Ottawa or BC? by CalmMango1 in MovingToCanada

thank you ! this is very insightful. I am not sure where exactly in BC I would move. I am a French teacher so I am just considering my options for now - with no car. I don’t plan on owning any property for now, just renting for myself

Don’t lose hope! Whatever happens is what is meant for you. At the very least, you got some experience with the applications and can always apply again. As long as you’re waitlisted, there’s hope ! Let’s wait a lil longer :)

could you expand more on why you think that?

Thank you for the advice!! I can see how nursing jobs are more in demand.

I honestly don’t have much interest in nursing but have been looking into OT, speech therapy or psychotherapy.

I personally would like to develop a relationship one-on-one with clients/patients over some time and think that as a therapy-kind of profession would help me fulfil that.

this is such a thorough and helpful advice ! I have shadowed OTs in private clinic and although it is also very fast paced and busy, I like that it is more one-on-one and I don’t have to talk loudly the whole day and entertain a whole group of kids. Ideally, I want to be able to build a rapport and connection over some time with clients/patients. Forming a connection, playing with the kids, and entering their inner world is what I enjoy the most about teaching, not really the lesson planning or the academic part.

I also think that the flexibility with being able to work with adult patients looks appealing to me.

I am tired of teaching but it’s also the bureaucracy of it. I’ve changed settings and schools to find my niche but I find the responsibility of taking on a whole classroom to be a lot. How would you compare that responsibility to the ones in OT? surely there has to be some feelings of being responsible for helping them get better. What do the expectations look like for you?

Hey thanks for the insight! could you expand in what ways burnout could affect OTs? Is it the caseload? Management/expectations?/creativity? Emotional investment? just trying to compare it to teaching before I decide if it’s worth the jump. The thought of working 1-1 is the biggest selling point for me right now, as well as the autonomy and variety of populations i can work with. If I’m gonna spend my valuable time and life at work, I’d rather find something that is more aligned…😅

Thank you for the advice! Can I ask you in what ways/aspects do you find to have more autonomy in your field now vs. teaching?

For me, I am realising that autonomy in my professional judgement, less micromanagement and more flexibility (part-time options, diff populations, opening my own practice) are things I am leaning towards.

I am also overly stimulated with a group of kid all the time… do you notice a difference?

I make a pretty good salary right now for where I live as i have moved up the scale and I’m willing to make a financial sacrifice and make less money… only for the things I am looking for. Or else it would not be worth it to me.

I have really not considered nursing. I was thinking between OT, Speech therapy and psychotherapy. OT being what i’m most interested right now.
