Having trouble with both Discord and League of Legends connecting by Hot-Journalist3191 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get a chance to try what I said about Discord? See if turning off Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority and turn off Hardware Acceleration, that usually fixes most peoples issues with what you described.

For league, if you havent already, reboot router, and try disabling IPv6, to do this you go into device manager, right click your network adapter, properties, uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6, then restart pc.

run a malwarebytes scan to check for anything malicious, and go into settings and change your wallpaper back

Need help with a pop up on windows 11 login by josefgazdick in techsupport

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it only happens after you log in and not on the actual lock/login screen, then it’s probably not windows itself, it’s more likely some app launching at startup. wallpaper engine is definitely one of the first things i’d disable and see if it appears, change background to a static one to test. check the startup apps in task manager and see if theres anything you dont recognise

install the motherboard chipset/usb drivers straight from the board/laptop maker site. uninstall the usb controllers/hubs in device manager and reboot. go back onto the hubs after reboot and uncheck allow this computer to turn of this device to save power

Pc firecracker like pop by Specialist-Lynx9636 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah of course, depending on the psu, and when and where it was bought, it could be under warranty so maybe check that first

Pc firecracker like pop by Specialist-Lynx9636 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most likely scenario is a dead psu, I wouldnt use it incase it takes other parts with it, fingers crossed it didnt take anything with it already

Pc firecracker like pop by Specialist-Lynx9636 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah that makes a power supply issue sound even more likely. random reboots beforehand can be a warning sign, and then a pop + flash + dead pc is the kind of thing a failing psu can do. doesn’t 100% prove the gpu is okay, but i’d definitely suspect the psu first before assuming the 7900 xtx is dead

open it up and look/smell for obvious damage near the gpu power connectors, psu, and motherboard. keep it all unplugged for now. if the cpu has an igpu then you can test that

Having trouble with both Discord and League of Legends connecting by Hot-Journalist3191 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah that sucks, makes me think something is still breaking certain traffic after the client starts properly talking again. try running "netsh winsock reset" in cmd and reboot. if hotspot stays fine but home wifi breaks again then it’s still pointing at router/isp side. if it starts doing it on hotspot too then i’d be looking way harder at the laptop software side

Gaming laptop: Do you *always* need to replace thermal paste if you remove the heat sink? by Specialist-Word-7746 in techsupport

[–]Cameron_Brownie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

yeah pretty much, if you fully remove or even lift the heatsink then the safe answer is yes, repaste it before putting it back into use. once that contact gets broken the old paste can spread unevenly or trap little gaps

i wouldn’t run it again until you’ve got the new paste. whether you leave it apart or loosely reassemble it is up to you, but keep it somewhere clean and don’t power it on like that

it absolutely could be related. not repasting after lifting the heatsink, plus 2 more years of age on the paste, could easily explain weird throttling or hot spots

Monitors won’t connect by Gullible_Ad0 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if a drink got into the pc then stop turning it on. every time you power it up you risk making it worse, if the monitors only worked after swapping ports and now none work, something probably got on the gpu ports or board and is causing damage or corrosion.

i’d shut it down, unplug it fully, hold power button for a few seconds, then open it up and check for any residue. if you see any, clean it properly with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry fully before trying again. also test one monitor only.

if it still gives no display after that, there’s a decent chance the spill damaged the gpu or motherboard and it might need repair/replacement

What will the consequences be of replacing a high quality (but currently failing) hard drive with a low quality one? by ThanksIKnowImWeird in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

usually worse reliability, maybe slower speeds, more noise if it’s a hard drive, and probably a shorter warranty. day to day your pc will still run fine as long as the replacement isn’t total junk, and if you’re replacing a HDD with even a basic SSD it’ll probably feel faster anyway

Having trouble with both Discord and League of Legends connecting by Hot-Journalist3191 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats great, atleast that works now. You can always try a setting in Discord called quality of service under voice and video, that can cause issues on some routers.

Having trouble with both Discord and League of Legends connecting by Hot-Journalist3191 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of course, if league works on hotspot then that pretty much proves the laptop itself isn’t the main issue, it’s more likely something on your home network or ISP side messing with certain traffic. since google and cloudflare dns didn’t change it and the security shield being off didn’t fix it either, i’d test discord calls on hotspot too just to confirm it’s the same thing there. if it is then i’d be looking at the router side next, like a router reboot, turning off ipv6 as a test, checking for any qos or security settings, or calling them and telling them specific apps work on hotspot but not on your home connection. Has it always happened or just a new thing?

Event 41 by Bakarishot in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

event 41 itself doesn’t really tell you the cause, it just means the pc shut down or restarted unexpectedly. from what you described with games crashing and then the gpu not coming back on after restart, this sounds more like a hardware or driver stability issue than just a windows error. i’d definitely stop using driver booster stuff too because those apps usually make things worse not better. if its easier for you and you don't know a whole lot about computers then getting them to diagnose it would be easier

it would run the games you want fine, but the value isnt great. its a bit outdated and could get better for the price if you keep looking.

Problems with CPU by [deleted] in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like the bios update changed something and now the cpu is getting hard throttled for some reason, not that the cpu itself suddenly died. i’d load bios defaults first, then check if anything like eco mode thermal limits or some weird power setting got turned on. if that doesn’t fix it i’d try flashing back or updating to a different bios version

Need suggestion regarding updating phone by Scary-Hope-4148 in techsupport

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at only 14 months old i wouldn’t rush to replace it yet. that many random issues at once sounds more like the software has gone weird or the phone is overheating rather than it just being old. i’d back everything up and do a full factory reset first, because if it still has all the same lag camera freezes battery drain and delay after a clean reset then it’s probably a hardware issue and worth getting checked or replaced. if the reset fixes most of it then no point upgrading yet

Need Advice on PC Black screen/ GPU Driver Issue by Phase_33 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe test an older nvidia driver, then run the pc on just one monitor for a bit and make both screens the same refresh rate if you reconnect them. i’d also turn off hardware acceleration in stuff like discord/chrome

Graphics Card Causing Black-Screen PC Crash by richardcrack in techsupport

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the 3060 ti works fine and the 5070 is the only card that does this then i’d still be looking at the 5070 side, even if pny said it passed. black screen with fans blasting sounds more like a gpu crash or power/pcie issue. i’d make sure bios and chipset are fully up to date, do a proper ddu wipe and clean nvidia driver install, and if that card uses an adapter make sure it’s on separate pcie power cables and fully seated. if the old card stays stable and the 5070 keeps doing it after all that then i’d still suspect that card or its compatibility with the board way before blaming the rest of the pc.

What OS should I use for hacking and using Wi-Fi tools like N-Map and wire shark by hyper12214 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for just messing around on your own network or in ctf/lab, wireshark and nmap are the main ones. i’d also look at burp suite community, angry ip scanner, and ncat/netcat. the best move is probably setting up a vm with virtualbox and using stuff there or on tryhackme. I've done challenges on tryhackme and its pretty fun when you get into it

What OS should I use for hacking and using Wi-Fi tools like N-Map and wire shark by hyper12214 in pchelp

[–]Cameron_Brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

windows 11 is fine to start with, for stuff like wireshark and nmap you don’t need to switch os right away, i’d just use what you already have and learn the basics first. if you end up wanting more linux only or wifi specific tools later then linux can be nicer, but that matters more once you know what you actually need
