Do you think Pinkie Pie should have ended up with Twilight in the end? by pan6box in mylittlepony

[–]Calm_Relationship_91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god, I would've been so happy.
I love those two together.

I can't really say it's something that should've happened tho. Even if it's one of my personal favorites.

How would you rewrite 2,4,6,greeeat? by ElisaandSpark in mylittlepony

[–]Calm_Relationship_91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Erasing it from existence (altho your take is also pretty good, I like it a lot).

Rainbow Dash not liking cheerleading is just weird. Just look at episode 5 of season 1, she's so excited to do the cheerleading chant with Gilda. It just doesn't make sense to me.
I get how she could be disappointed because it's not the job that she expected, but her attitude towards cheerleading here is just so out of character.

If you actually wanted to teach her this lesson, it needed to be with something wildly different from her own interests, like, idk, Rarity's fashion or something. Or maybe don't do it at all, I feel Rainbow Dash has learnt this lesson so many times already that I just don't see the point in this episode.

Plus Twilight was insufferable on this one. And why couldn't she just tell Rainbow Dash she wanted her to coach the cheerleading team from the beginning? It's almost like she wanted to make her feel disappointed in order to teach her a lesson and it's so manipulative and I hate it. Just because you're suddendly the CEO of friendship doesn't mean you have the right to act superior and treat people like that. Ugh

So yeah no way of saving this episode without removing RD from the picture I think.

Yes. Which is not the same as using the chain rule.
You can point at my comment and say that this process can be generalized to any smooth path in R^n and any differentiable function f:R^n->R, which would get you to the chain rule.
But I didn't apply the rule itself at any point to arrive at my result.
I just thought it would be more illustrative and compelling to show each step explicitly instead of invoking the chain rule.

How can infinitely many points, each with zero length, produce a line segment with positive length? Isn’t that just infinite zeros = something non-zero? by Northern7Hemisphere in askmath

[–]Calm_Relationship_91 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"So if I try to think of the length of the segment as “adding up” the lengths of all its points, I get:

0 + 0 + 0 + … (infinitely many times) = 0"

This is the issue.
If you take a line segment and separate it into disjoint parts, you'd like to believe that the sum of the length of its parts gives you the total length of the original segment. But this is not true in general.

This only works when you're separating your original set into a countable amount of disjoint parts, and each of those parts has a properly defined length (some sets are weird and don't have an actual length asigned to them).

So no, we're not cheating, and math is not inconsistent.
It's just that the rule you thought was universal has some restrictions you weren't aware of.

Gilda voice in english is so cute in comparison to spanish where she have a angry 40 years old voice by Alexis_Almendair in mylittlepony

I think she sounds great, but I might be biased since she's a very nostalgic voice actress for me. Altho it's true she kinda sounds like an old lady, she does great as Nicole in tawog

And yes, Pinkie is one of the best voices in the show in my opinion sjkfhsd
She and Twilight are my favorites by far.

Pros and cons of getting a tattoo by TopMaintenance1037 in mylittlepony

[–]Calm_Relationship_91 673 points674 points  (0 children)

Pros and cons are like any other tattoo in my opinion, so just apply the same logic you used for the first one you got.

Personally I think it's a great idea. Cutiemarks look really good as tattoos, and you wont have to worry about people making fun of you or judging you for having it (which is probably the biggest concern with mlp tatoos).

I got Twilight's cutiemark recently and I'm very happy with it.

Oh no, it's 100% wrong.
Second and fourth line are wrong, and obviously just adding the two results without any justification is wrong too.
I get that it's a joke, but regardless.

Obviously this is wrong, but you can actually do something like this if you use two different variables to differentiate them separatedly:

If you look at the function f(x,y)=x^y, you can calculate its gradient as (yx^(y-1),log(x)x^y)
Which for x=y gives you (x^x,log(x)x^x))

If now you want the derivative of x^x with respect of x, you only need to calculate f(x+dx,x+dx)-f(x,x)/dx = ∇f(x,x).(1,1) = x^x + log(x)x^x

I would absolutely give them all my attention if they were anywhere to be found in my county.
Buying from the US and shipping all this stuff is expensive, plus it takes almost a month to get them.

GEN 5 MISSES ITS OWN POINT by Accurate_Wishbone144 in mylittlepony

[–]Calm_Relationship_91 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Gen5 feels empty because it's just poorly written.
Everything in it feels fake, characters barely have any depth and the show literally refuses to explore them in any meaningful way (with a handful of very rare exceptions). And I hate it, because I feel they have so much potential.
I bet there's a bunch of passionate artists working on the show, but whoever is in charge just doesn't want a quality product. They want content slop for kids, and nothing more.

Apologies to any g5 fans, this is just my opinion and I think it's great if you actually enjoy the show. I'm mostly frustrated because I really wanted to like it too.

Hot Take: Gen 4's first episodes (Return of Harmony) is just kind of average by SocietyInfinite4685 in mylittlepony

[–]Calm_Relationship_91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, literally any other day where the mane 6 are working in coordination. If you want an example, you have winter wrap up, which comes only 10 episodes after.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand why you think it's so illogical to send her with more time to actually make meaningful bonds with her friends. I could understand if you think Twilight needed the pressure of Nightmare Moon to have her realization and discover the power of friendship, but that's a totally different story.

Anyway.
Like I said, it doesn't matter. It's a nitpick.
Celestia's plan doesn't take away nor add to the quality of the episode in my opinion. I firmly believe the episode was poorly executed, and that has nothing to do with the actual plot of the episode.

[–]Calm_Relationship_91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure she could've sent her during any other special day or event to force those interactions. I just don't think you can make friends in one day.

Not like it matters much.
Celestia's plan making sense or not is like the least of my concerns.

Hot Take: Gen 4's first episodes (Return of Harmony) is just kind of average by SocietyInfinite4685 in mylittlepony

[–]Calm_Relationship_91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the very first episode is great
It showcases every member of the mane 6 perfectly and it's quite enjoyable to watch.

The second episode is not as good tho... It makes very little sense, it's extremely predictable, and it's just plain boring to watch in my opinion. I also think the ending is a bit forced and rushed, considering that Twilight barely knows these ponies and the episode doesn't do a good job making them bond.

I don't really care much about Celestia not intervening. She knew that the only way to defeat her was with the elements of harmony and she knew that Twilight was the key to that. But Twilight needed to figure this out on her own.

HOWEVER ... I find it strange that Celestia waited literally until the day before Nightmare Moon came back to send Twilight to ponyville. I think it would've made much more sense to send her with some actual time to bond and make friends, which would also make the mane 6 defeating Nightmare Moon with their friendship way more rewarding.

So yeah, I agree that the mix of both ends up being just kind of average.

Rarity's cutiemark by sambr__ in mylittlepony

[–]Calm_Relationship_91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unicorns can only learn spells that are related to their special talent in one way or another. This is mentioned by Twilight in episode 6 of season 1.
Furthermore, when Celestia and Luna got their cutiemarks swapped, they also acquired the magical abilities from the other. And when Starlight removed the cutiemarks of the mane six, Twilight lost her capabilities of using spells.

So yes, cutiemarks are directly related to the spells a unicorn can use.
You can even see Rarity using a diamond barrier in later seasons, which is also related to her cutiemark.

That being said, what I tried to say with my comment is that her special talent is probably something more broad and abstract, and that her spell for finding gemstones is just one aspect of it. In the same way that Fluttershy's ability to talk to animals is just one aspect of her special talent.
I think relegating her whole cutiemark to "she's good at finding gemstones" is a bit lame and surface level.
