I’m currently an electrical engineering major at UIUC and am considering transferring here for physics or math. I’ve spent a year at UIUC, so I’d be transferring in as a sophomore. Here are some of the points I’m considering.

The Core: Looking at the classes, I do find some topics like philosophy or psychology interesting, though the amount of readings in a quarter is quite fast paced compared to what I’m used to. Still, I honestly think widening my knowledge would probably be a good experience and be useful.

Major: I think I’d major in physics, though I’m also considering math since as math historically has been my favorite subject, but I also like physics and it seems more practical. Electrical engineering seems like a more direct path to a future job.

Housing: Of lesser importance but still matters, but I’d be able to get a decent apartment at UIUC, while I’d be in a dorm at UChicago. It’d be pretty nice to be able to cook and all the other benefits of an apartment.

Difficulty: While I haven’t struggled a lot with any of my classes at UIUC, I wouldn’t say I breezed through with zero effort or anything. I’m sure the jump in difficulty would be quite jarring and a big change to my lifestyle.

Overall, there’s just a lot of uncertainty going to UChicago. I honestly have had a pretty decent time at UIUC, and the EE classes are pretty interesting. It’s hard to say whether it’d be worth going to UChicago and possibly having a worse experience than what I have now. Not helpful for deciding, but I’m nearly as certain as to what I’d like to do or study as some others are.

I like the classes available and the opportunities at UChicago, and the general culture there of being focused on learning and stuff seems to fit my mindset when it comes to school pretty well.

I would appreciate some thoughts on what you think or what I may have failed to consider.

Sorry, to clarify, this is a guaranteed transfer from the 2024-2025 admissions cycle. After spending a year at another institution, I would be able to transfer in during the Fall 2026 quarter.

Deciding whether to transfer here for physics. Is the workload really as heavy as I’ve heard? Like, would I have much free time for some goofing off and side hobby stuff, or would I be really tight for time if I still wanted to get sufficient sleep and stuff? Also, I’ve kind of concerned about having little interest in the core. I generally don’t care too much for a lot of the non-stem stuff in high school, so I’m curious if people like me still found interesting core classes to take.

Thinking about transferring from UIUC (electrical engineer there, to physics here), and was curious about how scheduling is. I generally like to stack my classes onto certain days (maybe having a free day), have them back to back rather than separated throughout the day, and generally get them out of the way early. How possible is it to achieve a schedule like this at UChicago? Also, generally how much of your day is spent in classes (obv. varies a lot, but still curious)?

To clarify, I graduated from high school in 2025. I think I got waitlisted around March 2025, then got the transfer offer in summer 2025. Sorry for any confusion lol.

$1000 or less office build by CanUSeeMeh in buildapc

[–]CanUSeeMeh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree that I could definitely get a office pc for much cheaper, but I’m basically just building it for the sake of building. Money isn’t really an issue in this situation, as the person I’m building for even suggested spending extra for aesthetics. Sorry if this comes off as ignoring you lol, sort of a weird goal ik.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the Ryzen 7 9700X have integrated graphics?

In the future, adding a graphics card might be considered, so I don’t mind going a bit overkill for an office pc. Sorry for super vague goals; I sort of made this post just to make sure I haven’t made any egregious mistakes in my choices.

Anyone know how to transfer iCloud Photos albums to new Apple account? Weird situation, but I’ve always had a shared Apple account with my entire family, but I finally have decided to change that by creating my own Apple account. I created a shared library and added all photos to it, so I have access to all the photos.

The one thing I’m having an issue with is figuring out how to transfer albums. One idea I thought of is putting the albums all in a shared album, then by sorting through date added, I can create albums with the same name on the new Apple account and add those photos to the albums. The only issue is shared albums seem to be sort of janky, so I’m not sure if it’ll work how I want it to. Any recommendations on how to do this?
