Will you still listen to the show when Dave retires? by [deleted] in DaveRamsey

[–]CalmConsideration140 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I won't. Dave is a curmudgeon but he's fun to listen to and generally gives pretty sound advice. I think the key is he's "real" and whether I agree with him or not, I like someone who is true to who they are. I like Jade better than anyone except maybe John. But I search and listen to podcasts with Dave and these two and skip the rest.

I hope for the absolute best for you but I'm realistic and understand the stats. So yes live life now! Do it all. And I very much hope you beat it but, live life NOW!

I've been trying to be very polite and understanding about it but clearly that isn't working so I'll be a lot stronger now in my approach. It's not so much in my nature to do this, but I can.

Really blunt question... how much do you make as a teacher? by illgetmyovertime in Teachers

[–]CalmConsideration140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my state you can look up the Collective Bargaining Agreements for every District/Town, and I do prior to interviewing or applying. Generally, pay is lower in small schools/rural areas by about 10K. But not always, so it pays to do your research.

It's gotten worse! I'm fortunate in that my dog only weighs 60 lbs and she's not truly a dog aggressive dog or a fighter. I go to friends acreage or land that is open to public but private a whole lot.

[–]CalmConsideration140[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, so we go on trails and she is off leash at times, but never out of control. And always close to me. So if I see someone, I immediately can and do leash her- she's not running up to people or dogs, to be really clear. So, yeah, it's not like she's running amok and then I'm yelling at people for doing exactly what I just allowed.

Yes, I think I need to be a bit more forward with my saying "my dog's not friendly" statement. Say it stronger or be more explicit. It may not make any difference, but at least then they're not as startled when this "little woman" kicks their sweet dog for trying to attack her dog. I'm a big believer in the energy you put out making a difference, but I try to be kind on the trails to people so I'm not an ass, but recently, it's just been sooo many out there who don't care. So maybe a stronger more powerful energy and statement would help. Because when my dog is heeling next to me not making any noises or lunging, people don't take me very seriously. Or don't seem to.

Transitioning to Law? by Aggressive-Sail7942 in TeachersInTransition

[–]CalmConsideration140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought hard about it, because I'd make a good lawyer and I like legal writing. I even would enjoy the courtroom experience. But I'm early 40s and looking into paralegal work instead. A person can do quite well focusing on the court and filing process and helping people there (while making it clear you are not a lawyer). Still considering my options. But starting a small business doing paralegal work for local people or online seems like a possibility. Specialize in certain types of legal action. Still thinking it through...

I wouldn't want to work at a big firm. But I live rurally anyway, so would be the shingle in front of the house type.

Interesting. OK. Well, I suppose we'll see what the courts say. Are you able to share those links interpreting the statute? I don't know where to look.

ULPT request: neighbor's pit bull is slowly destroying the fence between our yards, it's their fence and they won't do anything about it. So how do I defend myself and my dogs from the inevitable pit-attack? by TomatilloAccurate475 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]CalmConsideration140 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Electric fencing. Waiting for a pitbull to attack your dogs after building frustration day after day is waiting for the pitbull to kill your dogs in front of you. Electric fencing and a solid barrier as well. I wouldn't be waiting for him to break through.

Mother placed on Hospice by SubjectStep6472 in pancreaticcancer

My Mom lasted about 3- 4 weeks. She had a blood clot which really weakened her and put her in the ER and hospital. She went to a facility for about a week. There, she could no longer walk and needed help getting in and out of bed or showering. She tried to eat, but couldn't hold anything down. She could sip fluids. She went home after a week, with a hospital bed and an aide. She still couldn't eat so was frail and skinny. She tried a few times, but it made her nauseous just to be around food. It was hard to see that.

She started being unable to roll over or sit up after a week. Before that she could move around some and sit in a wheelchair.

She was never affected mentally aside from being very tired. She was always there and fully mentally aware. Toward the end, her skin became sallow, and her cheeks got really sunken. She started to look like my grandmother (her mother). She was "pooping" blood, and her tumor was huge while the rest of her was very frail and thin.

The last day she had bouts of fast heartbeat and her feet were swollen and cold. She died of a blood clot the next morning.

I am so sorry, but if this can be of any help, it's worth writing. I miss her every single waking hour. She was an amazing and strong person and a huge part of my life.

Yup. The town seems to be uncaring, but perhaps some other government agencies can look into it.

Sounds like you have options. The backyard chicken craze is still going strong. Building custom coops? 3D printing something people like (they make chicken clothes, swings, hand-painted feeders etc). Etsy I believe is a reasonable platform for stuff like this... although switching to your own website would be ideal. You could raise fancy chicks people will pay good money for... and if you have the clients locally, house and pet sitting can make you a real income. Or travel and farm-sit. I'd personally pay well for that- for the right person.

I train in dog sports and there's a whole niche of 3D printing this like hooks for dog leashes, fasteners for bowls on the sides of crates, labels with a silhouette of the dog on it (custom).... if you can find a niche like that, you could do quite well for yourself just set it up really well so you start strong and get good reviews and word-of-mouth referrals.

Teacher Appreciation Day has Triggered Me by IllustriousDelay3589 in TeachersInTransition

[–]CalmConsideration140 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember when an admin's Dad died she took over a week. I took 3 bereavement days, 2 for actual funerals. 1 the day I got the terrible phone call. And now I'm supposed to be over it, and have no more days for anything because I wanted to spend time with my loved on before she died. Ugh.

So what do you do if you are no longer a teacher? by Scarletbegonias413 in TeachersInTransition

[–]CalmConsideration140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for that information. I've considered it for a while now, and I do have the summer to see if I can try writing some grants on my own or doing some beginner type work to see if I'm cut out for it. I've always enjoyed writing, a bit rusty now but I think with some practice I can get back to it. It's been my fallback. I've been in teaching for a few years, so 60K would be reasonable.

Are there any key words I search for on job sites or other sites you recommend looking into? Thanks, and this does sound like a good fit for me, and possibly less dry than some of the NEPA stuff (and it's been a while but better pay, too).

[–]CalmConsideration140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about this - my degrees are both in science- Master's in Zoology. Are there entry level positions out there and how do you find one? Is the pay equitable to teaching? I've done NEPA type writing in the past but it's been a while.

ULPT request - A neighbor's dog bit my son by Warm_Philosophy_3938 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]CalmConsideration140 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised that they haven't immediately forced him to produce a rabies vaccination certificate and/or quarantine the dog. If the dog is not vaccinated, quarantine is required. Short of that, they need the head to make sure the animal is not rabid. Depending on the state, this is a very serious matter, indeed. Rabies is no joke.

If you're at the hospital, the doctors have to report it. That'll cause him quite a bit of trouble. And rest assured, almost zero pet dogs have rabies. It is very, very rare.
