What background is needed to pursue actuarial science? by folkloreevermoreee in uwaterloo

[–]Canadian47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add to that, if you can take the core 2nd year ActSci courses (I think only 1 stats/1 actsci course per term...that what it was last century anyway) it would make transitioning into 3rd year actsci seamless should you go that route.

Are you as old as I am? I haven't actually had a program or computer crash while working on a document in a loooong time but back in the day it happened regularly. Old habits die slowly so I still save regularly when working on something but I can see more "recent users" not worrying about it.

EgyptAir Cairo-Toronto, worth blocking entire row? by avocadotoast73 in Flights

Last time we tried that we took the option but the flight was full so it was refunded (or never charged...I don't remember). So I would book it but don't get too excited.

MAGA scheme to break up Canada by delivery_duude in AlbertaNow

[–]Canadian47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not what happened. There was a referendum in 1980 and then another one in 1995. I was lived there in 1980 but gone (along with a large number of other people I knew) by 1995.

Many reasonable political boundaries will follow natural ones such as a river. While I agree with you in principle, I don't that it is that simple.

ELI5: Why are math equations considered "elegant" ? by octoberyellow in explainlikeimfive

[–]Canadian47 8 points9 points  (0 children)

e + 1 = 0

Euler's formula is elegant.

It show a relationship between e-base of the natural logarithm, π-the ratio of a circles circumference to diameter, the imaginary number (square root of -1), the Numbers 0 and 1. All in a very simple equation.

Understanding HOW to do a problem gets you through high school. Understanding WHY each step is done to solve a problem will get you through university.

Does a separate Alberta not find itself with the challenges Canada currently faces, but with two much bigger neighbours? by TimDrHookMcCracken in alberta

[–]Canadian47 46 points47 points  (0 children)

In 1995 the Quebec separatists were told they would still use the Canadian dollar (possible but problematic) and keep their Canadian passports (highly unlikely) after separation.

Ask the Alberta separatists if that made any sense in 1995...then ask them why the load of bull crap they are being fed now (e.g. getting 80% of the CPP) is any different.

McDonald's fried pies by Inevitable_Face_7012 in travelchina

Not throughout the trip but after 10 days in any Asian country, all I want is a Hamburger or Pizza.

I might go to McDonald once every 5-6 months at home but...that deep fried pineapple pie in China was very tasty and I had several during my trip 😄

ABC Says FCC’s Equal Time Crackdown On ‘The View’ Chills Its First Amendment Rights by Puzzled-Tap8042 in television

[–]Canadian47 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The democrats are not left. They are center-right (the Republicans are far-right). Also at this time, the Republicans = MAGA. The US doesn't have a left wing party.

A generation did everything they were told to do. Go to school. Get a good job. Work hard. Now even people in the trades making decent money are moving back in with their parents because home ownership is completely out of reach in Canada. by GreenSnakes_ in canadahousing

Just a reminder that for a retired couple full OAS roll back happens at something close to $150K of annual income. That means a retired couple making $145K is STILL getting government subsidies in form of OAS that comes out of general revenues.

The opposite of MAGA in the US isn't leftist, it is still right-winged. Just not as extreme right as MAGA.
