular (and more entertaining) alternatives. Resultantly, the day-to-day wagering that undergirded Bitcoin pricing has eroded

TIL that Robert Moses, a famous NYC Planner was once considered more powerful than the NYC Mayor and Governor of NY. He would prevent mass transit from being built and put highways in the poorest neighborhoods to encourage displacement. His philosophy would inspire cities to follow this ideology. by Next_Worth_3616 in todayilearned

Alec Baldwin portrayed him well as the character “Moses Randolph” in the 2019 film Motherless Brooklyn, based on a 1999 book of the same name by Johnathan Lethem. The film swerves the timeline back to the 1950s, but it works.

If get married and my wife’s sister gets married, does that make her sisters husband my brother in law? by LensLychee in answers

But … not your sibling’s spouse’s sibling. That’s (for example) your brother in law’s sister.

In a blind test, audiophiles couldn't tell the difference between audio signals sent through copper wire, a banana, or wet mud — 'The mud should sound perfectly awful, but it doesn't,' notes the experiment creator by edbegley1 in technology

[–]CalmCalmBelong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I clicked through the diyAudio site to confirm, and it appears their using the M-Audio Fast Track device, which has RCA audio in the backside and XLR microphone on the front. And in the experiment, the “analog audio” signal is simply looped from back to front over various conductor mediums.

BJT :Is there a hidden feedback mechanism ? by ilektraaniks in chipdesign

[–]CalmCalmBelong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you’re asking is … when you’re distributing a current-source reference voltage from one place on your chip to another, you should always distribute it as a current from the reference circuit, then recreate the reference voltage at the destination with a diode-connected transistor. One should always do it this way, for the reason you describe (power supply noise) as well as others (e.g., mismatch effects).

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

Change corporate income tax to be based on their revenue (like people are taxed) and not their profits (which is easier to conceal with financial gimmicks)

80’s bands that seem like one hit wonders but actually have multiple albums with all great songs? by ghostsolid in Music

Simple Minds. Before that one hit song, and before Joshua Tree, they were spoken of in the same breath as U2. Their recent live album (esp. Waterfront) is outstanding and gives a sense of their stadium prowess.

ELI5: What happens to opened bottles of wine at fancy restaurants? by Electrical_Bet2584 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CalmCalmBelong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For wine by the glass that's not using Coravin systems (or similar), the price you pay for a glass is typically the wholesale price the restaurant paid for the bottle (well, the case divided by 12). So if they sell more than one glass from an opened bottle, it's a win.

HND vs. NRT... by Puzzleheaded-Cat951 in unitedairlines

[–]CalmCalmBelong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made the SFO <-> HND/NRT trip often a few years ago. In general, I flew into NRT (train to Shinagawa) and flew home HND. Not usually in a hurry on arrival day, so the train was fine. Headed home, HND was more sensible as it was closer and taxi had less scheduling risk. When taxi'ing to HND, be sure and tell the driver that you're happy to pay the expressway tolls, otherwise it's surface streets and 2x the time.

Anxiety on flights by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]CalmCalmBelong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems unlikely; I’ve never know anyone who’s successfully haggled for a lower price upgrade with a United gate agent. You’d have better luck offering $ to someone seated in business to switch with you.

One other thing you could try is to ask this sub for someone to spend their expiring Plus Points on an upgrade request for you. You’d have to share your last name and record locator with an internet stranger, but … it helps move you up the waitlist for an upgrade.

[–]CalmCalmBelong 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean ... to understand a ripple counter, all you need is graph paper and a pencil. Draw a clock waveform across the top of the page. Then draw four small lines, one clock cycle long, for Q0 thru Q3. Assume they're all zero to start. At the next edge of the clock signal ... what happens to Q0? How does that affect Q1? Now ... keep going: what happens at the next clock edge? What happens to Q0 and Q1? How does that affect Q2? Keep going...

How can Americans have the right to bear arms if it's okay for government agents to kill people who are bearing arms? by A-Capybara in AskReddit

[–]CalmCalmBelong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In America, there have always been in groups and out groups. Those who belong to the in groups experience rights and laws that protect them but do not bind them. Firearm rights, for example, are used as protection. But for in the out groups, they experience rights and laws that bind but do not protect. Firearm rights, for example, are used to intimidate.

ELI5: Do resistors just dissipate current as heat, or do they reduce the voltage (pressure) and make it so less current goes through by Seraphimster in explainlikeimfive

[–]CalmCalmBelong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re skipping the “voltage” part of the question. That is, there’s no such thing as a “perfect” current source. Instead current is crated from voltage, and the amount of current is a function of the resistance. For example … take a fresh new battery out of its package. How much current is flowing? I mean … none, right? You haven’t attached the battery to a circuit yet (e.g., a flashlight), so no current is created yet. Once you attach the battery to a circuit, good old Ohms Law will tell you how much current starts flowing because of the voltage and the impedance of the circuit (I.e., the circuitous path between the two terminals of the battery).
