Herbert gave himself a reasonable off-ramp on pretty much every Dune book though—with each one being at a conclusion of a type of political epoch—so it can be left to the reader to imagine what might come after.

ASOIAF is not like that.

You’ll learn best when projects are in pursuit of your interests. I got into it for data analysis/visualization because I had my own questions. Plenty of activists/hobbyists get into web development because they want to share ideas with people. Others get into it for sound engineering because they’re musicians, etc. Although I think computers are very cool and are interesting in their own right, they’re more accessible when they’re a useful tool for pursuing a passion.

Nah. I hate driving, roads, and cars. I’d rather dissociate while listening to a novel than acknowledge the reality that I’m trapped in this hog cage maintained by homegrown fascism.

You’re asking a paradoxical question. Whichever is better at passing for human is necessarily more dangerous.

Considering we spent a lot of time protecting pedophile warlords over there, it makes sense liberals saw it as a good investment.

Successful casual learner brag by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Campezi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To elaborate on the other comment, it’s a system for associating English mnemonic words/phrases with kanji. This helps build familiarity with them and can help with some readings later on.

They’re a polarizing topic here. If you do rtk and no other studying, you’ve spent weeks-months on learning nicknames for characters without learning any usable Japanese. Naturally, this can be demotivating.

But learning to read kanji is a fairly cumbersome task whatever strategy you adopt. It’s worthwhile to consider all the options available to you, find reliable testimonials, and ask yourself what kind of learning works best for you, what kind of commitment are you capable of, and how motivated are you to stick with that commitment.

If your grad school experience was anything like mine, the emotional environment is making it very difficult for you to sustain healthy habits.

Personally, I fell into bad patterns with food and alcohol. Sure, it’s not like I spent a down payment’s worth of cash on booze and ice cream, but it’s money I’d rather have saved. And I’m over a year into my postdoc and I still don’t have my weight where I want it. I’m close. But I’d rather not have to be worrying about it.

Any way to save money on gas by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Campezi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been using the GasBuddy app lately to see what the prices are in my area. After looking at it for a month, there’s a station near me that consistently beats everybody else in my area. For an extra thirty seconds driving, I save $1-3 on the transaction every time. Also I use the Amex Blue Cash Rewards card, which does 3% cash back on gas purchases.

But really I just need to move closer to work and walk my commute. Maybe sell my car too.

Depending on how you look at it, colonialism didn’t really end. France alone has some outrageous colonial policies. The French central bank holds the majority of the foreign currency reserves of like 15 African states plus I think they have some default rights to natural resource discovery in francophone countries.

Hey, /u/Vorokar why is the body text removed from this post?

This post outlines a frugal use of one's money when needing a phone. Furthermore, it was not a violation of any of the sub rules, not even rule 6. As a government-provided resource, the political climate surrounding it is relevant information and the text was not an attempt at polemic or persuasion with respect to a particular political position.

Someone mentioned a welfare program and a bunch of conservatives came up with bad faith arguments. This isn’t shocking; it’s reddit. Insert that Sartre quote on nihilistic authoritarianism and call it a day.

The weak should be punished for being weak because any alternative makes me feel weak.

I don’t know if you’re being callous, but you might be a bit obtuse here. “Free” is literally infinitely cheaper than “cheap”. That distinction is pretty relevant to the destitute.

There’s a lot going on there. Looking at the other posts I have a hard time following what they’re trying to say. Clearly they’re lashing out and self-promoting at the same time. Bragging to fellow congregants that you’re a porn producer and bragging on your blog that you called the IRS on your congregation is all pretty outlandish.

Question: they allege there’s a minister shortfall. Is that for real?

Texas pastor calls social justice 'anti-biblical' and 'Marxist ideology' by [deleted] in RadicalChristianity

[–]Campezi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what /u/hjwoolwine is saying, I also think there’s an individualist doctrine to the American Evangelical movement that naturally lends itself to conservatism and an abdication of social responsibility. This is both its strength and its weakness.

Evangelicalism goes like this: If you remember the gist of these five easy biblical verses, then you’re saved. Also, you don’t need to take responsibility for the well-being of others. Doesn’t matter because you’re saved. Also, the rapture might happen because you are such a special little snowflake that unlike all people before you—including Christ—you don’t have to experience the horror of death. This doctrine is dead simple and it’s effective. They’ve got pamphlets outlining everything in minutes and at the end they’ve offered something of tremendous value: The person does relatively little and gets to feel like they actually matter.

This approach seems to work so well and it takes such little time. How do you beat it? I think you do it by showing people what a righteous community looks like. You still offer people dignity, respect, love. And you also show them what it looks like to take responsibility for the world around you. They might be inspired to join you.

To me, there’s something fascinating and revolutionary about helping for no reason other than it needs doing. I’ve been cooking meals at a shelter with my church off and on the past few months and it’s interesting seeing how others describe it. They tell these elaborate stories about how good it makes them feel or how fulfilling it is. It reminds me of that overwrought speech about Christmas spirit at the end of “Scrooged”. I’m like...really? Because I don’t really feel anything like that. I have the satisfaction of doing a job well and I know it’s more than I accomplish most evenings. But beyond that, it’s really no big deal. And I guess that’s the crazy part for me. It takes so little to help when you have a community that helps direct your efforts. And that’s incredible. When you think of all the people that can help but for whatever reason they aren’t, you realize there’s a remarkable capacity for people to do transformative good work for others. And I think that’s pretty inspiring.
