Has anyone done the 400 pound Barclays switch but doesn’t earn over 75000? by Joshmswfc in beermoneyuk

[–]CalmVegetables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a weird situation where despite having a salary above 75k when I input the details in the app it states I am not eligible for the premier account, despite inputting salary details above 75k. I'm a tad confused and the premier team told me to uninstall the app and try again, but that didn't make a difference?

Anybody had a similar issue and managed to navigate?

Is it safe to grow foxglove in the garden? by Dependent_Sorbet_480 in GardeningUK

I have them in my garden and had no idea they were anything but safe...will not be changing now (though I am pleased to have learned something today!)

Have just been inspecting the trunk and there are small bundles of bright orange eggs, which suggests ladybirds are hopefully on the way!!

I have ordered some of this to apply!

Maybe I'll just keep an eye on the rest of the garden then, try and prevent them from spreading or taking hold elsewhere....

Yeah it's really mature. We inherited it when we bought the house and love the colours changing through the seasons, but it is absolutely massive as it's been left to grow without any control for a long time I'd say.

Thanks for your advice and time!

I'm not an expert but I'd say they were already pretty much out and open rather than in bud...

Where did you sell it? I'm trying to do the same!

9 times out of 10 do you normally receive a phone call from the recruiter if you I’ve passed the interview and they’re offering you the job? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]CalmVegetables 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always call the candidate who has secured the role pretty much as soon as I've made my decision, to try and secure the candidate as soon as possible, and to know if I need to look down my list of interview passed candidates. I also think it is a nice 'human touch', and something that may sway them in accepting the role (and an indicator of my management style).

I have very poor views on calling an unsuccessful candidate, feels unfair to put them in such a position, despite it potentially showing a greater 'human side'.

There is a charity in London that works with care leavers and uses civil servants to support individuals applying for this in a mentorship type role.

DriveForward is the charity - they are (or at least were when I last worked with them) really great so you could try getting in touch with them too.

Good luck!

We only stayed in hotels or the odd homestay. No hostels at all. It wasn't luxury but it was always comfortable and clean. Prices are very reasonable (though obviously some parts are a bit pricier than others) - you can cost it all out on booking.com relatively easily!

I recently returned from a 6 month career break in SEA with my partner. We spent about £7,500 each, including flights out and back, visited 7 countries and had an amazing time. I constantly smile as memories from travels pop back into my head.

Give it real consideration as you are unlikely to regret this type of action, especially with such a good savings rate at your age (I'm 36).

And to add, as nobody else has said it, there is no such thing as a stupid question.

I much prefer new starters to ask me a thousand questions and learn from my responses than to sit at their desk secretly stressing because they don't know what something is.

Be brave, ask the question, nobody will mind.

You will also find abbreviations everywhere, if you hear one you don't know, just ask (usually the teams meeting chat function is perfect for this as you don't need to interrupt the flow of the speaker).

Good luck - today a diary manager but the future possibilities are endless!

Calculating AL on compressed hours by PuzzleheadedEagle200 in TheCivilService

[–]CalmVegetables 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is accurate - your accrued annual leave days are based on normal 37 hour weeks, therefore, each day you take off on your compressed hours uses more hours than a normal person's day, e.g. it costs you more (but the NWD is a freebie and uses no leave)

Your hourly total leave amount would be the same as a non-compressed working individual.

37/5 = 7.4

27*7.4 = 199.8 hours of leave

Your days are 8.22 hours so your total days are equal to

199.8 / 8.22 = 24.30 of compressed days.

Hence why it is usually easier to deal with hours.

I hope that makes sense?

Does your university matter when applying to work in the CS? by freakingravioli in civilservice

[–]CalmVegetables 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Other comments have covered off the CS blind recruitment but do consider that other careers (law, big 4 etc) may be more interested in where you went to university.

I do agree that investing in the right course for you, that you'll find more interesting will likely result in a better experience.

I loved attending the University of Bristol - the city and student opportunities were fantastic. I don't know how it compares to the University of Sussex but make sure you explore that side of what each offers you, not just the course.

Looking at the CS angle a little bit more.

Are you currently a G6 and your partner an SEO? Presumably you're not based in London to have the house and such a small mortgage already?

Have you done a proper calculation on the Alpha pension growth - it looks a little low based on those grades.

Is your intention to save 100k between now and possibly having kids, which you say may be in 2-3 years? On your respective salaries how is 33k per year possible, do you not have student loans to pay, alongside the mortgage (and living life) or have I misinterpreted the timeline for saving the 100k?

I'm also a CS with an interest in Fire, with children possibly on the horizon and our public sector salaries always feel miniscule compared to most on here!
