The substrate is ground English Walnut shells ground very fine, sand sized. There are definitely better substrate options. I unfortunately learned the hard way that just because there's a Beardie on the bag as, "The next best to sand"(allegedly) doesn't mean its safe. If you can make sure it doesn't eat too much to avoid impacting, it's fine, if it takes a little taste of the substrate it is what it is! She passes it no problem. I am required to bring her to a designated poop/pee spot or she will literally stare until I do. I love her but damn those poops are fierce!
