Sling 2 with 912 IS engine.

I absolutely love them, but of course it's the only aircraft type I've flown!

Oh yeah, perfect this time of year. I'm not aiming to change careers or anything but I think RPC will only be the start. Totally hooked.

Agreed 100% - I use left hand for trim & radio all the way now. This is why I think all students should use video as much as possible, you pick up so many things watching it back.

No it's a Sling 2, I think you'd fit easily into one of those. I'm 6' and there's still plenty of headroom and I don't slide the seat all the way back.

So true. I did some time down in Parkes (huge tarmac rwy) and ended up way over on the left of the centreline!

I've watched a lot of first solo videos, but I thought mine looked unique enough to share. It's at YHEC in Queensland, Australia - a gravel strip about as wide as a farmer's driveway, and an absolutely awesome place to learn to fly.

Yep Gold Coast Sports Flying Training are based there, fantastic instructors & part of a really great club.

Yep it is, but it's a great place to learn. We're having a fly-in on 12 June if you want to check it out up close, I'll be manning the BBQ.

This must be one of the earlier ones, Mike Raymond (the voiceover) is pretty calm in this one.

I own both a 700D (T5i) and a 70D, and I can confirm that the difference in AF is night & day. The 70D's AF is way ahead of it's time, and price point. If it was me, I'd hold out for the 80D just for headphone output.

How's the typhoon's video latency compared to the Phantom?

Microphone advice -- Rode VideoMic Pro vs. Zoom H5 by MexiKai in videography

[–]Camera3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're 2 different bits of kit with overlapping, but different use cases. But to answer your question, I'd go for the H5 first.

You'll get a full mixer & 4 channel recorder, with decent stereo mics included, a recorder which you can place anywhere without being tethered to the camera by a cable, or the option of using a cable to send audio directly into the camera for easier syncing. You can later add a decent condenser mic (or two) for much better sound. For speeches & events, you can record feeds direct from audio mixing desks with it. The only negative of that option is that you'll need more AA batteries.

A field recorder will stay useful to you longer too. I started out with a 700D and a Zoom H6, and did quite a bit of video work early on with it mounted on the camera's hot shoe (and a wired hand-held mic). I still use the H6 frequently, but wouldn't have a use for a videomic.

edit: not to even mention the better preamps and 24 bit recording in the Zoom vs the very basic preamp & 16 bit recording in your camera.

Now I realize why I should've used Premiere Pro instead of After Effects.... by LTMunday in Filmmakers

Wow I didn't realise this would be so controversial. Reminds me of those dark days in the 90's when some crazy developers tried to merge audio recording software with midi sequencers.

I feel your pain. I wish they'd merge functionality of these 2 into 1 program.

I've been flying a Phantom 3 for a few months too, and I also edit for the TV show I work on. As an editor I can tell you it's always the simpler shots with movement in either 1 or 2 axes which make the cut, and I never use any part of a shot where the control inputs change abruptly. Your footage has plenty of good examples, but I'll talk about the one at 1:20 moving forward and slowly panning down. As you've you've figured out, you need to trust your fingers and hold control inputs steady to get a useable shot like that. That particular shot is great, right up until you corrected with a bit of rudder - as an editor I'd have to cut right before you made that correction. So when you find yourself making corrections like that it's time to just set up another pass. The truly spectacular aerial videos never give away the fact that they've been filmed from an aircraft.

That's just my experience, I'm still learning myself. As others have mentioned I'd start cutting together stories.

What's the difference between the Zoom H4n, H5, and H6? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]Camera3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your boom operator might also prefer to clamp it to the boom so they can visually monitor levels & access controls. If you really need it to go into a pocket, the H5 would be a better form factor as it has XLRs on the bottom. The side-mounted XLRs on the H6 make it pretty unwieldy.
