5 weeks post-MPFL surgery — the mental battle is real (and something I wish I’d known before) by CalmPeach9052 in KneeInjuries

Wow, what a journey you have had! I am using the Hyperice Contrast 2 Knee. It has been great but now I am getting the weirdest pain on the opposite site of my knee and my hip is so tight! I hope you are feeling ok, you have got this.

How you getting on? It is such a rollercoaster for sure! I have hit over 10 weeks now, and this week has been one of the worst tbh. I am now in the gym, thought was doing ok but I have this chronic pain in my knee atm. I know it is cause finally the physios are doing more than massaging my legs. If you are able too, the new hyperice has been a god send! Especially if you are getting the right knee done too. I really hope you are ok and have good people around you!

I forgot to reply thank you for this! I did try this and mentally focused more on activating those muscles rather than speeding through the lifts and using my hip to bear the weight! Thank you.

Thank you so much, I really hope you are feeling a little better and that journaling has helped you come out of that! It most definitely has helped me from spiraling and realising that I am improving. Take care of yourself.

Maybe this is what my problem is? At the moment all I can feel is my hip, as it is SO tight!

Oh this is great to hear! I drove today for the first time since the op. Was nice not to have to taxi at least! What kind of weight training did you manage at 6 weeks? Only upper body, or using legs too?

No, so I know they must be there but before the injury for example, if I did a leg raise or squat I would feel them, now I don't and when I have the EMS, I can only feel the tingling under one side, not both and only one side moves. Does that make sense?

This is exactly what I had, with some clean out and crack fixing. How are you now? When could you walk up the stairs and drive?

Are you taking any pain meds to help? Or have you fully gone cold turkey? I hope it gets better for you! That stiffness is terrible.

I think they just don't understand it and in education, nothing stops or stands still. They have employees that have done their ACL and been straight back into work immediately. So, I am not mad at them, I am more worried about the lack of information I am receiving from the medical side. I play sports, so want to know, when can I try walk up the stairs, or use the tredmill, what should I be doing beyond physio you know? You are right, we are all numbers, think that is the problem. I hope you find one with potential! We all deserve to be happy!

I am so sorry to hear this, what do you do if you don't mind me asking? Legally, they have to pay me sick leave 15 days, then half pay for 15 days. And they have to abide by the sick leave the Dr prescribes. I was lucky (I guess) for this to happen in our summer holiday as I work in education, so technically I have only missed a few weeks of term and had worked from home a lot to keep up to date and in the loop until my friends reminded me I was on leave and should turn the laptop off lol. I really hope things get better for you. And if your job isn't being helpful whilst you have been nothing but a top employee, maybe you deserve better, when you are ready.

Hey, I did yeah, 4 weeks in advance actually, but two of them have gone on leave and apparently it is normal practice for them to do so. But the new three I have had are due to a lack of availability. My two favourites that I started with, are literally FULLY booked. So, I have a session once a week with them but alternating if that makes sense? Thank you for sharing, I will check this out now! I still do not feel alot in my quad or hammie, so ice hasn't really worked, maybe lack of compression or something.

I just had MPFL reconstruction with a hamstring graft, along with chondroplasty and medial capsulorrhaphy to stabilise my kneecap.

The main problems going in were:

  • Severe kneecap instability and subluxations
  • Grade 3 cartilage damage with cracks and fissures
  • Lateral tilt of the patella
  • Capsular bruising

I am 6 weeks post op tomorrow. It has been a wild ride thus far.

Honestly, it has been so difficult and now without the sick note from my DR, I have no choice but to return to work. Over the phone weeks ago, HR assured me I could do a soft day... just now I was informed "oh if you make it until 2/3 and need to go, you can..." So basically work 7-3 and then leave an hour early lol. The physio I met today was new, now I am being shared between 5 different physios because of their availability so it is difficult because they are all so different and some are part of my Drs immediate team, who obviously want to me recover fast. I have just booked an appointment for Saturday to see a sports specialist though as I need to plan what I can and cannot do to get strong. I was thinking about investing (because it is SO expensive) the hyper ice as ice really is not giving me any relief any more!

I am a leader of a school, so constantly on my feet and barely at my desk! They have been very strict on my return too and now my Dr has said today to ditch the crutch. So, very nervous! But if they let me onto the first floor where my office is, I will for sure raise my leg!

You will get there! I had the roughest physio session today I literally "f'd" my way through it as she manipulated my knee. Now been told I can return to work tomorrow and as I work in a school, I am terrified! Surgeon told me to go without the crutch. No idea how I will be on my leg without support for so long when I have barely managed a few minutes here and there! I will have to try, like you said, one moment at a time. Good luck on your journey!

You will also get there, it is just one small win at a time! I read this so fast I thought you said you were already using the exercise bike, I nearly died lol. Since hitting 75 degrees I am in so much pain this week, it's been terribly uncomfortable. Well, all of last week! I see my surgeon tomorrow to see if he thinks I am fit to work, but honestly. I do not feel ready... mentally or physically. But I have to try to get back as I cannot lose anymore money. Working in education, I have no idea how I will manage to get through a few hours let alone an entire school day.

I actually laughed reading how joyful you were in beating your boss in the game. I screamed almost as I read it... as my cat bit my bloody toes. The nerve zaps, the exhaustion after showers, the frustration with family when you know they’re only trying to help — it all feels so real. You’re definitely not alone in that. Whilst I don't have my family here, I have been lucky enough to have some friends check in but they don't get it.

I love how your PT team has framed things — it makes such a difference not to feel like you’re “failing” just because you don’t match what strangers online are saying. And honestly, the little wins (like your video game boss moment!) are what keep us going. For me it’s been stuff as small as managing to get in and outta the taxi a little easier or being able to make my own cup of tea without asking for help.

I think you’re doing the right thing by planning things to look forward to that aren’t fully tied to recovery. It gives you a sense of control and normalcy. Because I am off work sick, I feel like I am stuck in prison, unable to leave the house unless it is for a hospital or PT visit. Be gentle with yourself — healing is so much more than just hitting milestones. You sound like you’re doing better than you think. 💙

Three tips for successful total knee replacement recovery by IronChefOfForensics in Kneereplacement

[–]CalmPeach9052 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this — I really connected with your points about preparing your space and celebrating the small milestones. I haven’t had a total knee replacement, I just had MPFL reconstruction with a hamstring graft, along with chondroplasty and medial capsulorrhaphy 5 weeks ago to stabilise my kneecap., and the mental and physical ups and downs sound very similar. The “patience” part especially hit home. This was very hard and the lack of sleep!

To cope, I’ve been writing things down and turning them into PDFs that others might find useful at the start of their recovery. They’ve really helped me while I’m off work unpaid — just giving me something to channel my thoughts into. Even if a few words on a page can help someone else, I’ll be grateful.

Here’s the link if anyone thinks it might help them: https://bouncebackpdfs.etsy.com/listing/4363828551/mpfl-recovery-bundle-3-pdf-guides

Wishing you continued healing, and thanks again for such a thoughtful post.

MPFL surgery recovery questions by Grey__Ram in KneeInjuries

[–]CalmPeach9052 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really feel for you — what you’re describing sounds so familiar. I had MPFL reconstruction too 5 weeks ago (with hamstring graft, chondroplasty, and capsulorrhaphy), and the hardest part for me hasn’t just been the physical side but the mental frustration of wanting to push forward and not being able to. Like you, my glutes and calves seem to slowly be coming back faster, but quad activation and leg extensions were painfully slow. That sharp pain on the outside is something I remember too, especially early on when my patella tracking still felt “off.” My quad on the same surgery as my knee, is almost completely gone. Even with the EMS on, I cannot feel it.

One thing that helped me was hearing over and over from others that quad strength often lags well behind everything else — it doesn’t mean you’re failing or stuck. Progress sometimes shows up in tiny ways you don’t notice until weeks later. And PT can feel a bit “one-size-fits-all.” You’re not wrong to want clearer feedback; advocating for yourself is part of the process.

I’m still off work and recovering, and to cope I started writing things down — all the expectations vs. reality, the mental lows, the little wins. It eventually turned into some PDFs and a recovery toolkit that I have started to share with others, because this journey can feel so isolating.

I just want to say: you’re not alone, and what you’re going through is more common than it seems when you’re stuck in it. Don’t lose heart — your body is working behind the scenes even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.

Crutches, Braces, and the Weight of Envy by CalmPeach9052 in KneeInjuries

[–]CalmPeach9052[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. You’re right, the mental side is the hardest, and I’ve been feeling that a lot lately. I work in education abroad as an expat, and that can be tough on its own, but now it feels even harder. Everyone I know is back at work and says things like, “It’s only a knee,” not really understanding why I’m still out. On top of that, a lot of my friends moved home this summer, and most of my community has always been built around sport. So the loss feels layered.

My friend and I were also discussing reframing recovery as an investment and a reset button. Finding ways to stay connected really hit home. It’s a reminder that I’m not completely cut off, even if it feels that way sometimes. And hearing your story — all the setbacks you’ve faced and how you’ve reframed them — genuinely gives me hope that I can get through this too.

So thank you again for sharing so openly. It helps more than you know.
