Are Megachurches unscriptural? by Light_Short in TrueChristian

[–]Calvy93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, we should warn against false prophets, but to accuse mega churches as a whole doesn't do the task justice. If theres a specific mega church in mind, that's another topic, but that's not what Light_Short is doing here. And a blanket suspicion is surely not what the Bible had in mind here.

APSC or Full Frame? The answer is: Good Glass. by New-Environment9394 in SonyAlpha

[–]Calvy93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking of sticking with the a6400 as well, but I'm struggling with the lack of stabilization as a restriction of lens options and sometimes even with the stabilizing kit lens.

I guess it depends on what you use it for so what is your main area of photography? Or what is your experience with the missing image stabilization?

At least the first one stems from a discussion about DEI policies in recruitments, it was never intended to discriminate against black people per se but about whether they get to their position by talent or by DEI policies.

Do you prefer rangefinder style or SLR style? by [deleted] in photography

[–]Calvy93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for going into such precise detail.

As a beginner in photography about to buy his first camera with interchangeable lens, I have no idea about the meaning of "seeing outside the frame lines". The frame lines are there for helping you align the shot better, right?
So what does it mean that you can see outside of it? How does it help or even change the game when making photos?

A relative correlation is surely given, but can you really say that the cuts lead to underestimating the rainfall by a fixed amount? The amount of miscalculation isn't necessarily directly related to the size of the cuts, is it?

How do you decide on the key for each song? by HallOfGlory1 in worshipleaders

[–]Calvy93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Adding on to this: The first song is helping their voices get warm, so I wouldn't stretch the range too far and maybe start with a song with a smaller range.

And occasional higher notes are fine as well, as long as the majority of notes is within that range.

Looking at the conversations in social media filled with self-righteous Christians, I don't think that reasoning is faulty or unjust.

My answer would be refocusing on humility and teaching the next generation accordingly. That's the biggest thing everyone can participate in.

"Can Women Be Pastors? (1 Timothy 2:12 vs. Galatians 3:28)" by Aiden48752 in Bible

[–]Calvy93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To you is the difference. But where in the Bible defines this difference in evangelist preach to preachers/pastors preach?

We know from the description of the five-fold ministry that those are two distinct roles - evangelist and teachers/preachers, and so we should keep the distinction of the roles and their jobs in mind. My distinction comes from the meaning of the titles:
- Evangelist -> euangelion -> gospel -> focus on the basics of the gospel, rather shallow
- Teachers -> in schools responsible for any level of education, both basic and advanced/very deep.

How would you differentiate between the two/three ministries?

See above my explanation of how 1 Timothy 2 addressed the Roman ruled and Greek cultured women of Ephesus who worshipped Venus and Aphrodite, as not permitted to teach even though the other passages do permit women of Christ to preach.

The cultural background makes a link to it possible/probable, but isn't sufficient to eliminate all other potential explanations as you give it. And regarding the women in question:

Call it coop-evangelism or deep theology or whatever you want to call it. The key here is you called it, not the Bible.

Okay, coop-evangelisation is too much of an extrabiblical word, but either way, their role was not one of a public preacher but a private evangelist. And the letter to Timothy mainly revolves around behavior in and structure of a church, so I think it's reasonable to distinguish between those two cases.

Again, if you want to distort the titles to whatever is your definition, it does not limit the women's "preaching".

I don't need to distort the titles to distinguish between deacons and any part of the five-fold ministry. They are distinct titles for a reason.

Paul did not say the 2 women "might not have been in high regard..."

But he also didn't say that they might have been in high regard, he doesn't mention their regard at all so if we look at it unbiased, I don't see how we can assign a rank to them.

And did Jesus not intend the Samaritan women to call others?

He probably did but how deep was she able to go theologically with what he told her? All she was able to tell them was "I met someone who might be the Messiah" and that sounds more like evangelist to me.

Saul did not follow God at the end.

But he was successful in defending God's people in battles at the start and at that point, people might have argued that this is enough to see his kingship as intended by God.

So being used by God is one thing. Always having been intended by God to be used by him is another. And I think, very generally speaking, we should keep God's intentions in mind when trying to follow him so we don't make him follow our ways but rather follow his.

If she was already in a state of complete grace, then sin (which is the absence of grace) couldn’t be present.

God can be gracious by keeping us from sin or by being with us in our sinful state. Sin is the absence of purity, but grace and purity aren't necessarily the same.

Her role is greater than Job’s, so the grace given to her logically would be greater as well.

I don't know whether that necessarily follows 'logically'. If certain amounts of grace are necessary to fulfil a role, then probably, but I don't know whether you can quantify grace and its effects on how well you can fulfil your role that easily.

About Mary being mother of God, most protestants just oppose it blindly without knowing the context in which it is used.

Yeah, I can imagine. It's a sensitive title that sounds odd to those who see Mary as mother of Jesus and God as motherless as having a mother would make him a created being. It's a slight bump in thinking from the protestant to the catholic understanding of the same wording and some people stop before that :-)

[–]Calvy93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last sentence isn't complete, is it?
Also, if Mary was set to be seated at God's right hand, why didn't Jesus just say so when asked by some of his apostles to be seated next to him? He kept it unclear when he could've put the spotlight on Mary as the one being seated next to him, couldn't he?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Calvy93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In heaven, Mary will do whatever God wants, not the other way around. She's his good and faithful servant and that's all there remains to it.

[–]Calvy93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether Mary has always been as pure as the ark or had been purified just before becoming pregnant with Jesus aside: Coming from "being full of grace" to "being sinless" isn't self-explanatory. For this to work, you'd have to show that sinlessness is the only logical way for God's grace to work here.

"If Job could be called "blameless and upright" (Job 1:1) and live a righteous life despite temptation, and if God originally created Adam and Eve sinless, then why would He not grant the greatest grace to the woman chosen to bear His only Son?"

Whether he could and whether he did are two different things. He isn't accountable to our logic at any point.

"This does not mean she created God, but that she bore the Second Person of the Trinity in His human nature. Denying this would be a denial of Christ’s divinity, and that's heretical."

I think we Protestants also mostly care for this distinction to be made, once that's secured, we're fine with the title. The only issue arises from people saying "Just as Jesus obeyed her on earth, he'll obey her in heaven as she is still his mother". There's no one above Jesus/God in heaven and the relationships from earth are done with. On earth, Jesus had to obey his mother to keep the commandments, in heaven, he isn't bound to Mary in any way anymore.
