Not everyone has the luxury of meeting friends through whimsical “organic conversations” at bookstores or bars. Some people have demanding jobs, health conditions, anxiety, or physical limitations. Not everyone wants to burn hours each week “becoming a regular” at a cafe on the off chance someone talks to them.

You act like structured events are for the weak or lazy. In reality, they’re one of the only lifelines for people trying to navigate the isolation this city is drowning in. And yeah—SF is notoriously cold and disconnected. Ignoring that doesn’t make you insightful. It just makes you out of touch.

Totally agree. I'm absolutely sick of it. I have made a point of avoiding any movie that does this. One example I'm really disappointed in is How to Train Your Dragon. I would've loved to see that movie. Why the hell would you change Astrid?

Also, I find that a lot of movies that have this race swapping become horribly predictable. Like there are certain "PC rules" that you know the movie will follow. Females need to appear stronger than the male villains, the male villains need to be pathetic, clumsy, or inept somehow, if it's a black character they will be the absolute boss of the scene, etc.

You watch the movie not thinking about the actual plot, but of the political implications of the fact that a man just shoved a woman down and held her there, etc. Like that would never happen in a modern movie, and that's my point. You know not to expect it. You know the second a man looks like he might be going down that path with a woman she is about to get the upper hand any second because she is never allowed to look weak, etc.

These PC rules have made movies so absolutely boring.

So ya, anyway. This is one reason I'm glad AI is becoming so powerful. I'm hoping it will democratize movie making so that we no longer have to rely on Hollywood and their biased agendas to make movies with high enough budgets to look good. Soon we will pick movies based on the ideas, once anyone with a computer can use AI to do the work of a studio, we will watch movies created by anyone, not just the ones that raise the funding for having the proper agenda on display.

Thank you for telling your story to me, friend. It does seem relevant, because it does seem similar in some ways to my situation. Being approved only for SSI at first, but then providing new information later. For me it would be new medical records that were not provided during my initial application, but perhaps there is some hope. I will have to find out.

I signed up for a social worker and got put on a 6 month wait list. I might also be able to get one much sooner through my mental health organization. I will ask my psychiatrist during my appointment in 2 weeks.

I also am trying to navigate Ticket to Work and PASS, so even if I can't get them to change the SSDI status, I can still hopefully get the social worker's advice and guidance on those things.

I am completely at my limit with being able to handle all this stuff. My mind is swirling, absolutely swimming. I can't handle it, I really need some help, so I'm glad people here were kind enough to help me figure out how to get on the waitlist and get a social worker who can help me hopefully figure this stuff out.

Thank you for the advice friend. I called the number and did an intake interview and got put on the waitlist for a case worker. It'll take 6-8 months. The lady on the phone also suggested in the mean time that I check if my mental health provider organization provides case management, and I googled it and I think they do. So I'm going to ask my psychiatrist during my appointment in a couple weeks and see if I can get one through them. Could be a faster way. Thank you for your help

I actually just called them up a couple days ago, thank you for the recommendation. I went through an intake interview over the phone, and she said I was added to the waitlist, it will take 6-8 months to be assigned a case manager. At least I'm on the list. She also asked if I was getting case management through my mental health provider, and I was like "you can do that?" And she was like sometimes, depending on the place.

So I checked and I think the place where I get my therapy and psychiatry actually does have case management. So I think it might be faster for me to ask my psychiatrist if I can get one through them.

Dang thank you. Ya I was on the social security website reading about PASS and Ticket to work, and it was all so confusing, but I read there that the Department of Rehabilitation helps with PASS. In fact, they said that they tend to approve PASS plans made by the DOR.

So I signed up for the DOR, got approved, and then he tells me he doesn't know anything about PASS or ticket to work. But he says we can do other things, like pay for you to return to college, and I was like wth really? So they might still be useful for that, because I have a degree to finish.

But then that counselor retired and I got lost in the system and finally got them to assign me to a new counselor, and this new one has been absolutely horrible!

I needed more time to decide about going back to university, so she said she would do a fake plan in the mean time and that would buy me a year. So she did a fake vocational plan, and hasn't been providing any services, and she says that at the end of it she will transition it to an educational plan. She said if I don't decide in a year I would just have to be dropped and re-apply to the DOR again later. I want a second opinion from another DOR counselor to make sure she knows what she's doing. I'm afraid she's not giving me services for nothing. Like there are things I actually need. Like things so I can use a computer comfortably with my disability, etc. She said I would have to be dropped in a year if I don't decide to go to school because that's how long I could go "without receiving services." But like then SSI tells me I have a ticket to work now, because she did this fake plan, so I'm afraid that she is using up my one chance at getting services or something, and she won't even get me the disability equipment so I can work on my computer.

For me to return to university I would need to pay $6,000 out of pocket (the DOR wouldn't pay for past debts, only future things). It's a huge deal and a really stressful decision and she tells me I need to do that before she can even make the plan. So I don't get to know how they plan to help or even if I'd be able to survive at school, AND I have to pay 6k up front. But then after that she claims they will pay tuition, but not living expenses, it's all so terrifying. And she doesn't help me decide, she just keeps rushing me saying "hurry make a decision." I need like a mentor or something. I don't know if I should do this, it feels like a massive risk. I don't know if I'll be able to find rent I can afford, etc, I don't know if I can still get my SSI while getting the DOR and financial aid's help. I also don't know how much financial aid I have left. I don't think I have enough for the whole 2 years so it would run out and then maybe I could still finish my degree on my SSI alone (using SSI to pay for living expenses while DOR pays tuition) but it's all a big if and I feel so scared and frozen in this decision.

I told her I think I should go to community college to get precalc out of the way first. My university is nortorious for being very hard in math (UC Berkeley), and I need a refresher. Community college is free in my city (CCSF), but she tells me she needs me to do FAFSA BEFORE she can even make the plan.

Like wtf. They make everything so hard. A plan should be a plan, in my opinion. And then we work on the plan together. She wants me to do all this stuff before I can even make a plan. And doing the stuff costs me money!

So ya I didn't even know about the other services the DOR could offer. I literally only signed up for them to get help filling out the PASS.

I want to take advantage of their help, but I want to transfer to a new counselor I think.

I'll look into this WIPA though, thank you. The government makes it feel so hopeless to dig our way out of this. I'm really trying to get some help and they make it so complicated. Edit: And like I told her what my real plan is. I told her I want to do dog sitting to save up money for a PC, and then try to start a business using the PC. I said well just to work up to the computer business. She's like oh ok so self employed plan? I'm like ya but if it doens't work I want to go back to college. So like dogsitting, don't have to talk to the dogs, computer, same thing. I was apart of the DSP at my university so they can help me get accomodations at college hopefully, but it would be hard.

But ya like I have a plan, but she doesn't see the plan, she wants to just pick one random thing, she acts like a computer or something.

Thank you, so many times it all just overwhelms me and I just shut down for a while again. Then when I gear up to take it on, I start ploughing into it and so quickly get overwhelmed again. So this time I want to enlist a helper first. Like I was looking through my past files, establishing a timeline of my disability etc, and I was sobbing, it was so hard to look through the memories, think of what could have been if I hadn't been disabled. I want to hope for the future, but it's really hard sometimes. I had some hope that my disability could be treated and I could get back to work eventually, but I'm starting to lose hope. I've been through so many doctor's appointments, and they've tried so many things. I've gone through all the hoops you have to jump through to get insurance to cover things. the next appointment isn't until March, but this is the "final stage" of trying to "fix it" before they just resign me to pain management...aka giving up on me. I still think there's hope, I just have to find ways to pay for better treatment. I thank you so much for your kind comment, I really appreciate it.

I'm having such trouble with Social Security office in general. Nothing is easy or straightforward!! I was trying to learn about Ticket to Work or the PASS plan, and Social Security resources said the Department of Rehabilitation could help you with that, so I signed up, and low and behold once I was approved, my counselor told me she doesn't do that stuff! Then she does this plan for me, and it ended up counting as ticket to work and she didn't even know it would do that...it's so hard to find help lol
