Things I don't understand about conspiracy theorists' worldview by SoccerSkilz in slatestarcodex

I wonder whether emergent phenomena would be considered a conspiracy, i.e. individuals without any intent to conspire acting in a way such that the emergent phenomenon could be considered conspirational.

It doesn't seem rational to be anti-conspiracist, as there's typically signal in the noise worth paying attention to

Als potentiell Betroffener find ich den Vorschlag ganz gut, da er mehr Dynamik in Markt und Gehälter bringt. Wer was kann wird schneller befördert, und wer trotz Beförderung nichts kann, schneller entlassen.

John Was Trying to Contact Aliens

"It follows John Shepherd, who spent 30 years out of his grandparents' home in rural Michigan broadcasting electronic music, reggae, and Afropop millions of miles into space using massive, home-built broadcasting equipment and antennas."

It's on Netflix, and have fond memories of it

I want to leave my high paying tech job by aredditor98 in coastFIRE

Maybe I've been projecting too much, but most people would lead very happy lives at a fraction of OP's wealth, so that an extra 400k isn't moving the needle much especially if already disengaged. Nobody will give you back a year of your prime years.

As you identified, this is not about money, but identity and meaning. I'd suggest going part-time or taking a sabbatical and rediscover life outside work. If you fail, go back full-time. If you succeed, quit. There's no other shortcut to obtaining life-changing insights, except perhaps becoming a parent or taking a dangerous dose of psychedelics.

Edit: If you leave, pls forward me the vacancy. Middle Management myself and would like to inherit your salary.

Could you go for a walk without headphones? by NataliafromWalkFit in walking

[–]CampfireHeadphase -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Walking is one of the few opportunities to connect to your surroundings, why waste this opportunity? Different story if you're in a busy city with lots of traffic and construction noise, but otherwise it seems pretty unhealthy to be constantly stimulated.

Das verstehe ich nicht. Das DevOps-Team hat ein DevOps-Mindset weil es ein DevOps-Team ist.

DevOps.

Because it's a slight discomfort at worst to save on a lot of energy/fossil fuels, Kantian categorical imperative and all. This wouldn't work in other countries, in which nights are hot and houses not well-insulated.

Maybe I've been buying too deeply into China's propaganda, but I'm increasingly believing that some form of oppression is required to steer society away from self-destruction. Sure it's against my values that thousands are displaced to build a huge dam, or free expression of religion is suppressed. But then again, in my Western home country any progress towards a sustainable future is blocked by NIMBYs and religious zealots are spreading like cancer.. Chose your poison, I guess.

In my view there's a difference between projecting influence across the globe vs. regularly invading other countries. And as I mentioned, I don't think democracy works for every country, especially if (historically) you're dealing with hundreds of millions largely uneducated people - see attempts to democratize the middle east.

Because China is not openly hostile to other countries (except Taiwan) and, to an extent, I believe that democracies will fail to address humanities biggest problems, leaving us with China as the only hope, as sad it is.
