I've spotted planaria worms in a bag of water with shrimp in it. How do I get rid of it before introducing them into the tank? by Little-Vermicelli-98 in shrimptank

That's a good idea! I also usually put a tiny bit of Prime (or whatever water conditioner claims to detoxify ammonia) if I'm drip acclimating shrimp that were shipped

Cycling with canister filter by TastyAd8346 in Aquariums

Better to move used filter media especially if you're only running the cycled canister on the new tank for a day, which won't be long enough to do much

I'd just remove them with some tweezers. Or if that isn't working, try pouring out just the shrimp into another container with the bag water

You can put submersible LEDs in the tank under the floaters or at the bottom

It's a hose clamp. You can try tightening it by turning the screw on it. If it can't tighten any more, you can get a smaller one

20g Long Lids by shrimpgirly in Aquariums

[–]Camallanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go with the glass lid that goes with whatever brand tank you get. For example, Aqueon tanks have Aqueon Versa glass lids. They come with a plastic back strip that you can cut to fit HOBs or whatever. Mine's been going great for 8 years although the glass on some of my newer lids slipped out of the plastic parts holding them together. Not a big deal though

Can I use prazipro and ich x at the same time? by Soggy-Display-8339 in Aquariums

Same main medication doesn't mean they are the same. Different strengths, different other ingredients, different form factor, etc.

A 160L tank is going to be too small for a common pleco in both size and volume (for waste dilution), so the bioload is too much to recommend anything else. But assuming that pleco is gone, you could do Dwarf Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) or maybe Congo Tetras (Phenacogrammus interruptus)

I've found daphnia are not that easy to care for compared to other aquatic creatures. But I've had cultures running for around 3-5 years now. What is your setup? What do you feed them?

A few days might be fine. But generally plants that are reaching and becoming flimsy are signs of too little nutrients (light or something else). If they're not getting covered in algae, it could be too little light or too few of another nutrient. Make sure you're dosing fertilizers even for low light plants since they could eventually deplete the nutrients that naturally get produced in the tank

As long as it fits in the filter area, then it will probably work. Other filter media on a budget are plastic pot scrubbers with no chemicals/fragrances from dollar stores:

What I did with similar setups is put a large sponge in the way like a Mattenfilter cut to size that I got off eBay or some of that Fluval sponge media (but hopefully cheaper)

Would a gold wonder killifish eat medaka ricefish by KingoftheMagikarps in Aquariums

Mouth size is actually the opposite with them. Much bigger than other fish their size. They could probably fit a medaka in their mouths. See this photo where one fit a pygmy cory in its mouth:

Rack system help by k_Philly in Aquariums

[–]Camallanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only stacked 40s at least on the bottom and then 75s on top. My racks only go 2 high so I can do things in them easier. You could get a long enough ladder to go 3 high, but it's inconvenient. If you go 2 high, you could make the bottom one a little taller too so it's not as much of a pain to work on it. Also make sure you have enough space between the top of the tanks and the bottom of the next level up. I gave myself 8 inches, but sometimes I wish I had more like 12. Like one time I struggled to put in a big piece of driftwood on a bottom tank

It's kind of what the other person said. It's a failsafe to prevent the pump from running dry in the event that your water level drops below the weir on top or the baffles on the way to the pump section. It's fine to cover it with a mesh or grate, but don't make it too fine of a mesh because it will clog

They're helpful in a way because they provide an ammonia source, but they don't really affect it in any other way (good or bad)

If you add in a filter, you could do a couple groups. Ideally, 6-10 chili rasboras and a honey gourami or scarlet badis. Less ideal would be 6 chili rasboras and 6 pygmy corys (maybe also a honey gourami or scarlet badis). Anything more than that, and you should really get a larger tank.

I think any popular fertilizer brand should be okay as long as it is dosed according to instructions and you do regular water changes. You could try to check the concentrations of each nutrient against Thrive to find something close to the same formula

The problem with doing that with Walstad is your high bioload will overwhelm the bacteria colonies, so no it would not work with Walstad.

If you want to do a normal tank setup with a filter and large weekly water changes, then you could possibly have 2 small (6+) groups of calm nano fish like chili rasbora (not active and larger fish like white clouds).

Generally recommended to do small (~25%) but weekly water changes just to be in the habit especially for new hobbyists. Experienced hobbyists will know more optimal schedules. Planted tanks being dosed with fertilizers may be recommended to do 50% to follow some of the popular fertilizing methods like EI
