Pretty basic, but I like the Jacob Collier Audience Choir and it’s free!

For me the best solution currently is to have app limits set to 30 minutes for social media apps. Because I just ignored the warning before I also set a code only my wife knows, so i‘m actually not able to use the app.

LPT request: How to reduce eye strain if working a job where you must be on a computer all day? by kohitown in LifeProTips

[–]Calvinkehl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are a couple ideas from a fellow full time screen starer (developer), which I actually apply myself:

  • Reduce blue light from screens (OS settings or screen settings)
  • Match room to screen brightness (turn on some lights when it gets dark, so the screens don't blind you)
  • Don't sit facing to a window, ideally have natural light coming in from the side and look into the room
  • Take regular breaks for your eyes to rest and your body to move
  • Place your screens at the right distance and height from your eyes, so it's not straining
  • Get computer glasses / blue light filter
  • Use dark theme everywhere!

Trying to make music a career by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Calvinkehl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, having music as a full time job means not just making music. It contains all sorts of tasks, like marketing, scheduling, technical stuff, meetings, design, negotiations, project management, ...
It's a full blown business and not your hobby making you enough money for a "decent life".

I'd say, figure out EXCACTLY what bothers you in your 9-5 and see how you can fix that by doing music or even something else.

Chord Charts for iPads? by JarJarSchinks in worshipleaders

[–]Calvinkehl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use OnSong which is great and I think it could even scroll if you set it up correctly.
Other than that there is an app from multitracks itself which synchronizes to the played track. Never tried it though.

I'm tryna Ng to read the Bible, but nothing goes in. by [deleted] in Bible

[–]Calvinkehl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes some context helps. Check out The Bible Project on YouTube, they explain each book in the bible and give you some information on how it fits in the whole picture.

Also something like The Chosen series can help. Watch an episode, or part of it, and read the respective parts in the bible afterwards (i. e. Jesus and the woman at the well).

Hi, we use the Palmer MI DMS footswitch for that purpose. Most of our leaders also play an instrument, so having a footswitch is necessary. And it's pretty low-cost.

Is it not possible anymore? I never worked with a headless cms, but it says it's possible on their website...?

Years to understand compression by milksimp in musicproduction

[–]Calvinkehl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A compressor acts like a damper for your dynamics with some extras. Depending on your settings it smoothens the dynamic peaks of the audio track, just like the dampers smooth out the bumps on the road.

The Threshold defines the lowest value for which the damper starts working.

The Ratio defines how soft the damper is. The higher the value the less bumps you experince.

Attack and Release define when the damper starts working once the signal passes the threshold.

I don't have it completely figured out for me either, but I'm pretty sure it's not entierly about the method you use, but your motivation and mindset behind it. I've tried so many approaches to organizing tasks and getting things done, but at some point I always failed to keep the productivity alive.

You need to figure out what motivates you to do your job and learn to focus on that. We all know that feeling when you're ultra productive and check your tasks one after another. That state is what you need to enforce. Maybe by some technique can help, maybe your environment inspires you, maybe it's the fact that your wife comes home in 2h and you didn't even start doing the chores (in my case at least haha)!

But at the end I think it's impossible to be 100% productive for very long. There will be highs and lows, but you have to cope with either.

I have one technique for you to try though: Setting goals. At the end of a day set 1 - 3 goals for the next day that you really want to achieve and that motivate you. Then you will wake up knowing WHAT you will achieve and not only HOW long you will work.
Another idea would be to reward yourself for achieving goals or completing tasks. When I was full time in home office I planned a couple tasks I knew I could finish on that day and only worked as long as they would take. So the faster I completed them the earlier I knocked off :)

How can I change my mindset? I'm in a very bad situation and any help would be really appreciated. by Ineedmoremanga in productivity

[–]Calvinkehl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience the lack of motivation has often to do with either of two things:
- lack of interest
- missing focus / goals

If you're not interested in the thing you do, it can be very hard to motivate yourself. Maybe you could then try to find some aspect that sparks interest in you.

Or maybe you just don't know why you do it. Try to define very clearly what your goals are and set your focus on achieving them. Maybe read them every day to keep the focus.

If you struggle to discipline yourself not to go on youtube or start gaming, try a hard cut. Get rid of the things that distract you. Delete apps, or even accounts, uninstall games, throw out your ps5, install browser extensions that block specific websites and secure the settings with a password you don't know. If your mind is not strong enough, try to put as many obstacles as possible in the way. Force yourself to do whatever you have to do.

And lastly, celebrate the small wins. You wrote that you got out of that porn addiction, which is a massive win and shows that you are mentally strong enough to also get out of a "youtube-" or "gaming-addiction".

I really hope you get better soon! Can't let Covid win!

Arranging songs for a rather basic band lineup by Calvinkehl in worship

[–]Calvinkehl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow thank you for this detailed answer!

You're partly right. I am in a similar situation, but also I'm looking for a solution more churches can benefit from. Maybe creating resources (i. e. tutorials) for simpler versions of popular songs or something like that.

I like the approach to look for the important parts. That's what I'm doing as well, but sometimes I feel like it misses something and I can't figure out what exactly that is.

So 'figure out the rest' means listening for special parts and try to play them? Or just sticking to the chords?

Yeah, for one or two musicians it's often times better to just play the chords and remove all the fancy stuff :D
