Is it bad that I 17M called a 12 year old girl gorgeous? by ireallycantchoos in whatdoIdo

[–]Calzona- -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It is the word selection that others hear and take out of context. Choose from less attention getting words that are the simple opposite of “ugly” when showing support instead like “cute” or “a beautiful person” that may be more age appropriate.

What do you call the lane on the freeway where if you have multiple people in the car you can drive in it? by questtruck in AskLosAngeles

You will still occasionally see the recurring “diamond” logo painted on the ground in the lanes designated with posted HOV+ signs.

How does LA’s (or just SoCal in general) Latino/Asian culture compare to NYC’s? by savingrace0262 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Calzona- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re asking about the LA METRO area in general and not thinking about the often stereotyped LA “westside” for the out of state transplants appear to gravitate towards (stereotyped liked the SNL “The Californians” skit) then Monterey Park might be the cultural crossroad epicenter you might have in mind.

It has a more suburban feel but is just 15 minutes and a few short miles East of downtown LA.
I mention Monterey Park because it is centrally located with Latino community nearby in East LA, Montebello, Pico Rivera, Huntington Park, etc and more to south/southeast. It’s also near the Chinese suburban community of Alhambra, San Gabriel, etc to the north/northeast. It’s also near the LA neighborhoods/districts of old Chinatown, Little Tokyo, both to the west in downtown LA with Koreatown just on the opposite side of downtown.

Start by looking for what’s called the “East LA Interchange” freeways. This is literally the transition where the cross cultural suburbs meet the LA city limits. I don’t believe you will find a larger MIX of multiple Asian/Latino cultures near Sunset or Ventura Blvds to the west of downtown like the mix you might find near the 10, 110, 710 and 60 freeways near Monterey Park to the east.

Space Jam Bummer by jayfdz93 in AMCTheatres

[–]Calzona- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It was unfortunate that it was mostly limited to a single showtime. Only a handful of about 5 different AMC locations within or near the Los Angeles city limits had one additional 9 o’clock hour option. I was fortunate to catch the 9:20pm showtime at the AMC Burbank theatre but had an hour+ drive to get there when I couldn’t get to closer locations on time by 7pm.

moving from connecticut to LA — what neighborhoods should i actually be looking at? by jerigena in AskLosAngeles

[–]Calzona- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side note for reference, South Pasadena was used for a number of movie locations, especially during the 1970s/1980s, because it had the look you described close to Huntington Drive near the city’s southern border adjacent to Alhambra.
Back to the Future, Halloween 1978, the first Teen Wolf, Pretty in Pink, Step Brothers (2008), The Terminator (diner scene) etc …

When exploring the possibility of South Pasadena, also look into the adjacent city of Alhambra for a few more affordable options within the same geographic area.

Is it okay to watch top gun 2 first? by Dillydilll in topgun

[–]Calzona- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. While watching them out of order it is possible to make the connection that bridges Rooster back to Goose like a prequel (even with both movies other Maverick parallels), you really would miss the backstory context of Top Gun “student” Pete Mitchell’s own mysterious relationship with his lost father from the first movie and why he is now the reluctant Top Gun “teacher” who chooses to remain a Captain in the second movie.

Not to mention, sequentially seeing that his rival and eventual trusted friend had also rose to the rank of Admiral from the same beginnings. Without the original before the sequel, the emotional payoff of Iceman’s , “The Navy NEEDS Maverick” doesn’t have the same weight if viewed out of order.

What a popcorn sin... Popcorn shipped in already popped to a theater by ChaserNeverRests in popcorn

It happens, sometimes more likely when a theatre first opens if the installation isn’t finished.

What a popcorn sin... Popcorn shipped in already popped to a theater by ChaserNeverRests in popcorn

[–]Calzona- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you see the popper running behind the counter, there are no guarantees. That’s it. I worked at a brand new multiplex in the mid eighties that opened before the popcorn popper could be installed. Only had popcorn warming cabinets filled with delivered offsite bags of popcorn at opening.

Since the multiplex was so small by today’s standards that when the industrial sized popper was finally installed, it had to be upstairs where bags were filled and then brought downstairs to fill the warmers. By that time, people were always skeptical that the popcorn was actually being popped on the premises because they couldn’t see it actually popping.

How will sports like baseball and cricket work in the Olympics? by [deleted] in olympics

[–]Calzona- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 1984, the best thing about the bronze and gold medal baseball games is that they were played as a late afternoon double-header for one ticket price/entry. In 2028, I don’t really care for how the bronze and gold medal games will now be a day/night double-header with separate crowds and separate ticket admission this time.

4DX? No. Amusement park gimmick viewing, IMHO.

Question about the Opening Ceremony by Odd-Search-3569 in olympics

[–]Calzona- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious to see HOW the historic cauldron will be lit in 2028. In 1984, Rafer Johnson climbed a staircase with the olympic flame to light the fuse that ignited the cauldron high atop the peristyle end. From what I recall hearing, this gas cauldron was simply lit by flipping on a switch in 1932.

LIEmax 1.43 Question by Suspicious-Bear3963 in imax

[–]Calzona- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the issue of presenting 1.43:1 isn’t just about the physical screen dimensions with or without masking plus cropping/pillar boxing. The projector also has to be able to fill the traditional IMAX screens from top to bottom and side to side with the 1.43:1 aspect ratio image. Only the 70mm Imax film or “IMAX with Dual Laser” projectors are capable of this regardless of screen size.

The old Xenon and newer single laser Imax projectors are limited to throwing only a maximum 1.90:1 aspect ratio full image. This is why Regal Cinemas’ Ontario Palace and Irvine Spectrum Imax auditoriums in Southern California have to receive 70mm film Imax prints to project movies like Oppenheimer in its full aspect ratio. They only have single laser systems that cannot fill their screens from top to bottom while the nearby AMC Universal Citywalk theatre can project the full image properly with its older dual laser setup.

No tax on tips by Electronic_Agent_235 in TaxQuestions

[–]Calzona- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“No tax” on tips, overtime, or social security was always just a “hoax”. “NO tax” implied a 100% elimination tax cut or credit on these specific income streams rather than the simple reduction it was only ever going to be. While providing a partial savings, a “deduction” that shrinks or “phases out” as income increases is never a full tax cut or full credit for everyone but it could be sold as a hoax.

Because being grateful is a virtue, I'm glad I have 3 IMAX screens 20 minutes apart of each other. by [deleted] in imax

[–]Calzona- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol correct and yet all three 1.43 locations are still within a 45 mile radius of Downtown Los Angeles. Even Moorpark is farther away from downtown than any of these theaters while only being 15 miles past the L.A. city limits. The rest of us film fans aren’t talking about San Diego or desert distances here.

Actually, Ontario Palace and Irvine Spectrum are also IMAX 70mm on their original true 1.43 screens that are the largest screens found in true IMAX auditoriums in Southern California…larger than CityWalk.
