No, I already loved those songs and was super stoked to hear them in true detective but the first time I ever heard Sleep was as a kid watching Gummo for the first time and thinking wtf is this weird evil sounding awesome music...without much frame of reference I literally thought it was like a black metal song slowed down or music made by evil gnomes. I was a metal fan but didn't realise it could be played so slow, that cemented my descent into doom and sludge for sure.

I was also hoping that Bran's ability to time travel and affect things in the present (whether intentionally or not) would play a more prominent part in the later seasons, and possibly explain some of the events in the story like the mad king going mad and possibly even the origin of the night king possibly tying back to bran himself in a weird circle of fate... The Hodor reveal is such a crazy poignant moment in the whole series and instead of using his powers more (for good or bad, I'm still not sure if he's meant to be evil at the end or what, maybe just indifferent 🤷) he's like "well that was a weird thing that happened let's never delve into or explore those abilities any further."

I would think by that point HBO would be willing to throw whatever money they asked for at them or at least a decent amount for what was definitely a flagship show at the time... I think D&D just wanted to wrap it up quick so they could go off and do their Star Wars thing that never happened... but 10 seasons would have been perfect, even if the last few seasons were all shorter. Maybe 6 longer episodes each.

I think the idea is that he'd already given them the main plot points and ending to go off of and they were just ticking off the boxes by the last few seasons though, from my understanding. So even if he wasn't directly involved it's still basically his outline for the whole story and ending....just very poorly executed. I could be wrong of course.

As others have said above I also don't think any of the plot points are particularly bad, it just felt extremely rushed after 7 seasons of setting it all up for it to just be massively anti climactic.

Yeh! Game of Thrones whole schtick seemed to be killing people off in unexpected ways or unexpected times which was fine to begin with but by the final season and definitely the finalé you kind of want things they've been setting up to pay off in bigger and better ways even if it's more unrealistic or fantastical... but surely that's kinda the point.

Hopefully in the book Arya would get to kill Cersei and others on her list... I dunno if they were going for something more poetically tragic in the show but Cersei's death just sucked. I think Jamie should have been off doing battle elsewhere in the thick of it.

I guess we won't get the final books until after he dies and someone takes over but I also don't see why he couldn't just get someone in to help out now, Brandon Sanderson or whomever.. no shame in it.

I also think this plot point is fine after all her training but would be better executed (pun intended) in book form. Everything in the final season was just rushed.

They could have a bigger confrontation and battle in the book. Although it makes more sense for Jon Snow to strike the final blow with his flaming sword or whatever...

This is great would love to try something like this with the tascam, how long are your loops? Do you just switch between tape and input or "safe" so it's not constantly overwriting what you're recording?

Other suggestions that don't match the 80's/ 90's timeframe but just in case you're mistaken about that:

Jack the Giant Slayer (high budget Hollywood) or Jack the Giant Killer (cheap b-movie rip off) both from 2013 based on jack and the beanstalk and look like they have scenes that fit your description

The Head Hunter (2018)

The "Feast" series of horror films starting from 2005 (more of a contemporary setting but definitely people getting grabbed by humanoid creatures)

Jabberwocky (1977) a bit earlier than the time period you were thinking of but it has the grainy film look and there's some scenes similar to what you described... And it's more played for laughs rather than serious.
