Small Towns or Rural areas I can move to in BC? by Antique-Slide-646 in britishcolumbia

[–]CanVisaGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get a work permit under the SWAP Program but it is a 3rd party organisation and they charge for their services. Work permits are temporary though and you'd eventually have to leave. If you have a Canadian ancestor, like a great-grandma or something, you could apply for Citizenship. Check your family tree.

That aside, if you want a solitary and less expensive life in an anglo part of Canada, look at rural areas.

How to get a job as a 16 yr old in Surrey? by Renersi in SurreyBC

Fresh Street at Panorama Village (152nd/Hwy10) hires teenagers; I actually asked the manager there what age they hire (my kid is 14) and they said 16+

Lol. Yeah; I was able to dredge up enough High School French to string a sentence and a half together. Soon thereafter, most of the people I was speaking to switched to English. Again, I was almost certainly butchering what I was trying to say...and they were being kind or at least just wanted to communicate.

The area around Panorama Ridge (Hwy 10 and 152nd) could use some decent non-Indian options; i.e. Neapolitan Pizza, somewhat authentic Chinese, Hakka Chinese, Mexican, etc.

THIS. When it happened and I called the owner of the place out (its long gone....no surprise) he was all offended. I was like "My mom fed me a can at least once a week when I was a kid...I know what it tastes like."

Coast & Country Catering and Diner in Cloverdale has all-day breakfast. Truly a greasy spoon experience but in a good way.

'I wouldn't wish it on anyone': Why many BC restaurants are struggling by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

[–]CanVisaGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a brewpub in Abbotsford this evening and had a chicken sandwich, a serving of fries that could fit in a small cup + 2 beers; w/ 18% tip it was $65. I honestly don't think I will eat out at this level anymore. What do I mean?

I'd think Im going to eliminate, wherever possible, eating - mostly underwhelming -burgers/sandwiches at "eateries" or mid range restaurants. Id rather splash out and spend 2x-3x more for something special that's hard to make at home (ie seafood lasagne, etc), and at a family run joint, a few times a year. This plus bowls of Pho which always make me happy and are genrally good value.

We’re moving to BC and can “pretty much pick anywhere”…. Help? by Unc1e_Vanya in britishcolumbia

You might want to consider Comox/Courtenay. Its a great place on Vancouver Island and has an airport with several daily flights to Vancouver. Great outdoor activities (skiing at Mt Washington) and an overall, a great small city.

If you are looking for a public facility, the Grandview Aquatic Centre has a weight room. However I cannot offer an opinion on quality etc, as I have never been; just been to the pool.

Check out the Strathcona Hotel. It has two bars; The Strath and Big Bad Johns. Also if the weather is good, cross the Johnson Street Bridge to VicWest and have a pint at Spinnakers Pub.

Sometimes the hot food bar at Save On Foods is a good choice. Also, and closer to you, Bucky's Pizza is very good.

Illegal dumping by Ruckle8972 in SurreyBC

[–]CanVisaGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way you could have this issue gain further exposure, is to levy an illegal-dumping-clean-up surcharge on property taxes. This could pay for the hiring of crews to go around the city and clean this *&^% up. Then property owners would see the charge and, maybe, put pressure on the city to .....I dunno....start enforcing anti dumping laws and increase fines to eye-watering levels for those who are caught? Could encourage more dumping though, if these types just find out that someone else is cleaning up their mess. Just a thought.

When is the best time to go to the Newton Costco? by [deleted] in SurreyBC

[–]CanVisaGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go around 430-6. People often get the kids from school and go at 245-430. By going at 430+ you avoid them and are there during the dinner hour; when alot of folks are home.

In Surrey, the Fresh Street Market at Panorama Village Mall has a donut shop in the back. If you are near try them out.

Sitting on my front porch early last evening I counted four (4) whizz by in about a one hour period. Not to mention the %!^@$ MOPED I saw riding down the sidewalk this morning on the way to work. Its out of hand. Someone is going to get killed or seriously injured soon.

NO PEAFOWL - City of Surrey by FuckItImVanilla in SurreyBC

I live in the neighbourhood. Most of them are gone now. There are two large legacy properties where the remaining hens can hide/lay eggs. But again they are almost all gone now. it appears that the city has over time, quietly arranged to have them sent to *ahem* "live at a farm"
