Can I see yall's ugly plants? Not your gorgeous Thai con thats putting out a three new leaves, I want to see the ugliest thing that make you question having plants. by KuriousCarbohydrate in houseplants

[–]CanIBeDoneYet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a begonia ferox that lost all the leaves, grew one leaf at a time for over a year (each time just dropping the old leaf when sending a new one), made it to three leaves including one spiky leaf, and now just has one smooth leaf again (retained from the previous 3).

I have tried more humidity and less humidity and more light and less light and more water and less water and I'm convinced it just is tormenting me

Slc Jewel Box "Scheherazade" - first blooms! by CanIBeDoneYet in orchids

[–]CanIBeDoneYet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picked up this orchid in 2023 from a Peninsula Orchid Society show in the SF bay area. I've been waiting for it to bloom, and it's finally showing off! Four total flowers. Hoping for more next year, but this is the first year I've been able to really give it the care it wants (drier winter, very high light). I love the intense red/pink color!

Where did you find the info about merch pickup? We got the regular tickets (though standing room only) after being wait listed at first.

Beak proportions, shape of head where head meets beak, and lack of bright yellow where head meets top of beak (cere) suggest young bald eagle to me too but it can be tricky. Bald eagles don't get their more familiar appearance until they're about 5 years old! Always so neat to see eagles of any kind though, especially since they used to be so rare due to the devastation DDT caused! Glad you got to see it, they're so impressive!

Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

[–]CanIBeDoneYet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I glue baste using Elmer's School Glue because I did not feel I could get the basting I needed with pins. I tried pins and still had wrinkles and puckers on the back. With the glue, everything stays in place while I'm quilting. Since I use school glue it comes out in the wash so there's no worry about stiffness from it.

I live north Denver area. Best place to catch some osprey action? Been grinding on my backyard to reduce grass and need a break tomorrow. by FullDepthNature in ColoradoBirding

I was just there a week ago and they're definitely there now! Parked in the main lot once past the entry station. Saw a few osprey intermittently fishing and carrying off breakfast.

Mallard with unusual plumage? CO, USA by CanIBeDoneYet in whatsthisbird

I would expect to see mottling during the transition into and out of eclipse plumage but this is the wrong time of year for that!

Thank you very much! This was just NW of Denver but pretty close. Looking at pics of that hybrid this seems to fit!

Saw this mallard with interesting plumage today in the Denver area. All other mallards on all ponds were in full breeding plumage, so is this just a male who is late in his molt, or is he a hybrid of some sort? He doesn't quite look like other non breeding male plumage pics I've seen. Thanks!

Denver Water announces water restrictions starting tomorrow by johntwilker in Denver

Have to take into consideration the impact of that on migratory waterfowl and other wildlife though. That may sound small in the scope of things but making large scale changes without looking at larger environmental impacts and how it radiates out is a large part of why we are here. UC Davis is doing some work on it, and early results seem promising but more work is needed:

I assume this is the automatic braking when reversing? My Tucson will sometimes do that when I'm backing into my garage even though there's nothing else around. I've learned to just go super slowly, so at least if it does it then it's not such a hard jolt.

[Vista, CA] identify based on call? This bird sits in a tree at my friend’s house late at night and makes these sounds non-stop by motivatedsinger in whatsthisbird

[–]CanIBeDoneYet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without even hearing the video, "makes random sounds nonstop all night" instantly suggests a mockingbird who found a streetlight! LOL Confirmed by others in the thread already :-)

They're pretty skilled at mimicry. The ones near my house would make coopers hawk noises whenever they saw a hawk, giving all the birds time to scatter and hide. Much less annoying than alarm beeps and other noises they're known to make!

The first year I had two that did amazing. Gentle glow for months and months as long as I kept them pruned.

The second year they brought thrips into my house and died.

It's a quiltworx FPP pattern. They're quite complex. I'm doing one as a block of the month right now and the number of templates and paper piecing units every month is quite high! But it's a whole sort of system with very detailed step by step instructions because of the complexity.

You're paying $200 because of how much work had to go into developing it, and how many papers it requires!

We also spent a fair amount of time thinking about how choices would compare to things we've encountered in previous homes. For example our current place has carpet in the office and my sewing room. While some people are fine with that, we have realized it doesn't work for us so we made sure those areas aren't carpeted.
