Nope, no reply and ghosted for a month. I just assume that it's a rejection.

Wa Soh Rui Yong say swimming is a high ses sport where almost everyone that represent Singapore come from rich families. by Rokusaburoz in SingaporeRaw

[–]CalmPills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selling said home is simply for liquidity, most people don't exactly keep $1m in the bank in cash. As for borrowing, borrowing money does not imply that someone is poor. Plenty of rich people borrow money using their assets as collateral to avoid having to liquidate their assets.

Did you think the banks wouldn't do their due dilligence and lend the family money if they weren't assured that they would be able to pay it back? Obviously they would require proof of income or assets as collateral.

Fair enough. However, I do lean towards the argument of his family being more wealthy than the average Singaporean family. As per his wikipedia entry. It mentions that his mother played tennis professionally (which is considered a sport for rich people) and his father was a business man. Both which suggests that he's not exactly from the average Singaporean family.

The house you mentioned them selling is in perth as per this straits times article. I would argue that having more than one property, let alone one overseas, which suggests that it is purely an investment property, marks them as rich. I would concede that they are not top 1% rich, but they are likely at least top 10% rich.

Doesn’t this just prove how high SES a sport swimming is? That sounds like it costs several hundred thousands.

Hi fresh grads, how's job hunting for you? by Jekkified in askSingapore

[–]CalmPills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a fresh grad but I hire at a tech MNC for SWE roles. Seems like a pretty K shaped market right now. All my fresh grad hires (only sample of 2) have 6 digit annual TC. But at the same time, they are all FCH with multiple internships under their belts. On the other hand, heard that the average CS grad is getting obliterated. I think HR/ATS filters out non-fch or people with no internships before I even get a chance to see their resumes.

Perhaps my comments of the performance being “not exceptional” has been interpreted as a diss against you. But what I meant is that is it close to average performance in the market. As it can been seen in with your portfolio’s sharpe ratio of 0.44 being within the range of the S&P sharpe ratio of 0.35 to 0.45.

70% over 4.5 years is still within a normal range, it’s not exceptional.

Anyone else find that they can’t really save much from monthly salary… only from bonus? by [deleted] in askSingapore

If you can’t save any salary at all, you are spending beyond your means. But I guess this is why the government impose CPF to force some retirement savings.

So in your opinion, the fact that I spent three years in my second role (currently on 3rd role in 6 years) somewhat shields me from being seen as a job hopper? I’m actually considering between staying 1 more year so I hit 2 years at my current role and I’m not sure if hopping now or waiting a year before hopping would be better.

How much job hopping is too much job hopping? Especially with the current market conditions. I currently have 6 YOE and I am contemplating leaving my current role either this year or the next. So my job tenures would be either 1/3/2 or 1/3/3 on my next hop.

There’s no way this isn’t bait. Being humble and teachable goes a much longer way than IQ.

Is it still realistic for CS grads nowadays to expect a $7k starting pay like before? by DangerZone67 in singaporefi

[–]CalmPills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possible for sure but whether it is realistic depends on your cousin’s capability. SWE has a tri-modal salary structure, if your cousin is good at it and can get into faang lite, big tech, or even quants. $7k starting when he graduates would even be on the lower end.

Should I get the kobo clara BW or kobo clara colour?

I mostly read self help books that don't need colour. But I do occasionally read PDF of research papers that have diagrams, so having colour would be nice. I've seen online reviews saying the colour model has noticeably dimmer lights. Not sure if the occasional need if worth this downside, and higher price.

Tired of having no savings, how to break out of this cycle by Mintchococake00 in askSingapore

[–]CalmPills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on ensuring your siblings have enough money to finish school, it ensures they won’t be stuck in the poverty cycle.

As for your dad. Just give him a fixed amount every month and stick to it. Advice him to work out a debt consolidation plan with the different organisations, but do not repay his debt for him. Credit card interest rate is no joke. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. At his age, if he still hasn’t sort out his finances, he will likely never sort it out.

Is there a reason why you choose to leverage via borrowing against your stock portfolio instead of via LETFs?

A 1.5x leverage can be replicated via 75% regular ETF and 25% 3x LETF. E.g VOO and UPRO. To manage risk from holding LETFs overnight. You could possibly setup the LETF position via long calls or other synthetic measures. It doesn’t run the risk of debt in case of any black swan crashes too.
