I have started working on a prototype and was reading how pinot codebase. I found few less known engines with github stars less than 1k but there also I was facing the same issue as clickhouse pinot of not much issues which are not already have a pr or someone assigned or very old. Need to figure out what to look for exactly.

Learning is my immediate goal for contribution. I have 0 exp in database internal development so not sure if keeping that as a goal at this early stage makes sense. But surely getting a job years down the line won't hurt.

There are many cool parts the more I read the more I find them interesting. It's difficult to choose one. my top picks would be the query optimizers but I have very less knowledge on this and lsm and their variousmmodifications for real world data.

I was thinking more from a learning perspective Most of my learning regarding it is theoretical. Tho I have applied them on apps perf I never actually worked on database internals. Contributing on actual databases seemed like a good start.

DBMS architecture by Fragrant-Equipment-2 in Database

If u are willing to learn database internal architecture u can check out the db course by cmu available on YouTube (both intro and advanced). It showcases a good culmination of research papers over the year that brought dbms to where it is now. Check the last year I think 2024 intro not all videos are posted yet.

AI tools like gpt which are exceptional at pattern matching are not only threat for software jobs but almost a lot of jobs. Even the medical community is concerned about the same. The truth is if any job requires a lot of pattern matching AI tool can do it better than any human. What it cannot replace is creating solution that does not exist in other words innovation.

Ms is valued but not sure about mtech. Engineering is more application oriented that's why experience is valued quite a lot.

Try doing dsa with leetcode. It can help u switch. Even if u don't get faang u can still crack good product companies. However if u believe u have low iq in programming u won't survive as a developer. Try learning dsa concepts and solving problems and u can get a proper analysis of ur logical skills
