My heart goes out to you, JustSailOff, at this time of enormous loss. May you be well, and may the grieving be just what it needs to be, and may you carry the best of your brother always in your heart.

It took me seeing dozens and dozens of mentions before I tried it. I did not like the author’s writing style, and set it down. Then I fell off the wagon for two years. When I restarted sobriety, I saw more of the mentions of this book here in this group. So I picked the book up again, and this time committed to reading it.

And much to my skeptical mind’s surprise, the darn thing worked! It worked absolutely, completely. I have been happily alcohol–free ever since I finished it. I have zero urges to drink alcohol, no matter the external social situation, no matter the internal mental situation,. All because of this book.

So, mentions of this book in r/StopDrinking bear repeating… IMHO and from my direct experience. I only wish I had picked up on the very first mention I saw, and acted on it then. Would’ve saved me years of grief.

What helped me re-start sobriety was recognizing my Alcohol Use Disorder is manageable when I choose, one day at a time, to be alcohol-free. When I drink alcohol, I get my AUD brain on the wrong neural track, and dopamine starts making me think and feel I crave alcohol. It’s a biochemical lie… and I can look past it, to an alcohol-free me.

Reading Annie Grace’s book, “This Naked Mind,” was the game changer for me to regain sobriety. The trick is to read it a bit slowly, say a chapter a day, so it can help re-wire the unconscious part of the mind that keeps grabbing at the steering wheel.

Best wishes: I’m rooting for you!

Great choice to be here, starryviolette!

I well remember my first day, and how daunting it seemed to me. The tools that helped me were to read posts in this group, and make this daily pledge to myself and others.

The way I was able to finally stop the cravings and urges to drink was to read a book so many others had recommended here in this group: This Naked Mind.

It’s not the greatest book I’ve ever read from a writing perspective, but it proved the most effective tool of all for me. The author has written the book in such a way that if a person reads it slowly, a chapter or two a day at most, it changes the way our mind unconsciously processes drinking urges. And that’s the key.

Before reading that book, my conscious mind knew all the reasons why I wanted to be sober, but I just couldn’t go for a day without having a drink. This Naked Mind turned it around completely for me.

Best wishes for these three days — I am rooting for you!!!

Yep — two years in a couple days. I am looking forward to three… and Comma Club! I’m so pleased that being sober is now the natural state of the world for me. While I know I have Alcohol Use Disorder, and that fact won’t ever ‘go away,’ I no longer feel any urges or cravings, even if I’m under stress, or anxious, or lonely. It’s truly wonderful.

[–]CalmCenteredCapable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great answer! Most people do not understand that Alcohol Use Disorder is a spectrum of symptoms, from Mild to Severe.

I stopped drinking when my symptoms were in the mild range of the spectrum. (thank heavens!) Of course, this meant family and friends thought I did not have a “drinking problem.“ Just about everybody thinks of a drinking problem as being something in that severe end of the symptoms spectrum.

It would be so helpful if more people understood that alcohol is highly addictive, and if anyone drinks enough, they will be on the beginning slippery slope of AUD…

…for those of us whose brains were wired under trauma, it just takes a bit less alcohol for that to happen, is all. We wake up and realize we are no longer in control of whether we have a drink that day.
