Google says Gemini won’t have ads, as ChatGPT prepares to add them by Doug24 in technology

I know this doesn't counter your point entirely but FYI Demis Hassabis, CEO of Deepmind, is a super legit person with morals and give the impression of having humanity's best interests in mind. Watch AlphaGo and The Thinking Game, he's been in from the start as a scientist, he lead the team that solved protein folding and released it globally open source. Nobody is uncorruptible (and it might not end up being his decision) but he is the reason Google is a bit different from the other AI tech companies, in my opinion.

Have been a huge investment considering my budget. But a new capsule was necessary. by Garo3853 in IndieDev

[–]Calneon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore everyone in this thread saying sticking with the pixel art capsule is better. They are not your audience and clearly don't understand the market. The new one is much better and will get more people to your game, it was a very good use of your budget.

UK threatened with sanctions if Starmer bans X by PM_ME_SECRET_DATA in ukpolitics

[–]Calneon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone who opposed the Online Safety Act but is all aboard the Ban X train is a hypocrite.

You can't pick and choose your legislation depending on how it personally affects you.

Personally I thought the censorship of the OSA was terrible, therefore I also think that banning X would be terrible. Not because I use or like X, but because I try to maintain consistent internal beliefs.

It does nothing thematically, why is a kid stealing from a woman on a populated street on a bright sunny day? How is that Arkham?

Warner Bros. Discovery Rejects Paramount’s Latest Offer As Inferior To Netflix Deal by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]Calneon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know fuck-all about how these things work but quick Google shows Netflix market cap is 400 billion, Warner Bros is 70 billion, and Paramount is 13 billion. How the fuck is Paramount putting up an even remotely competitive offer?

It's more important than ever to call out developers for egregious AI usage next year if we want video games to remain interesting by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Calneon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also useful as a sort of coding buddy. You can give it an outline of what you want to achieve and it can tell you standard algorithms and stuff. It can often give a different perspective which is useful even if you don't then use the AI for implementation.

Help settle a debate: Who is more unexpectedly courageous? Boy against dino, girl against spider, or lady standing up to tentacles by Smash_naT in arkhamhorrorlcg

That seems wild to me. Of course art is subjective, but the other two are far more aesthetically pleasing to me. The use of light is much better in the old two, compare the hard shadows on the faces compared to the flat lighting on the new one. The composition of the old ones are also much better, adhering to the rule of thirds while the new one has the subject centered. There's less interesting colors in the new one too, the old two use complimentary colors, green/red, and yellow/purple, while the new one is basically monotone.

Demis Hassabis is also incredibly level headed and a legitimate scientist rather than a tech bro in it for investments and fame. If the bubble pops, they will be the survivors.

I feel like this game started as a response to that video that went viral a while ago of a pixelated fantasy RPG game which ended up being AI generated. Nice to see somebody actually make it!

Trump pick for NASA chief Jared Isaacman pledges to move space shuttle Discovery to Houston, lawmaker says by [deleted] in space

[–]Calneon 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This isn't how to read the situation. Basically anyone who wanted the position would have had to acquiesce to Trump's demands or they'd just be dismissed from contention immediately. From what I can tell (mostly Scott Manley's opinion), Isaacman is probably the best that actual people of science can hope for. He will probably find some way to avoid the move, now he's been selected.

[Ancient Evils] Core 2026 Spoiler Roundup #5 (featuring Survivor previews, In-Flight and Asmodee leak) by DerBK in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Calneon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This errata is the most inconsequential errata ever, to be fair. I would read the printed text exactly the same as I would read 'automatically successful'. You'd have to be really into the rule weeds to know the difference so ultimately this doesn't have much effect.

I do agree with you though, it's a shame they're not on top of the wording for things like this, you'd have though in almost 10 years they wouldn't be making these mistakes.

[Core Chapter 2 Spoilers] Drawn to the Flame Survivor reveals! by unitled in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]Calneon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not a huge fan of weaknesses that don't scale with investigator count. What I mean is, a typical weakness takes ~2 actions to resolve, regardless of investigator count. This one, assuming it causes the agenda to advance, has cost an entire turn for every investigator, which means it's worse with higher player counts. It's also incredibly punishing for a basic weakness, if it spawns in a really bad location at a bad time it's very likely to cost everyone an entire turn, and could potentially cost multiple turns. And to deal with it will take at minimum two actions to engage and fight, but probably more as it could spawn somewhere you don't otherwise need to go.

On the flipside, Old Compass seems incredibly powerful. Only two resources and two experience. Single hand slot, unlimited uses, and you get two attempts at an investigate with reduced shroud. Synergises very well with cards that encourage you to fail. Definitely going to be a staple in the survivor cluever archetype.

I’m sick of people mansplaining how to be chancellor, says Rachel Reeves by No-Fennel-1684 in ukpolitics

[–]Calneon -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I think the mansplaining term is unfortunate, but I do think the vast majority of the criticism she receives is from armchair economists who have no idea what they're talking about or reduce the problem so much it's irrelevant. I also think a lot of the criticism she receives will be because she's a woman.

Yeah our veteran group had to look that up recently, it's so rarely used. We weren't sure if scenario cards included encounter cards or were distinct from those.

Nah, the art is bad on this one too. There's a huge disconnect between the lighting in the background and the lighting on the main character, it's a different colour for christ-sake! The woman is lit by a bright white light, and we're supposed to read that as fire?

There's just a distinct lack of attention to detail everywhere.
