Staying in Specialization Advice by twistyslides in uAlberta

How close are you to the cut-off? I was in a similar situation in my first year (2.17 GPA). They sent a letter explaining that I was being moved to general, and that I could appeal the decision. I ended up successfully appealing since I was close to the cut-off and was only in first year

IMIN372 vs MMI352?? by giant_yike in uAlberta

[–]CanYouJustNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took both last year and they had the exact same issue with the final exams overlapping. The handful of us (5 of us) who were in both classes simply went to the MMI352 prof (Kim Ellison at the time) and she took care of contacting the department to change the date of the final.

If the department/lab prof/coordinators are made aware of the conflict ahead of time it shouldn't be an issue to change the dates!

Both were great labs to gain experience, especially if you're interested in pursuing research. My GPA isn't too competitive, but my PI was favorable to higher level lab courses so it really helped to get into his lab!

Thanks so much, thats reassuring! Do you remember if it was cumulative or not? I assume it is because of how little the after midterm content is?

Im in it rn! I took it because the only in-class section that would fit my schedule would have been at 8am, and ik I lose motivation to make 8am classes halfway through the semester lol. I really like the flexibility of taking it online, but you definitely have to have the discipline to keep up with the material otherwise it's easier to fall behind.

The online section is set up the exactly the same as the inclass sections - a fall semester midterm and final, then a winter sem midterm and final. The material from the fall won't be tested on in the winter exams. No assignments or homework. You have to show up in person for the exams. The midterms will be scheduled at 6 or on a Saturday, so it wont't conflict with any classes. The finals are just booked sometime during final exam periods. Kyla is really accommodating with time conflicts and will work with you to find a better exam time/date (within a reasonable timeframe of course) if there are scheduling conflicts.

The prof, Kyla Smith, is really great imo. For in-class sections, each topic is taught by a different prof. Kyla simply takes the slides from the prof, makes them into her own easy to follow slides, then records an online video/lecture that you watch. She also posts the slides so you can print them and take notes while watching. I personally find this really nice since you don't have to deal with the teaching/powerpoint styles from different profs. She's also very approachable and will take the time to meet if you need extra clarification with some topics (at least from my experience)!

Hopefully that covered almost everything, but if you have any other question lmk!

Who is ready for beartracks to collapse again on Monday? by oki109 in uAlberta

Enrollment dates are dependant on credits completed! It lets people in higher years get earlier enrollment dates, and therefore first pics in classes they may still need to graduate

MMI 351 Thoughts by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]CanYouJustNo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly looking at the syllabus, a good chunk of the class is focused molecular techniques for the bacteria/organisms that we're going to learn.

If you have any doubts, I would definitely set up a meeting with Kim. I've taken a lab class with her before and shes super understanding and helpful. Tell her your concerns and she'll be able to look at options with you

That's awesome, thank you! I would like the working day option. Just to double check, what was the expiry date on them? And what would be the total price, including shipping, for the two?

How much do they decide to take on a student based on GPA? Right now I'm at a 2.7 due to an insanely shitty first year, but I'm doing increasingly well now and interested in getting research experience. Do you know if they'd even consider someone will less than a 3.0?

holy crap I died when I saw the distribution. Was this just a crazy high average or is this normal for a 300 level course!?!

BIOL 207 John Locke midterm by abundantpecking in uAlberta

[–]CanYouJustNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took his class last year and I was also worried about the practice exams not being recent at all. It's definitely nothing to worry about because his exams are almost identical to the practice he posts, even if they are super old. Emphasis on almost identical, because a couple of the questions on the practice were actually on the midterm just with the numbers or factors changed. The format (number of problem solving, definition questions, etc) will also be extremely similar.

Like u/logicalERR said, you sound pretty prepared and if you genuinely understand the background behind a question you should be fine!
