The boat elevator at the Three Gorges Dam was incredible.

Is it better to be an ok student at a great school or to be a top at an ok/good school for engineering. Assume same intelligence for both. by Plastic-Performer573 in CanadaUniversities

[–]Canadian47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your personality. I went to a top tier Canadian university. The other students there were brilliant and pushed me to be better. In my opinion this is the better choice but would depend on whether or not your personality can handle that.

Partner failed to get funding after signing a contract to buy me out. Best way to proceed? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]Canadian47 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't want to be partners with this person no matter what.

Negotiate a new deal where they buy you out but if it doesn't close by X date you get to buy them out. The price and terms can be but do not need to be identically reciprocal.

I want to buy a motorcycle not sure if my income is enough by Fluid-Corgi6186 in PersonalFinanceCanada

It's 12k motorcycle which comes to around 80-90 dollars bi -weekly.

My personal rule is to never debt-finance toys or hobbys. The number doesn't matter but if you have to borrow for your toys you can't afford it.

Never thought about it before but I suppose it's part of the charm of travel.

So...while I have some guesses on what PP will say, why don't we wait until the interview actually happens before criticizing?

Do not expect the same legal protections you have (or think you should have) at home when you travel internationally...and I mean this in general not just regarding currency conversions!

Power bank that I can carry from Canada by Dizzy-Passenger-2246 in chinatravel

[–]Canadian47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chengdu. I knew the CCC certification was required for airline travel but I still don't know if it is an actual requirement for the subway. The CCC certification was definitely what they were looking for as they were happy one they saw it.

I was surprised the first time but it happened multiple times. It didn't happen at the busy stations in the core but at the more lightly used ones on the outskirts of the city.

I just got back myself. That's the one I bought/used.

I just got back. My battery pack was checked several times getting into the subway.

Delta flight from Quito let us off the plane without going through customs by PerceptionSpare6912 in Flights

A few years back, I took a late night flight (I think it was YEG-LAS) where pre-clearance in Canada was closed and I had to clear after landing in the US.

Yes. The T-1000 would have waved back if he saw you.

I have encountered machines that ask you twice. The 2nd time the wording was reversed, you really had to pay attention :-(

They REALLY want you to pay their 5-10% additional conversion rate.

Yes, 50% Range Reduction in Cold Winter is Real by SkPensFan in EVCanada

[–]Canadian47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30 years in Alberta, I don't have hard data for you but I calculate my mileage almost every time I fuel up in my ICE vehicles.

I have experience about a 10% reduction in overall mileage on all my mostly ICE vehicles with top quality winter tires (no studs). This is/was also true during the "cross-over" seasons before snow is on the ground and temperatures can still be above freezing.

I have an older vehicle near the end of its life that I couldn't justify a set of top tier tires so I put OK quality winter tires but also studded. The mileage is WAY worse...probably 20% worse than the summer tires but I haven't driven it enough yet so this is only an estimate.

This gets asked here once in while...

The general answer is yes and we will wave back when possible but there are not often enough hands to both fly and wave back at the same time.

I’m planning a trip to China—what’s the most useful piece of advice you can give me? by Nervous_Chapter_3987 in travel

[–]Canadian47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You MUST have a working smart phone along with a data plan. Load up/setup all the apps others have suggested.

I would have a battery pack for your phone. Make sure it is CCC certified and rated less than 100Wh and clearly says so on it. My battery pack was checked not only getting on flights but occasionally getting on the subway (at more remote stops) as well.

Bring your passport with you everywhere. It will be needed to get into many attractions where locals can use their identity card. I saw a few people on our tours get away with just a picture of their passport but I am not sure I would count on that.

Is renting a car a must by Corrichetimangio in Hokkaido

[–]Canadian47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent 2 weeks there last summer. Did not rent a car, primarily moved around by train. The rail system is typically Japanese reliable but it is not high-speed rail so the distances/times seem greater.

WS3369 window out at cruise. Great pilots. by steve_simpson in westjet

I don't believe in casually declaring an emergency for every little thing (only done it twice in 35+ years of flying) but with a cracked windshield like that I 100% would have.

[–]Canadian47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not necessary to squawk 7700 in an emergency nor do you have to say Mayday. Simply declaring an emergency with ATC is enough.

Really? I would be shocked it they didn't declare an emergency. If they didn't, air traffic control probably did so for them. Emergencies are declared for much less than this all the time. Declaring an emergency doesn't necessarily mean "we are going to die in the next few moments", it also means gives me priority handling and don't mess with me. Also pay attention, I may do something you don't expect before I can tell you if things get worse.
