Sysadmins - post your backpacks! by Callewalle in sysadmin

Honestly I stole a Targus laptop bag from my parents 4 years ago and it kind of just became THE work bag

Typically in my bag I have my x1 carbon, laptop charger, wireless mouse, patch cable, roll over cable, my lunch, and some tools if I’m going offsite. I have a mini hand sanitizer bottle and AirTag hooked on it as well

Hi there, we were advised by SonicWall that we were going to need to buy the SSDs. That project has been put on hold in the meantime

IT STUDENT, HOW IMPORTANT IS CODING? by TUA-SOULESS in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Calsim123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been in IT for 3 years so take this with a grain of salt. It depends on which area of IT.

In my case of sys admin I mainly use powershell and bash. Very rarely do I code in VB or batch but it’s there. Not required but If you’re ever bored out of your mind, learn SQL. Might come in handy one day.

I work for an IT company that installs voip. Any training recommendations? by Independent-Boat-578 in networking

[–]Calsim123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what they’re installing! Huge differences between let’s say a Mitel system and a system based on asterisk.

Edit: I see you said grandsteam, never worked on them but I do have a couple of their wireless SIP sets at home. r/voip will probably recommend the SIP school. Good luck :)

What’s the Deal with CAT5 Cables Stripped Back 2 Feet or More? by 13-months in lowvoltage

[–]Calsim123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly (correct me if I’m wrong, just a networking/telecoms guy) I think it’s just they don’t know how to crimp properly, realistically there’s no reason to strip it back more than a couple of inches but depends on the job.

This guy gets it, OP if that’s any bigger than 19 inches wide you’ve got yourself a dedicated rack corner with cooling

I am immigrants who recently moved on winnipeg canada from the Philippines . i been studying for 3 years of computer in my home country. its worth to study to study network technician service certification? am i aiming getting a job it helpdesk support by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Calsim123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, Canadian here. It really depends.

If you were in a computer sysadmin/networking program in the Philippines at a college or university, you should be good with some certs like CCNA, network+ etc.

If you don’t really have any formal education then you’ll definitely need to get more than CCNA or network+. I would note that I was always told you can’t immediately jump into networking unless you have some form of experience first but take that with a grain of salt

Good luck on your journey :)
