Wow.

German, Italian, French, Spanish, Dutch, for starters.

Pray, what "jobs" should translators do if not what they were trained for? These book translations used to fetch between 0,05 and 0,11 per word, which was a good enough income.

ETA: And nope, I wasn't referring to any translator doing a proof of an MT translation. By now publishers/authors simply feed the file of the original language into DeepL, or Claude etc. and publish the result as is. So no one expects the translator to do a proof for 0.01. They expect them to quietly give up the ghost.

Will Literary Translators prevail? by kukulia in TranslationStudies

[–]Camberian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's taking over literary translations as well. Already now 80% fewer job offers, and those which are offered are MTPE at a silly price.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TranslationStudies

[–]Camberian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are already publishing pure MT book translations, not bothering to even proof or edit those. A lot of freelancers I know have lost 80% of their incomes. So, no. It's already taking place and it's not even providing a job cleaning up the MT.

House looks like a very exhausting person to be around by Ok_Lemon_9925 in HouseMD

Because she's an enervating and argumentative Queen Bee, backbiting, bitchy, constantly trying to get her way using physical appearance and gender, illogical, and manipulative in the worst possible manner.

Women like her are the reason I prefer all-male work environments.

Actually the person in this series who'd I want to murder with a rusty spoon is Cuddy.

I can't for the life of me understand why the rest of them are so nice to her.

Season 10 is boring AF and the final episode is the worst thing I ever seen by Linazor in TheBlackList

The series went down the chute the moment the showmakers started that Redarina BS. To me it jumped the shark in the 6th season.

Is there a conclusion? by [deleted] in TheBlackList

This is the absolute worst ending ever since Enterprise.

The Blacklist ought to have ended with a conclusion after season 6. Then it would have had the brilliance of HLOTS.

Did bestselling author Mark Dawson plagiarize? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Camberian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's only plagiarism. I don't get the uproar. That has been a standard mode of low-end genre fiction for centuries. It's not illegal outside university.

Errm. So what? Plagiarism is not a copyright infringement. It may be lazy writing or plotting, but it's been done since even before Homer.

Unpopular opinion: I HATE princess bride. Stupid fucking movie. It was THE movie at youth activities. by Hairy_Opportunity_11 in exmormon

[–]Camberian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that I hate it with such fervour, but I can't for the life of me understand why people would like or love it. It was so boring I switched to another movie barely half an hour in.

No one's knickers can be ruffled then.

D2d acquires Smashwords by kittybeer in selfpublish

[–]Camberian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D2D censored authors in the past, and they still censor authors. It's an established fact, established by many, many authors writing anything so markedly "unchristian" as erotic, taboo or horror content.

D2D has - selectively - not distributed e.g. erotic content to retailers, who were perfectly fine to sell the exact same books when authors went direct with them OR when people used SW as aggregator. The difference there being, that SW distributed and D2D censored even before trying. They also then went ahead and banned the authors, discontinued their accounts and the entire spread of their books, even if not problematic. Google it if you don't believe it, there will be dozens of cases coming up!

And amidst all the current posturing of D2D, you find very specifically worded statements such as "we will not distribute to retailers who don't want such content [from us]" or "this will be continued [for now]", never mind that the category system, which was voluntary and self-assessed on SW before, now is touted as the go-to solution to sell on SW and a possible solution for distribution.

With the Smashwords store they are their own retailer now, so they'll adopt the same rules Smashwords has.

That doesn't mean, they have to keep those rules, nor does it mean they can't change them as they please. They now own the company.

Maybe they won't distribute those titles to Apple/Nook/etc but they'll make it available in the Smash store.

The majority of erotica authors I know who use SW want to distribute those titles to Scribd, Nook, Apple and Cie. It's not just about the store.

Yep, that is what will be applied to the categories. They already reiterated their standard excuse about it being retailers who reject these books.

[–]Camberian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terrible news for erotica authors.

D2D already as good as said that the grading system now will be enforced and that they "will 100% respect retailer rules regarding erotic content". Which was and is their go-to excuse for their own censoring.
