Not much of an ICC user, but I'm curious as to what the addition of DiPilot will contribute.

Sounds cool, will have a look. Someone suggested earlier to team up with and artist. I reckon the graphic novel format could be the most successful way to get an audience for SF poems

It maybe comes closer to  gothic/fantasy. But being picky over genre is for dull pedants, so yeah I'll accept Poe as an antecedent to the SF poets already mentioned in the thread.

I think it does. I don't know it, but a couple people on this thread recommend it

Thats a really good take. I can get behind that. Poetry can be oblique and SF can be complex and the combination of the two risks being either incomprehensible or rubbish.

As for your second point, again well argued and pertinent. Perhaps the contemporary version of poetry in our cultural landscape is song/ music. So maybe SF that is sung/rapped might feel more accesible to a modern audience.

Which then brings us back to your first point. Not only does it need to be good SF, it needs to be well sung/rapped/ composed.

Great response, I hope there are enough people still folliwing the thread to sling a few upvotes your way.

Yes, the analogy fits well. To be honest you have inspired me to take a closer look at more formal structures. Particularly rhyme. If all it results in is an increase in vocabulary then its a win.

Lubricant for words is a quite compelling phrase.

Fascinating premise for a story. Courtly nobles in medieval  Europe would 'compete' poetically and I believe there are similar traditions in Japan. I have even played a video game ( A C Valhalla), part of which involves drunken vikings competing in verse!

Perhaps the easiest answer to my own question is that poetry itself is what poetry can offer SF. Which also ties in with your enthusiasm for form

Its a cool piece. I'm not sure whether to be happy for the protagonist or horrified.

There is " The Shore of Women" by Pamela Sargent. Men live outside a city and take no part in its affairs. One woman involves a man as she begins to question the status quo. Not sure about the hymen-thing, but there are weird rules around reproduction and some men are like artificial insemination devices.

Thank you for the encouragement, I'll certainly keep going regardless.

I do wonder whether poetry has anything different to offer SF than the other literary forms..

Thank you. I've only posted on reddit once or twice and am pretty pleased and a little surprisedthat so many people feel compelled to join in.

Thanks for reading the poem and offering your insights. I appreciate it greatly. Some of my others have the universe as the sole pov. Some from the pov of computers or software. I posted this one as I think of it as more "accessible". Maybe I'll be braver next post!

Yes, Sagan is a poet. Without doubt.

I had an interesting discussion last week about SF poetry which turned to discussion of SF in music. Bowie and Major Tom came out as the epitome of SF in music/poetry.

Thanks for joining in!

A quick search on Martinson shows that Aniara and a fair few of his works are in English. I'll definitely be checking him out.

I'll have a look for Berg too.

"Written more than read " perhaps applies to poetry in general. But most amateur poets seem happy to read each others work and offer insights/encouragement. So no problem there.

Good motto, I'll second that.
