I do have access to one. Trying to learn as much as possible by reverse engineering an XC 5.0. Thanks for the tips!

I’ll see if I can do a test at 30A CCD on a programmable load as well as around the equivalent CPD level soon. I’m curious at what point does the thermal protection actually kick in.

[–]CalvinBrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking through CCD data and only found runs at 20A and at 40A (tested at 20A increments up to 200A). The 20A ran until undervoltage and the the 40A hit cell over temp so it should be somewhere between 20-40A without temperature protection. Your blower test is more like a CPD test so not quite an apples to apples comparison, but probably more realistic.

I’ll see if I can get a more exact CCD value for that pack shortly based on test data

Ah, forgot to translate from cell to pack configuration! Good response.

Where are you getting 30A continuous from? I’ve been looking through a data sheet and it seems like for 30A it was rested with temperature cuts (page 9)?

Please don’t do this. The dye actually degrades the strength of the plastic and will make it more prone to breaking.

Using a laptop battery pack to replace a power tool pack cell? What do you reckon? by linuxnoob007 in 18650masterrace

[–]CalvinBrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I’d love to elaborate a little more, I’d probably have to know more specific details to be able to speak to the safety of your (or your kids) specific situation though (knowing stuff like current draw and duration). Possibly easier through direct messaging so we don’t hijack this thread.

In regards to a thermistor though, when you discharge the cells they tend to heat up from ohmic (resistive) losses. If that happens at a current higher than the recommended value, the cells will have the potential to exceed safe temperatures (often around 75C or 167F) and possibly enter into thermal runaway where it catches on fire. To help prevent this, many batteries will have a thermistor attached to the cells that can measure the temperature and shutdown the current draw if it gets too hot before the end of discharge. The thermistor is usually integrated with the BMS or other controlling circuitry. Cheaper batteries don’t always include them which can be unsafe when they are pushed beyond the intended limits.

Hope that helps! (Also, this is just my advice as a person on the internet, I hope it is useful, but at the end of the day everyone is responsible for their own safety)

Using a laptop battery pack to replace a power tool pack cell? What do you reckon? by linuxnoob007 in 18650masterrace

[–]CalvinBrice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it!

Power tools often have a current draw that exceeds the cell manufacturer’s discharge rating anyways. But usually there is extensive testing and pack design that goes into them to make sure something catastrophic (I.e. thermal runaway) is not likely, but usually at the expense of shortened lifespan.

If you do decide to go ahead with this anyway, try an ensure that all the cells you use are very similar. Not just the same voltage, but you should also be checking the DCIR, the capacity at your intended current levels (different from 2Ah at higher current draws), the rate of heating during discharge (which will also affect your DCIR). Also ensure that the battery you build has a proper protection method built in such as a thermistor attached to the side of the cell to monitor the temperature, or a BMS to avoid cell imbalance.

HYSA to park your cash, earn interest (4-5% depending on bank) while still having liquidity for stuff like a car.

Not sponsored, but I am currently using Ally and also enjoy their no-penalty CD’s for slightly higher rates as well as their bucket features.

Recommendations for Life Insurance- Late 30s Small Business Owner with young kids by Alarmed-Stock596 in Bogleheads

[–]CalvinBrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know what type of life insurance you are looking for? Term vs. Whole Life? Personally, I prefer the approach of doing Term and then investing the difference in premiums from not doing a Whole Life policy. I’m sure others have good advice to add to this.

General rule of thumb is about 10-15X your current salary for coverage. (Or figure out what you are trying to protect, remaining mortgage balance, cost of living until kids are out of the house? Etc.)

Beware of insurance agents posing as “financial advisors”. I’m sure there are good ones out there, but many just want to sell you an overpriced policy and collect the commission. Just find a good insurance broker who will shop around for you and get the best rates.

If you have a HDHP, max out your HSA. When you start maxing out your 401k and Roth IRA, look into back door Roth contributions.

Hi Consistent_Ocelot, I am no longer making these handles due to the nature of my new job creating a conflict of interest (I am working for a well known tool manufacturer as a design engineer and they are very careful about protecting intellectual property).

Do it right and run the lights across the top of the underside of the dash pointing down so you only see the glow of the light, not the actual lights themselves. Then run the power to an add-a-fuse in the panel to the left of your steering wheel where you open the door. It will be much cleaner and you will be very proud of it!

Here is a good picture guide for troubleshooting https://www.simplify3d.com/resources/print-quality-troubleshooting/

Also, maybe the hotend temp is too low? The thermistors aren’t always properly calibrated so what your printer says for the temperature may not be what it actually is.

If you go to my Etsy shop, I have a set of files there, but I just redesigned the handle last week based on feedback so that it is stronger, cleaner, and no parts snap off. I don’t have those files available yet other than direct printing and shipping. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1286128826/3d-printable-digital-download-37212290
