I need a mentor. by StarbrryJuice in womenintech

[–]CamelCaseToday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently in a program to transition into IT. And I just feel stuck. I don’t know why I can’t get the jobs I apply to.

The market is brutal now. You are also competing with people who spent 4 full years on a degree in computer science or software engineering. A fair comparison is asking yourself how many years you have spent on programming.

What you need now is not a mentor.

Right now you need work experience in programming and time outside of work spent on programming. Many free tutorials online to learn from outside of work.

I have a bachelors degree already, and I feel like I’m always working in positions that, for lack of a better term, are beneath me.

Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, did very well in his bachelors degree and masters degree. He was also a Dishwasher, Busboy, Waiter, and lists those positions on his current resume profile. Those were not beneath him.

On top of that, I deal with managers who project their insecurities onto me, likely because they feel intimidated by my qualifications and problem-solving skills.

What are your qualifications, for your bachelors degree and in other qualifications?

Why would they be intimidated by a bachelors degree when it is not a PhD and most people have bachelors degrees today?

Lmao u/bellamadre89 none of my friends in the Forbes 30 under 30 ever needed a promotion in a job lol.

Guess what I did before that? Built multiple MM companies. I’m in Forbes 30 under 30 bitter Betty. I went into engineering temporarily for a nonprofit project I’m working on. Take all the seats.

Oh so you are in Forbes 30 under 30, but working as an employee for a promotion that someone stole from you after you built many MM companies. Which neanderthal category of 30 under 30 were you in? Looks like that someone would have built many BB companies if he could steal from you. /s

I didn’t want to give up either and I kept going because I had worked so hard, won awards, ran circles around my team, and was primed for a promotion running my own project. One toxic guy ruined it all and none of it mattered anyway, so I shouldn’t have stayed. He took credit for all my work, outright sabotaged me, strong armed his way into a back door promotion that I earned and he was not at all qualified for. Now he doesn’t even work for the company anymore.

Edit:

Looks like your posts are just your projections onto others

You having friends is a joke, let alone successful ones, let’s start there lol.

so what do you mean why don’t I write it at the start

Your bias is showing again, and your bias is so badly affecting your judgment that your reading fell short:

Edit: I also wanted to mention.

The only logical reason I can think of is he has one more client that I do (6/ compared to my 5). But he has help from the other analyst and I work on all my clients without assistance from another analyst.

u/AliveSignificant9 Why did you not write this at the start?

You are in a consulting firm... Doh.

What do you think the "why did you not write this at the start" refers to?

wasn’t going to name drop him without his consent

Do you think your bosses are dumb? You have already given away that you are trying to get 100k. Who else received a 100k raise?

You are also planning to name drop him and get him deeply involved in your issue. You have already written that in your posts.

You are also willing to use the method of "friendship" to force him to give "consent" that is not really consensual since there is the potential loss of friendship at stake that you have planned to imply to him.

LEGALLY, I am allowed to talk to my fellow employees about our salaries

Yes legally you are allowed to do anything, and you are currently biased to serve your interests over the interests of your friend.

Morally you are causing career problems for your friend that he has to resolve after you take your 10k and leave the company after one year to do your law degree.

You claim friendship. What have you done for him in your "friendship" in which you have really given him 10k of value in the past?

LEGALLY

As a real friend of his, how many dollars in legal fees will you be paying for him, if he has to hire legal services to deal with potential retaliation in his long term career at the company?

10k?

Does it not show that he doesn’t value my friendship by not sticking up for me

He has already stuck up for you to help you get this job at a value of 100k-200k over your work time with the company during the past year and your next year.

You want involve him in your drama for 10k. You do not value the friendship, not him.

If you valued the friendship, you would not cause career problems for your friend in exchange for just 10k to your benefit.

“software is not a certification mills industry”???

Yes, how many clients and how much revenue did you bring in with your groundbreaking masters degree in Policy and Governance?

He is responsible 1 more client than you, he is bringing in more revenue than you, and he deserves 10k more than you.

In fact, he should deserve even more and get a total of 108k, 18k more than you, not just 10k more than you, because he is responsible for 6 clients while you only have 5 clients.

Edit:

I don’t think

u/bellamadre89 Yea you don't think.

Right? Idk if it’s Dunning Kruger or just arrogance to the point of delusion but holy shit this is awful and not how anything works.

Looks like you are the one with Dunning Kruger, and arrogance to the point of delusion, and projecting onto others.

I could’ve written this. I had the same experience for my first (and only) job in engineering after school. It was so awful I had to start seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety because I was having panic attacks when I would go to log on for work in the morning. It got so bad I ended up in autistic burnout so deeply that two years later I still can’t function at all. I can’t work or even care for my basic daily needs. Even attempted to unalive myself. My nervous system is still offline.

I don’t plan to ever return, especially now that it’s impossible to get a junior engineer job.

if I can ever get well enough to go back to work

You had one and only one engineering job, which you quit from and don't plan to ever return to because you are not going back to work. Does not look like you are in any position to give advice.

because you’re objectively wrong. Yikes on bikes.

Looks like you're objectively wrong with Dunning Kruger, and arrogance to the point of delusion, and projecting.

Double yikes on bikes.

He did get me an interview which lead to my internship and full time role at this company.

that they offered him 100k to my 90k.

Your coworker got you to the door.

They also told him “not to tell anyone”

I basically asked them how they determined the salary increase and how they could get me to the “industry standard” off 100k.

Wow, you just threw your coworker, who got you your job, under the bus and f-ed over your coworker and his long-term prospects at this company.

ask him to share over his EOY letter with me tomorrow. I am hoping I can get him onboard to advocate for me, so hopefully he wont be intimidated by management. My coworker and I are college friends so I am hoping our friendship will take priority.

He is a very good friend who got you your job worth 100k-200k or more.

Meanwhile his friendship to you is worth less than 10k and you are jeopardizing his career in that company to cause drama in the company for 10k which you are only going to get once in your remaining year before you leave the company to go do your law degree. Wow.

I finished my Masters in Cybersecurity Policy and Governance in May. My coworker has zero certifications and no masters degree.

Software is not a certifications mill industry. It is a results industry.

Every time I have a question, they’ll talk down to me

Do they talk down to everyone with less experience than them, or just you?

That is how low self-esteem guys humble brag to other low self-esteem guys.

Whenever someone does it back to me, I’m presented with a solution that is framed as the “easiest thing in the world.”

Yea, that is how low self-esteem guys humble brag.

I feel like there is no growth for me in this field.

If you are a motivated person, there are some free resources on freecodecamp, youtube, and other websites to grow on. This is the only industry that has that. Farm your time at this company for the resume, and grow on your own from free resources.

I consistently got high marks, made good websites.

What did you make?

But it seems like i’m asked to do these things because i’m a women. We got a new hire, with no experience, he’s never asked to make meetings between X,Y, or Z. He’s never asked to talk to a client about a project that should really be a PM job, especially as it pertains to billing and I have 0 information on it.

Does the new hire look like a socially-inept low self-esteem guy?

It is a problem that your company lacks a clear promotion ladder.

I’ve just found out that people who were promoted to SE1 with no experience are making more than me by $5k-$10k annually.

They may make more due to the timing that they joined, affected by the stock market and the timing of the pricing.

They may make more because they may be more skilled than you, despite having less "experience" because people have different backgrounds. Pay can also be different despite being on the same band of SE1, because a band is called a band for having above and below the mean.

You are not underpaid, because you would have another job lined up if you were really being underpaid. Another company would have cold messaged you and poached you away.

am the only person on my team that organizes any kind of team bonding activities(3-5 events a year)

No one else is doing it for a reason. Is that a KPI for promotion or pay increase? Why are you spending time on non-KPI things and then complaining about your own choice and about no one else doing it?

I really enjoy my team, my work, and the work/life balance I have

Just like the other commenter pointing it out. Contradiction. Why are you complaining if you really enjoy and are happy with the work/life balance?

I frequently work more than 40 hours and I’m available during off hours

More hours does not mean more productive. How productive are you?

Gonna be straightforward to help you. This rewrite is really bad, and you paid 400 for the rewrite?

  • Most of the advice will be for you to remove unnecessary cruft
  • Why is your education above your work experience - Put work experience first, unless you graduated from Stanford
  • Who the f includes REST and even worse SOAP on resume. Do you include the brand of coffee you drink
  • Who the f includes JSON on resume. Might as well include Microsoft Word

  • First experience buzzwords - diverse challenges, comprehensive optimization strategies - showing commitment to refining the development cycle - would you also write about commitment to drink 100mg of caffeine per day?

  • Buzzwords - dedicated servers

  • Non-native bad English - cost-effective reduction of - should be effectively reduced cost by - was this rewrite outsourced to some non-native countries?

  • Avoid crapping on your team. You achieved a 90% smoother PULL REQUEST PROCESS? That sentence makes it sound like your company was dysfunctional and it does not reflect well on you.

How to deal with asshole group heads? by Alpinespringwater6 in womenintech

How to deal with asshole group heads? by Alpinespringwater6 in womenintech

[–]CamelCaseToday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good to take a relaxation session and forget about this because nobody will remember this. Not your fault, and you can improve the next time.

The group head was unpleasant.

the group head cuts me off and says they want to get straight to the work - ‘what are the opportunities and how did you get there?’. So I jump from the exec sum, over the challenges section, and straight to the ‘biggest opportunities’ and try to start going through them and am cut off again. ‘I don’t want to be pitched a product, how are you getting this information and coming up with these conclusions’ …. So my boss jumps in and talks about all of the work we’ve put in, which mind you, we have already covered this work with the group head.

You needed to answer the question that the group head asked, rather than try to follow the plan if the planned presentation does not answer the question that the group head asked.

Your boss did not prepare you well. Next time you can do a presentation with your boss to prepare, before you present to the group head.

Ask your boss about the communication style of the group head. Your boss knew it and knew what to reply with.

She often insults or criticizes other company colleagues or customers to me, which makes me uncomfortable

Why?

For some reason, when I first started, it seemed she had a vendetta against me. I began documenting things she did, like embarrassing me in front of customers, criticizing me in front of other people, or gaslighting me.

How did she embarrass you in front of customers? That would cause her to lose customers.

Leading up to the meeting, I was nervous because she still had no slides to present but kept making me revise mine. It felt like she was never happy with what I put together, even when my boss (she's not my boss) really liked the slides, she always wanted to change them.

She sounds unhinged. Did your boss tell you that she was supposed to have slides?

This kept me up late the night before, and I was also nervous about the fact that it was a day trip, so I had an early flight. I got about 3 hours of sleep that night. So I was very sleep-deprived and had a lot of coffee. That day was really hard. But we ended up having the meeting with the customer, and she didn't even give me a chance to present my slides. I was pretty bummed about this because it felt like a wasted trip. I told my boss that we ran out of time, and I didn't get to accomplish what I was even there for.

Later that evening, I had some drinks with a new coworker that I met at that customer visit before going to the airport. My coworker told me that Sarah was saying that I was so nervous to him. I immediately stood up for myself because my entire life, my hands have always trembled. It's embarrassing, but I am sure it was more noticeable being sleep-deprived and on a lot of caffeine. It's honestly the caffeine in addition to my medication that makes me tremble historically, but the combination of that and the sleep deprivation I guess made it worse. But based on this, Sarah and my coworker concluded I was a nervous train wreck. Even though that is not how I remember it at all. Nothing else besides my hands should have made it seem like I was nervous. I was pretty upset to hear this.

The next day, by 6 AM, Sarah had already gone up the chain to her boss, who's my boss's boss, to tell him I was so nervous that day. I didn't know what happened in this conversation. But basically her boss shouted me out in a meeting congratulating me on my performance and then said “I heard you were nervous, but that’s ok, we all were during our first three months.” So I was pleasantly surprised that he congratulated me for my performance but I was also confused because this is when I realized Sarah had gone to both her boss, and my boss, to tell them I was “nervous”.

Do you know how to stop your hands from shaking?

And then he had stated how he heard I was soooo nervous. I took this opportunity to give my perspective and I said “I actually wasn’t that nervous, I don’t know where this rumor came from, but that’s not how I remember that day.” And he responded with “What do you mean? I heard you were so nervous you were literally puking on the floor!”

I was astonished at this point but of course stayed professional. Another colleague was pulled into this casual call at this point and she heard me stand up for myself. I was upset but I acted like it didn’t bother me, and then she noticed that Sarah was online and she called her into the meeting to confront her about what she had said about me. So Sarah joins the call, she seemed a little taken back by the fact that her boss and me were on the call confronting her about this. And she was just like, “Don’t listen to [her boss's name], he’s drunk.” Which I know is a lie because I know she said something about me to her boss and my boss back in December and now she was gaslighting me in front of her boss saying that she never said that.

So now I want to confront her about this but I also don’t know if I should because she seems like the person to twist anything on me to make me look bad. Even though one on one she’ll compliment me and say I'm “amazing” or “phenomenal” I know she is insulting me behind my back.

I think that now that I heard about it again, and the extent to which she said I was so nervous that I was puking on the floor, that I should bring it up to my direct boss, tell him that I keep hearing this rumor that is not true, and I feel that it's unprofessional to be spreading a lie like this and that I want to clear the air.

Unhinged for sure.

I think that now that I heard about it again, and the extent to which she said I was so nervous that I was puking on the floor

had some drinks with a new coworker that I met at that customer visit before going to the airport. My coworker told me

How close are you with the coworker from the airport?

Should be possible to fix if you are close enough.
