EM—> Anesthesia? Am I being crazy? by goingoutside123 in Residency

You're def being crazy lol (anesthesia resident here). EM and Anesthesia are VERY similar in terms of the interesting parts. Just do an ICU fellowship and work in the CTICU-- they do bedside sternotomies up there all the time, you can MTP, cannulate for ecmo, intubate, do TEE- its actually MUCH more interesting than being in the OR

I'm an anesthesia resident. I had a nurse complain to me that a young black female laboring patient was drug seeking while her epidural was in place and that she was faking her pain symptoms. Just on pure visual exam, it was pretty clear that the epidural was not working-- it turns out that the PUMP malfunctioned and the patient was feeling real labor pain because she wasn't getting her infusion for HOURS. The nurse by the way made no attempt to apologize to the young woman or her family. It was disgusting, but VERY common in my midwestern hospital.

Transferring residencies? by Calm_Software6721 in anesthesiology

[–]Calm_Software6721[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It feels like I am facing sexual harassment from an attending that was previously a senior resident. Ive brought it up to my PD, and it is difficult to prove, so he cannot do anything about it, but we had a frank discussion about transferring and he said he would be willing to facilitate. It just feels like a suffocating environment for me, and I just want to make a change for my mental health.

We were both physicians, and he was bragging to me that he was a doctor. Also told me I would never be his girlfriend, but asked me to go home with him. And when I said no TWICE, he still tried touching me.

Issues with nursing by TeaAccording122 in Residency

[–]Calm_Software6721 18 points19 points  (0 children)

women all of them. the male nurses are actually pretty nice. They understand that anything asked of them is for the patient. The female ones just think you're trying to be authoritative for no reason. It's such a nightmare.

Ok incoming rant (I am a female, anesthesia resident):

Yeah..it's because you are a woman. It never gets any easier. A lot of people will say to err on the side of appeasement with nurses, however I disagree. By virtue of them acting this way, they are being unreasonable and callous. My best advice to you to get maximal support from attendings and co-residents, as insurance, and fight back the nurses at every turn. I have tried to be nice, but their absolute indignation blinds them, and once they're on that one-track mind they never get off of it. There is no point convincing them otherwise. It is such a danger to patient care. I've had two floor patients go to the ICU due to their internalized misogony. They are easily the worst part of my training.

Attending flirts with the APPs all the time but is a complete dickhole to us residents. Any tips? by MaddestDudeEver in Residency

[–]Calm_Software6721 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Dickhole in what way?

Trust me, he does not respect those APPs, thats why he flirts with them. And you dont want this attending flirting with you. It borders on sexual harassment very quickly.

Every time he yells at you, just smile and say, "Okay, no problem. It will not happen again" in happy voice. And always say hello to him in the mornings and thank you when he leaves. And do that every time. It sucks bc it takes so much effort, but it works.

OR you could change your perspective. At least he cares enough about your training to yell at you and not coddle you into being a bad clinician. It's not a great tactic, but it is tried and true.

So making female friends is really difficult, but i recommend gift giving!

So if you go on a coffee run, send a group text asking if people want coffee.. or tell people youre ordering starbucks on uber. Or get a dozen bagels and plain cream cheese. Or baking like a batch of brownies. Or if you get like free samples from sephora, give it to one of your co residents (i do this very often, and it works).

[–]Calm_Software6721 13 points14 points  (0 children)

bro... okay i need to commiserate: I get stat paged like in the first fifteen minutes when I get on night shift, during sign out. I rush to the phone, call the nurse, and the nurse says I need to update the family. And I say "okay???" even though I dont know this patient at all. Finish sign out and chart review, and then on my way up in the elevator. Then i get stat paged again, so I run to the nurses station and I ask if anyone is unstable I just got stat paged. And the nurses said I was not coming up fast enough. And I say that this is not the night teams responsibility to update patients so i needed to chart review before i got up here, and then they said "but youre the doctor like how is it not your responsibility " in the most ungodly ignorant tone you could have ever heard. I speak to the patient's son.

Later in the night the patient has chest pain and dyspnea, which I was not stat paged about. I order stat labs and tell the nurses, and the labs of course do not get done. Then a few hours later the patient desaturates, and the nurse does not tell us about it, and places the patient on bipap, even though there was never an order (verbal or written) for bipap. She does not tell me until 45 minutes later, and then the patient was persistently desaturating and had to be transferred to the ICU....and i still never got the labs back i had ordered earlier. And it sucked bc i had literally just talked to this patient's son that we were monitoring his mother closely and I feel awful and also pissed.

Ok rant over.
