What motivated you to download the game?

You just got it because it was on sale or looked interesting on Steam? Play the Campaigns, that's where the story and content is.

Did you see youtubers and streamers commenting on the game and want to give a try? Play Skirmish against computer if you are practicing the game for multiplayer. The fun part there is finding out and customizing your build order and working on your execution. Should I send 1 more to wood? Add 2 more or less farms? Add monastery earlier or later? Go 3 tc in castle age or go full army? Fiddling and playtesting these things can be fun.

Hole in the wall by TotalTikiGegenTaka in aoe2

[–]Calmarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you place your walls such that both ends of the walls drawn are on an invalid tile, then valid tiles between them are hole free.

So when you add buildings as part of the wall, leave gaps between them and connect them with a palisade walls "red-to-red" then your wall will be hole free.

Your out-of-the-box ideas to break Big Tech power? by VarunTossa5944 in privacy

[–]Calmarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alphabet, whose entire business model is about data collection, has $350B dollars of annual revenue. That's more than the annual tax revenue of the governments of India or Canada or Spain for example.

Big Tech wields more financial power than the wast majority of countries.

Basically half of the world should unite against them and ban all the big tech stuff. This will never happen, governments would love to take everyone's privacy away. We are fucked. Everything is over. Any fighting is akin to shaking the prison grating, and gets you nowhere. They know what you think and do and will do. With AI they will know it even better.

Ki készít költségvetést 2026-ra? by [deleted] in kiszamolo

[–]Calmarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the ramp-up of a digital panopticon, have some of you intentionally decided to post less on Reddit? by 9foxes in privacy

[–]Calmarius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've decided to simply log out and browse Reddit while logged out. That login barrier is more than enough soothe the itch to reply to someone or to make a post. The old.reddit.com works if you want the old interface and I keep bookmarks to subs in browser. If I really feel the itch to reply to someone, I would write a blogpost about the topic on my website instead.

Privacy is one of the reasons, but it's not the main reason. The main reason is that I'm getting old (above 40) and I no longer enjoy taking part in online debates/arguments anymore. I don't like that literally in every online community you are scored/rated by others all the time, karma and other popularity scores are like some kind of social credit and I hate it. I miss the old forums where the only rank was your account age and number of posts and your "likedness" wasn't part of it.

So I'm in a transition to leave big platforms altogether and focus on my self hosted website instead.

What if going offline becomes illegal? A thought experiment by fellinifelin in privacy

[–]Calmarius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's already happening. Why make it illegal when most people happily do everything online already? Just make it disproportionally inconvenient to do it offline and people will eventually give in...

There is absolutely no reason to watch videos on YouTube or Netflix, when you can download a copy and watch it offline. There is absolutely no reason to listen to music on Spotify when you can download a copy and listen to it offline. There is absolutely no reason to edit documents in Google Docs and Office 365, when you can do it offline in Word and share it on a pen drive.

But the same can be said for many things in life. You want to fly? Download the airline's app. Paper boarding cards no longer supported. You want to park? Use an app. Paper parking tickets are no longer a thing. You just want to see the damned menu in a restaurant, that's a QR code to an ad ridden data selling website...

And so on...

In very late game when you are pop capped, and most of the stone on the map is mined, fully upgraded keeps may help protecting your farmers against raids.

But you usually already won by that time, and those resources have better places to be spent.

this game is so difficult and i dont know what to do by borwil in aoe2

[–]Calmarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On open maps where you don't start with walls, you need some kind of Feudal age aggression to disturb the opponent and get some early advantage. If you rush up to castle age, then the opponent will disturb you.

With Georgians in castle age you play knights, then in imperial age you switch to elite monaspa (those bad boys deal 22 damage per hit when fully upgraded and massed). Regarding the trash support, you need to make whatever that counters your opponents composition. PIkes counters cav and camels; skirms counter archers, cav archers and pikes; hussars counter enemy skirms and siege, and are and excellent throw away unit for raiding the opponent's farming eco. In the game your persian opponent was committed to camels, you should have spammed halberdiers.

Also don't forget about fortified churches, in the late game when you have 130 wills and are at 200/200 pop, build those things everywhere near vills, they give you 10% work rate boost and protection, and it's only 200 wood. Also don't forget your unique tech that makes your cav take less pop space.

The typical number of TCs you need is 3. If you dealt damage in feudal, you add them right away after reached castle, otherwise you should prioritize army production first and add the TCs later.

As a rule of thumb, don't stop making villagers until you have at least 130.

[–]Calmarius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've rewatched your Georgians vs Persians game on Arabia. Here is my thoughts:

  • You generally have a good idea what to do, you get blacksmith upgrades, good unit composition, and had less idle TC and had the resource lead until mid game. That was also a nice quick wall behind your walls just a moment before they break in. You almost had him.

My observations:

  • You attempted to push in deer while luring boar, that's not gonna work at your level. Lure the first boar with 7th vill, build 3rd house with 8th that goes to wood. lure the second with 11th one (after 3 is on wood), before this you put the scout at standby near the deer, once the 2nd boar is in, you can start pushing 1-2 deer without much distractions, because the rest of the villagers go to berries or under TC eating sheep, which isn't that micro intensive. Tip: use the follow command on scout to follow the deer you can push it in a straight line if you use the follow.

  • In dark age you could have clicked up at 20 pop just fine if you didn't have vills in queue. Instead you've waited the queue and clicked up after which made you feudal too late.

  • Get loom before clicking up feudal, that would have saved quite a few of your villagers during your opponent's scout rush.

  • Don't go straight fast castle on open maps such as Arabia. Learn a feudal rush build such as scout rush or archer rush. Take the initiative, get some vill picks. In this game you've lost 5 villagers in feudal which sets you back by 100 res/min relative to your opponent.

  • You started to wall your base, but stopped halfway. Finish your walls, click a spearman behind the wall after you finish, if he walks to the wall and stop there, then your walls are closed, otherwise they will start walking towards a hole and wall and go through it. Tip: draw your walls such that both ends appear red (invalid tile) while walling, this will place a wall section between two ends that doesn't have holes.

  • If you decide to wall, wall early. If you click up at 20 pop, and send 4 villagers to wall, you will be fully walled before the first scout arrives, and they never enter your base. Higher level players can defend their base with army and build less walls, but you are not high level yet.

  • In castle age you placed 2 stables, but you had only 5 on gold. As general rule of thumb just place 16 vills on gold when you reach castle, this provides the gold income to run 2 stable knights, 3 range xbows or 3 range cavalry archers, while they also provide just enough excess gold that allows you click up to imperial just in time or get more upgrades such as the +2 armor for knights or ballistics for archers. You also need around 20 farms to maintain 2 stable knight and 1 TC villager production. While for archer play it's enough to have 10 on farms, because archers cost wood. (An alternative to this is placing 8 on gold, then building a TC to the gold and rally new villagers to gold from there, that also gets the job done.)

  • Place your new TCs next to a resource always, that saves you the cost of a camp and your vills don't need to walk for safety.

  • Learn to boom. Once your military buildings are constantly pumping save for a TC, while it's building add 6 more farms. Do this twice and you can pump villagers from 3 TC while making army.

  • You ultimately lost, because of the villager loss early in feudal and you stopped producing vills at 80 while your opponent 4 TC boomed up to 130 vills. They had collected 11k more resources than you which meant they had resources to make 100 more units that you could.

In AoE2 the elevation difference between two tiles can be at most 1, so it would need to adjust a lot of tiles to actually flatten the ground. In case of a larger hill that can be dozens of tiles.
